<GazzaK> Sionide, why?
<GazzaK> I like my LUG, we do stuff
<Sionide> correction:
<Sionide> i sometimes hate, some members of my lug
<GazzaK> ahhh, got some annoyances then?
<GazzaK> the youngest member of my LUG got ubuntu membership today, I'm well chuffed
<Sionide> one or two, yeah
<Sionide> hrm, i'm working on that...
<GazzaK> I think I ought to be too
<GazzaK> but all I do is the LUG and help out in the non support channels here
<GazzaK> I doubt that is enough
<Sionide> i'm about to write some wiki!
<GazzaK> the LUG is non ubuntu specific and the helping out is not like support is it.

<X3N> the person who complained against Stephan Hermann
<stdin> the post wasn't intended to be about anyone in particular, I've hared a few people moan about it
<stdin> and it's not meant as an attack either, just my view on it
<X3N> it does read like that though
<stdin> hmm, I guess I can see your point there
<X3N> you could take it out of the ubuntu category ?
<X3N> or make an ubuntu-uk category maybe
<stdin> well, I took it out of the ubuntu category anyway, as it's not so much about ubuntu, but I'll also make a ubuntu-uk category
<X3N> ok done
<stdin> I'll use the ubuntu-uk tag for things I'm sure don't conflict with the CoC then

<popey> dell printers are lexmark rebadges aren't they?
<selinuxium> popey: ^^^
<sampbar> i think so
<popey> right, so what do you want to do selinuxium ?
<popey> linux can see the disk just fine
<popey> but it is partitioned and formatted in a non-linuxy way
<popey> so if you run "sudo fdisk /dev/sda" you can then delete those paritions and make nice new ones
<selinuxium> popey: I was going to move my /home to the sda and then leave the 120gb IDE for music and /var/www but I don't thinkn I can do it without major hassles. Perhaps If I just creat a mount point for /usr/share/Music for the sda then I can copy my music from hdb1 to it and free up some space!
<popey> its not major hassle at all
<popey> you just need to partition it, copy all your data over, edit fstab, remount, job done
<selinuxium> popey: the 120gb is full, mainly with FLAC files. is it a case of just copying all the other stuff over then..
<popey> initially yes

<sampbar> GazzaK: its fine until something goes wrong
<SpudULike> Anyone about to help me with a problem of 'System load' which is floating about near the 100% mark making a machine very unresponsive! I think it's all down to hard disk activity. What can I run to see what is putting a load on my system?
<sampbar> SpudULike: have you tried the obvious? Rebooting
<SpudULike> This is a recurrent problem which I usually sort out with a re-boot, but I would like to get to the bottom of what's causing it.
<mgdm> SpudULike: Have you tried 'top' or similar programs in a terminal?
<SpudULike> mgdm, I have. It's not a CPU issue, that's barely being used. I need something like top but for other system resources.
<mgdm> You can re-order the output in top based on anything that it measures
<SpudULike> I have a panel app that looks at 'load' and that's gone all red, but I need some detail.
<mgdm> is your hard drive doing very much when this happens?
<sampbar> have you checked the temp of the hd?
<sampbar> SpudULike: try popey's guide: http://popey.com/Am_I_Hot_Or_Not
<SpudULike> mgdm, yes, the hard drive light is constantly on. sampbar, I expect it to be hot, though I have no way of measuring.
<sampbar> SpudULike: that will tell you the temperature etc.
<X3N> i would have thought if thre is something causing your load to go up so much it would be resonably obvious in "top"
<X3N> hard drive temperature is unlikely to affect the load averages really
<SpudULike> top - 17:43:37 up 2 days, 4:32, 2 users, load average: 0.02, 0.06, 0.05
<SpudULike> Tasks: 117 total, 2 running, 115 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
<SpudULike> Cpu(s): 0.7%us, 0.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 98.8%id, 0.0%wa, 0.2%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
<SpudULike> Mem: 1035540k total, 992652k used, 42888k free, 228484k buffers
<SpudULike> Swap: 3068404k total, 0k used, 3068404k free, 562472k cached
<X3N> that's all normal then
<SpudULike> But where does thjs 'load' panel applet get it's info prom/
<X3N> the average system load
<X3N> ie load average: 0.02, 0.06, 0.05
<SpudULike> X3N, but how do I find out what that is, like I can with top for cpu usage?
<X3N> 17:41 < SpudULike> top - 17:43:37 up 2 days, 4:32, 2 users, load average: 0.02, 0.06, 0.05
<SpudULike> Ah.
