<Brady_M> Update: We're overwhelmed by your responses, and we know the survey server is overloaded too. We're working on it, and the survey will remain open until March 23, so you'll have plenty of time to make your vote count.
<Brady_M> LOL!
<Vorian> scweet
<Vorian> and you can vote as much as you want!
<Atreus12> While on one hand I would like to see Dell provide computers with Linux preinstalled...
<Atreus12> Never underestimate the ability of dell to screw things up. What dell is going to do is take whatever Linux distro it picks, and add tons of 'dell media experience', 'dell support' type programs that are poorly written and hard to use. People might/will associate this with Linux in general.
<Atreus12> Any support that dell gives to the Linux community will be purely accidental.
<Vorian> give them a chance Atreus12
<Vorian> I think they will do good things :)
<Atreus12> I hope so.
<Atreus12> In any case, getting Linux out there is important
<Atreus12> so I filled out the survey
<Brady_M> Atreus12: I don't like Dell myslef 9because I own a computer store and make'em) but I still vote, because with the end result is demand for it will create other hardware manufactures to offer support for all their hardware, giving more choices to every Linux user. So then games, software, other things we kind of miss out on or have to "tinker" with to make work.
<Brady_M> just "work"
<Atreus12> Brady_M: Yeah, I agree. I just hope they stick to a vanilla install of whatever distro they pick
<Atreus12> What kind of shot do you think Ubuntu has against Suse for the dell distribution slot?
<Vorian> a very good shot
<Vorian> free support :)
<MarcM> hope dell looks popularity with community, not just enterprise, then Ubuntu becomes obvious
<Vorian> I got that from the survey.
<Brady_M> Atreus12: Dell doesn't have to offer the support for Ubuntu, but may work out somthing to refer support to us. So their bottom line is low.
<Brady_M> Just have to show we are as good at helping out people. I think the PC's might only be availible for purcheased online for a few years, but if sales are good, we might see it on the shelves. HP is waiting on the end result of Dell's move on this. they stated they already do it(which I know they do) and for them, it's cake because they been doing it for the last 6 years
<Brady_M> but only for enterprise
<DM|> HP already sells some PCs with Linux installed
<DM|> but that might be a 3rd party
<DM|> HP has good Linux compatabilty
<DM|> my Dell D820 laptop works great, internal mic is the only thing that gave me trouble
<Brady_M> IBM would follow suit with customer end lappys and they are already partnerd with suse, but may offer Ubuntu. they been supportive the entire time.
<Atreus12> Does that dell survey count multiple votes from the same IP?
<Brady_M> *shurg, possible cookie dunno

<ubot3`> Hi! Welcome to #ubuntu-ohio!

<Brady_M> My next car http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/03/19/2128249

<Vorian> hey brian_ :)
<brian_> So I've got a ? ... a really stupid ?
<DM|> no such thing
<DM|> unless u are asking the metacity of butter
* Vorian is full of stupid
<Vorian> :)
<brian_> I accidently deleted my wifi signal indicator off of my panel, and I can't figure out how to get it back up. I tried right clicking and add to panel to no avail
<DM|> add to the panel :....
<DM|> network monitor
<DM|> when its added..
<DM|> left click it and set it to your wirless card (eth1, ath0 or w/e it is )
<brian_> yeah, the only thing is it doesn't show the wifi signal, it shows the two blinking computers
<brian_> before it showed the bars
<DM|> follow the directions above
<DM|> u have to make it monitor your wireless card
<brian_> yeah I'm sorry, I did and it shows the computers?
<DM|> whats your wireless card
<DM|> eth1?
<brian_> eth2
<DM|> left click the icon
<brian_> ok, and it gives me an option, eth2, or lo
<DM|> k is eth2 selected
<brian_> yep, and it shows a signal strength indicator below it, but in the task panel itself, it shows the blinking computer icon
<DM|> hmm
<DM|> u have a ethernet cable plugged in atm?
<brian_> nope, sitting in my hotel room using the wifi
<DM|> also,.. have you changed iconsets
<brian_> hmmm.... that could be a possibility, should I try and reload the theme icons?
<DM|> aye, to the default gnome
<DM|> or default KDE if u use that
*** ubot3` is now known as ubot3

