<morgs> edubuntugirl: today is a big day
<edubuntugirl> morgs: sure thing
<finalbeta> Anyone here from South-Africa? I recently graduated and just had a job offering from IBM to go work on a help desk Sandton (apparently they need dutch/English personnel) . I was planning on working in a foreign country sooner or later, but was thinking more about keeping it western like the US/Canada. I know this is a weird/much to general question, but are there things you can tell me about the country, culture, industrial state. Try
<finalbeta> ing to get a mental picture of it.
<Vhata> we're all from South Africa
<Vhata> "keeping it western"?
<finalbeta> Western culture.
<Vhata> and we live in huts and dance around fires every night?
<Vhata> *chuckle*
<finalbeta> Nor do they do that in china.
<Vhata> you don't get much more western than Sandton, I promise oyu
<finalbeta> Then I wonder why they need Dutch graduates to go sit in a help-desk.
<Vhata> maybe they need people who can speak Dutch
<highvoltage> ooh, happening here
<finalbeta> Well, dutch is supposed to be very similar to South-African, We can understand another when speaking, not sure if that would be the same with writing.
<Vhata> ja
<Vhata> it's called Afrikaans
<finalbeta> Ja ok dan, Afrikaans.
<Vhata> Afrikaans is partially derived from Dutch
<highvoltage> finalbeta: I've been to IBM in Sandton, it certainly looks like a nice working environment
<highvoltage> finalbeta: although I didn't see any of the help desks there yet
<finalbeta> Wikipedia sure is enlightening.
<highvoltage> yup
<morgs> finalbeta: Do you have specific questions about South Africa?
<morgs> Perhaps IBM are planning to do europe support from here...
<finalbeta> Nah, I guess I don't really know what I am looking for. just trying to get the feel of it. Don't really know what to expect. Will have to do some proper research. I know you don't live in huts, yet average life expectancy is 43years. So it can't be that western. Although there seems to be a great difference between rich and poor.
<finalbeta> Which probably explains all of that.
<morgs> That average is across a huge range of socio-economic conditions. Factors like HIV and crime affect the poor much more...
<morgs> finalbeta: Are you from Belgium?
<finalbeta> yep
<finalbeta> I'm Flemish.
<morgs> My sister studied music in Gent, and married a local. They live in Leuven...
<finalbeta> What a small world.
<Vhata> 40,075.16 km right round
<morgs> Yes - and then I met Mark van den Borre at the Ubuntu summit in California, and he's also from Leuven... (No they don't know each other!)
<finalbeta> mark is in #ubuntu-be, as I am.
<finalbeta> I'm not affiliated with the .be loco team though.
<Charl> night all :)
<highvoltage> morgs: yay, now I can go to sleep :)
<Vhata> what happened?
<morgs> highvoltage: me too, thanks for your cheering!