<mgdm> the "uptime" command gives you that too
<SpudULike> Even bigger AH! My ssh session had failed to the 'loaded' machine, those figures are for an OK system <Shame>
<SpudULike> It takes ages to get the session re-established, because of the load!
<X3N> easily done
<SpudULike> It wouldn't be so easily done if I'd chosen some sensible machine names!
<SpudULike> I still can't get in remotely, though I can see load average 38.57 38.64 35.20 on the wired terminal. I take it that's not normal!
<SpudULike> I think the problem here lies with Evolution, I've just killed it an the system has been brought back under control. Anyone know of any disk thrashing issues with Evolution?
<sampbar> Evolution E = Evil
<sampbar> try thunderbird
<mgdm> Evolution is nasty 'orrible stuff :)
<spd106> Woo hoo I've broken into the top 20 on DTD
<sampbar> ahhhhh... another addict!
<spd106> No really, I've only played 4 times

<sampbar> ah ok i was getting confused then
<cinex> wow. stwater still wont work for my ip. works with 'the-cloak' though
<cinex> is it me or the website?
<cinex> I cant ping it or anything
<LoudMouthMan> just filled out a questionare about my astmha : one of the questions was "if youve been investigaed in hospital for your illness what were the results " : now I am thinking the answer is probably Asthma
<cinex> perhaps it wants your peak flow ?
<cinex> or the amount of steriods you require during an attack
<LoudMouthMan> blow that
<LoudMouthMan> all of them !
<LoudMouthMan> mwoohahahah I love osteoperosis !
<cinex> why cant I access stware.co.uk
<cinex> emails...
<cinex> see what the bounce says
<sampbar> LMM: you love osetoperosis?
<LoudMouthMan> sampbar, yes its a uhm side effect of having to many of the drugs I require to treat being an Asthmatic.
<sampbar> :( not good
<LoudMouthMan> Yeah id say it sucks, but really its a bit of a wheeze.
<cinex> selinuxium: are you around ?
<mgdm> LoudMouthMan: never heard of that before, and I have asthma too
<sampbar> depends which drugs he uses and severity of his asthma
<mgdm> true
<cinex> who here has blueyonder as their ISP ?
<sampbar> u mean virgin digital
<sampbar> *virgin media
<cinex> no. blueyonder (in the addy)
<cinex> ie, for me its, telf.blueyonder.co.uk
<sampbar> im ntl
<selinuxium> cinex: yep
<LoudMouthMan> mgdm, you havent? eep you should look up what Corticosteroid does for long term users.
<cinex> could you do me a huge favour selinuxium: check www.stwater.co.uk (and/or ping it)
<cinex> my email to a made up stwater.co.uk address has failed to boucne too
<cinex> so I imgaine it was 'dropped' when it got there
<cinex> oh no. it came back
<selinuxium> cinex: send an email to echo@uk.psi.com it will send an auto reply
<cinex> whats it do? (I know the OED websitre return my emails lableed as spam)
<cinex> did you try it selinuxium ?
<selinuxium> cinex: sorry, mis read your first post. it is possible that the range that you are on has been blacklisted. it happened to me only yesterday while trying to email barings...
<selinuxium> cinex: stwater.co.uk doesn't exist does it?
<cinex> great innit. I am gonna get fined cos they blocked my ip (late bill)
<cinex> yes selinuxium its severn trent water
<selinuxium> cinex: what are you trying to achieve?
<selinuxium> cinex: there website appears to b edown.
<cinex> http://www.the-cloak.com/Cloaked/+cfg=32/http%3A//www.stwater.co.uk/server.php?show=nav.6134
<cinex> they have barred the whole ISP ?
<LoudMouthMan> and now for something completely different: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sciuridae_jocularis/37505360/
<cinex> its not fair.
<selinuxium> cinex: possibly, but can anyone else see it?
<cinex> yes. I can when I cloak it and someone in there the other day/week got it to load
<LoudMouthMan> I can see it .
<cinex> in here*
<selinuxium> cinex: if someone else can get to it, install TOR and do it that way
<cinex> use my credit card through it? No thanks!
<mgdm> LoudMouthMan: Hmmm, uhoh
<selinuxium> cinex: ah.... There seems to be some reason for blocking a load of blueyonder/telewest/virgin ranges at the mo...
<cinex> how can blueyonder let themselves be out on a bloody spam list?
<cinex> it will be one of those lists loads of places pay to use I bet
<cinex> if it didn't cost so much money to call them I would phone up and shout at them
<LoudMouthMan> mgdm, uh oh ?