<DM|> ha u just said hi to yourself
<brian_> yeah, still standard icon.. argh
<DM|> what are you using to network ?
<DM|> default gnome stuff?
<brian_> yeah, default ubuntu
<DM|> how comfortable are you with compiling and installing
<brian_> not too comfortable, I've been copying and pasting code offline, but mostly when possible just using synaptic
<DM|> k one sec
<DM|> do this
<DM|> sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome
<DM|> in a terminal of course
<Vorian> brian_, this is a handy tool as well
<Vorian> http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=34645
<brian_> it says I'm running the newest version
<xaphan> gtkwifi > nm applet
<brian_> thx vorian
<DM|> ok type this in
<Vorian> ty xaphan!
<DM|> press ALT F2 then type in nm-applet --sm-disable
<Vorian> brian_, you'll have to add it to a panel
<DM|> Vorian :P hold on sparky, im walking him through it
<Vorian> >.<
<DM|> brian_ tell me what you see in your systray after u get that set up
<brian_> same stuff I saw before
<DM|> brian_ there should be a new icon
<DM|> brian_ hold on ill take a SS
<DM|> brian_ ah diff iconset,
<DM|> brian_ there should be in your systray, a new icon with 2 computers, left clik on that tell me what you see
<DM|> Vorian how do i take a delayed Screenie
<Vorian> what do you mean?
<DM|> nm got it
<brian_> hmmm... still only getting one computer
<DM|> hold on
<DM|> brian_ did you run nm-applet --sm-disable command?
<brian_> now I previouly went into session manager and changed the name of the nm-applet from nm-applet - disabled to nm-applet, does that make a difference?
<brian_> yeah
<DM|> when you LEFT click ont eh icon u should get something like this http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/7763/screenshotnw9.png
<DM|> or http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/images/wireless-at-tealuxe.png
<brian_> no I don't even get an extra icon
<DM|> hmm
<DM|> u have a network avail to do remote desktop ?
<DM|> in other words, do you have a routable IP address
<brian_> good ?, probably not since I'm using a hotel network?
<DM|> Vorian that could be one thing we could do. Set up an app for direct support
<DM|> Vorian like a direct2PC dell thing :)
<Vorian> DM|, it's in process :)
<DM|> brian_ aye, take a screenshot of your desktop and post it on image shack please
<Vorian> right jacobmp92 ^
<Brady_M> It's already possible
<DM|> Brady_M how
<brian_> You'd think they'd just have a separate icon for the wireless in the add to panel menu
<jacobmp92> Vorian: you sure you want that? ;)
* Vorian thinks
<jacobmp92> er wait, did you mean the screenshot or the desktop app?
* Vorian also closed the zoomtown thread
<DM|> remote desktop support
<Vorian> jacobmp92, support module :)
<Brady_M> DM|: System > Preferences > Remote desktop
<DM|> so we can hook up to their PC and show them
<jacobmp92> ok, ok :)
<DM|> Brady_M doesnt work if they dont have a nonroutable IP
<DM|> err if they have a non-routable....
<brian_> I could try, how do find my IP address?
<DM|> type in the terminal
<DM|> ifconfig
<Brady_M> DM|: Nope, it workie wanna see?
<jacobmp92> brian_: http://whatismyip.com
<brian_> how do I enable remote connection support
<jacobmp92> (or local router ip?)
<Vorian> remote connection is NOT a good idea
<DM|> jacobmp92 gets kinda tricky if their IP is static and behind a router, which he is
<Brady_M> DM|: Acutally ALLOT of issues right right have to open port 5900 on the firwall and get the users IP
* jacobmp92 agrees with VNC = bad
* DM| for new user support its a good thing
<Vorian> DM|, no
<jacobmp92> but you have all of that overhead that the user needs to set up
<DM|> yes... :P
<DM|> jacobmp92 aye.. thats the prob
<brian_> yeah that's my concern is the overhead
<jacobmp92> like port forwarding... firewall issues, proxies...
<Brady_M> DM|: He's right, still not technically easy.
<DM|> Brady_M oh i know its not easy
<Vorian> too many ethical problems......
<brian_> is there not a command to recompile/ repair the iconset?
<Vorian> *potential
<jacobmp92> VNC != secure by any means
<DM|> no need brian_

<jacobmp92> anyone happen to know the keyboard shoutcut to break a set of points into a new object in blender? :-p
<DM|> u dont have a systray
<DM|> do this brian_
<DM|> brian_ add to the panel "notification area"
<DM|> tell me whant thats done
<brian_> lol, that put 5 wireless signal indicators on my panel
<DM|> lol
<DM|> well u have nmapplet running a couple times im guessing
<DM|> do this
<DM|> System> Admin > System monitor
<DM|> tell me how many nm applets are running
<brian_> okay I closed 4 of them and now there's only one icon
<DM|> left click it
<brian_> ok
<DM|> and choose the network u want to connect to
<brian_> is there a way to move it over?
<DM|> brian_ use this applet as your network manager, the gnome default stinks, this makes it SO easy, and gives u what you want
<DM|> brian_ yeah right click the dotted line to the left of it, and select move, then lock it where u want
<theidiotthatisme> Howdy
<brian_> what's the preferred applet?

<brian_> thanks for all the help... that's just one of the learning curves of ubuntu. <DM|> brian_ cool :) gratz bro, soon u will want to get rid of windows then eh?
<DM|> Vorian very cool, now i am going... but do i need to BUY a ticket?
<Vorian> IDK
<brian_> not too sure about that. I do a lot of graphic design and I can't afford to ditch adobe/macromedia suite just yet. I've tried GIMP, but it's just not commercial quality yet.
<DM|> or can i help with out booth without haveing the full conference access
<DM|> brian_ Photoshop 7 works well with wine/crossover
<DM|> brian_ aye i dont like gimp much but it serves its purpose
<brian_> yeah, but I use Photoshop CS2 and the Macromedia Suite as well. I'm not one to hate on Windows... it's got it's +'s
<DM|> brian_ i use Photoshop CS2 9 under a VMware, i don thave windows natively installed
<brian_> that's cool. Hopefully the folks at Adobe will catch on and make a Linux version so you won't have to run it through a 3rd party software
<DM|> aye true that....
<DM|> i would actually buy it, again
<PWill> Brady_M: hey
<brian_> what do you recommend for media playback?
<PWill> did you find out about those headsets?

<DM|> nope
<xaphan> !!
<DM|> im trying to replcate it
<Atreus12> I got a quick question: How do I disable entries from my sources.list without deleting them
<Brady_M> Dm: htop allows you with the gui just kill the process ID with a click
<DM|> put a "#" in front of the line
<DM|> then save
<xaphan> sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
<Atreus12> will that take care of the automatic updates as well? I don't want to update Automatix every day anymore
<DM|> atreus12 "#" in most programming languages allow you to comment, or COMMENT OUT lines of code to be ignored by the compiler
<DM|> just slap it in front of the source line
<Atreus12> Yeah, I put a comment in fromt of them yesterday, but it still tried to update today
<xaphan> you sure it's pulling from that repo?
<DM|> xaphan where are the config files for conky
<Atreus12> xaphan: There's only one automatix entry if that's what you mean
<xaphan> /home/$HOME/.conkyrc
<xaphan> intersting
<Atreus12> could it be comming from some other sources list?
<xaphan> did you do sudo apt-get update after editing sources.list?
<Atreus12> no, hang on I'll do it
<theidiotthatisme> Sorry for disappearing guys
<theidiotthatisme> Got caught up in reading online lol
<Vorian> :)
<xaphan> >.>
<xaphan> i updated my PC
<xaphan> and lost all my nautilus scripts :(
<DM|> xaphan hello ?
<xaphan> DM| aye
<DM|> xaphan where are the config files for conky
<xaphan> /home/$HOME/.conkyrc
<DM|> no such file
<DM|> i do a search and conkyrc isnt anywhere on my HDD
<xaphan> sudo find . -name conky
<xaphan> does that return anything?
<DM|> its processing
<DM|> sec.
<DM|> nope
<xaphan> odd...
<xaphan> one sec
<Atreus12> xaphan: commenting out the lines in sources.list seems to make no difference. I have to click 'enable' or 'disable' in synaptic
* jacobmp92 is restarting system to head on to kernel-12... gulp
<DM|> atreus12 just uninstall automatix, its crap anyway
<xaphan> agreed
<xaphan> !automatix
<ubot3> automatix is a script that tries to install some software, and often fails and breaks systems. We don't provide support for it, and we strongly discourage its use. Problems caused by Automatix are often hard to track and solve, and it might sometimes be easier to !install a fresh copy of Ubuntu. See also !WorksForMe
<Atreus12> yeah, I actually agree
<Atreus12> that's why I am trying to stop it from updating
<Atreus12> so this is an automatix problem not a sources.list problem?
<DM|> removing it solves that problem : )
<xaphan> odd though
<DM|> its referenced in other sources prolly atreus12
<xaphan> i was under the impression that synaptic reads directly from /etc/apt/sources.list
<xaphan> i've never opened synaptic though...
<theidiotthatisme> Synaptic does read directly from the sources.list
<Atreus12> Even with the lines commented out, I run aptitude update and it gives me crap about unsigned keys in Automatix
<xaphan> ~/.conkyrc default configuration file
<Vorian> ah!
<Atreus12> so it's not just synaptic
<Vorian> !automatix > Atreus12 (please see the pm from ubot3)
<Atreus12> lol, I guess I'll just go for the fresh install when Feisty comes out
<jacobmp92> Vorian: kernel -12 seems to work fine here, it might be just an IDE issue (or a temporary bug with something completely unrelated)
<Vorian> agreed
<Vorian> I am using -11 till the next update :)
<jacobmp92> :-)