<selinuxium> cinex: i got this in a returned email... 553-mail rejected because your IP is in RBL. See 553 http://www.mail-abuse.com/enduserinfo.html
<LoudMouthMan> cinex, selinuxium this is probably a peering issue between nt-hell and vaguely isp
<selinuxium> LoudMouthMan: read above.
<LoudMouthMan> selinuxium, i am . i got it . sorry i was . ughm buttin in .
<mgdm> LoudMouthMan: I've been on those things for years.
<selinuxium> LoudMouthMan: not butting in at all! :) just making sure you saw the last post as I hit it just before you did! :)
<selinuxium> cinex: LoudMouthMan: Gotta bail out fo ra while, daughter needs a cards partner!
<cinex> LoudMouthMan: not jsut email. I cant access the site at all
<LoudMouthMan> mgdm, yep ., its nice when your GP informs you aint it ? mind you my Sister is a nurse so I have the benefit of overinformation.
<selinuxium> cinex, me either...
<LoudMouthMan> cinex, I can what ISP are you an selinuxium with ?
<cinex> we have blueyonder addresse
<LoudMouthMan> this sometimes happened with BT
<selinuxium> LoudMouthMan: Blueyonder/Virgin
<LoudMouthMan> yeah its going to be a peering / routing issue with your ISP and the net.
<selinuxium> LoudMouthMan: there have been strange things happening at virgin as they slowly move everything over to the one place.
<LoudMouthMan> BT used to do this to some of my clients such that it was not possible to connect to their server over the net from ntl/virgin.
<cinex> hmmmmm
<selinuxium> cya later all :)
<cinex> have fi selinuxium
<cinex> fun
<LoudMouthMan> i would suspect/suggest that its likely some one has not remembered to add a route to a router thingy ..
<cinex> for one website?
<cinex> how ddo you check other websites in the same region or whatever
<LoudMouthMan> cinex, well the website will be on a host with other domains so check with netcraft to see what other people are hosting there. its the IP thats not routing I would think .
<cinex> could do yeah
<cinex> need coffee first though
<cinex> whats the command to look up addresse? whois ?
<cinex> ns4.demysdns.co.uk
<cinex> ?
<LoudMouthMan> nah i just use netcraft and look at whats that ste running then start explornig
<cinex> well i cant reach that nameserver
<LoudMouthMan> wha ? www.netcraft.com ?
<cinex> ns4.demysdns.co.uk
<cinex> can get demys.com though
<popey> moo
<popey> cinex: host
<cinex> /etc/host?
<popey> alan@mother:~$ host popey.com
<popey> popey.com has address 212.13.194.80
<popey> popey.com mail is handled by 19 mail.popey.com.
<cinex> oh
<cinex> thanks lol. got confused for a min
<spd106> or you can use dig
<cinex> this netcraft just tells me what o/s the site works on ?
<cinex> 1.www.stwater.co.ukOctober 1999Pasporte is a UK based ISPWindows Server 2003
<LoudMouthMan> cinex, it also shows you the netblock owner and other sites on that block
<LoudMouthMan> if you surf around it a bit
<cinex> o sites were found in the netblock 'FTIP002864495 Equant Holdings Uk Ltd'.
<cinex> I get that error for each one
<LoudMouthMan> there you go then someone on your side of the net has screwed up a routing request with their peers then .
<LoudMouthMan> your packets are arriving via one path and attempting to return via another and then not finding a way back to you I suspect.
<cinex> im spoofin eh
<LoudMouthMan> uhm not quite . but close enough to describe the problem .
<LoudMouthMan> still hey youve learned how the net can break down eh
<cinex> http and it wants account information - takes the piss!
<Daviey> hmm
<Daviey> I'm here
<cinex> subnet mask ? NIC MAC address?
* Daviey feels that his ears are burning
<Daviey> better read scrollback to see what people have been saying behind his back..
<Daviey> ah
<Daviey> popey: were you wondering about team mythtv blessing?
<LoudMouthMan> cinex, theres nothing you should be chaging at your end of the connection since your end isnt broken its your ISP thats having trouble.
<LoudMouthMan> meanwhile cinex you might want to find a external proxy to surf against.
<constrictor> !ATI
<ubotu> To install the Ati/NVidia drivers for your video card, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto
<DaveMorris> cinex: Who's your ISP?
<Daviey> DaveMorris: do a whois :)
<cinex_> n clapping or cheering ?
<sampbar> bye all