<S1ngleBarrel> you are only 2 hrs away
<Netboy541> yah
<S1ngleBarrel> I had to drive there every week with my last job ugh
<Netboy541> that would suck.
<Netboy541> i drive from hamilton to cincinnati every day. one hour there, one hour back...
<Netboy541> :(
<S1ngleBarrel> only when I got stuck in the whole tri-state rush hour
<Brady_M_at_work> PWill here's the link for the head sets. http://adminremote.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_ezcatalog&task=detail&id=60&Itemid=34
<PWill> Brady_M: Awesome! Thanks. I'll buy them sometime tonight.
<Netboy541> now this is cool: http://www.geekstuff4u.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=491
<Netboy541> USB hard drive enclosure that looks like a hard drive
<Netboy541> lol
<S1ngleBarrel> If I may....I am using a Ubuntu 6.10 desktop at work with an MS AD infrastructure. I have successfully setup the client to AD and can log in with AD domain user accounts. The two things that are stumping me is how to enable cached credentials (like Opensuse) and setup domain accounts in local security groups on the linux box. If I can solve these two items I am golden to roll a few of these desktops out.
<seekker> that's a bit over my head; I'll let the more technically savvy tackle that one ;)
<S1ngleBarrel> lol
<Brady_M_at_work> PWill: Oh It's an adra headset BTW
<S1ngleBarrel> I feel so bad since I feel like I am imposing on everyone by asking a question like that...feels like a big elephant just sat in the room
<Brady_M_at_work> I told you plantronics
<Brady_M_at_work> my bad
<Brady_M_at_work> S1ngleBarrel: Looking into it
<seekker> don't feel bad, S1ngleBarrel
<PWill> S1ngleBarrel: i can try to help
<seekker> you'll find that the users here and in the forums are the friendliest group of people ever
<S1ngleBarrel> eh its just one of those gut re-actions you get...I ask myself have I exhausted all sources before bothering someone...trust me I have searched and googled and searched some more for an answer to my question. So here I am lol
<Netboy541> don't feel bad S1ngleBarrel
<Netboy541> i got a TV card I've yet to get working... :(
<Brady_M_at_work> S1ngleBarrel: Official documentation https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryHowto
<S1ngleBarrel> Brady: thanks for the info but I got that part down pat
<seekker> Hey Brady, maybe as part of the NewUser page, we can keep track of these types of requests and put them there?
<seekker> like in a FAQ
<S1ngleBarrel> What I need goes a little further then what that article and the other AD based article that is in the wiki
<seekker> oops
<PWill> S1ngleBarrel: did you try installing libnss-ldap and nscd
<Netboy541> well...
<PWill> oop
<PWill> s
<Netboy541> ah!
<PWill> S1ngleBarrel: did you try installing libnss-ldap and nscd
<S1ngleBarrel> let me see I have done so many things it is hard to keep it all straight
<Brady_M_at_work> seekker in the works.
* seekker nods
<seekker> just throwing out suggestions
<S1ngleBarrel> I did not do the libnss-ldap method but went with the krb5 authentication/ winbindd
<PWill> ah
<PWill> so you did try it with pam?
<S1ngleBarrel> With the nscd in the Samba documentation it says that it is incompatible with Winbind
<PWill> oh
<S1ngleBarrel> both services can not be running at the same time.
<PWill> Well, I'm not too familiar with active directory, so that's where me help stop
<PWill> s
<PWill> you might try a forum post
<Netboy541> i tried the AD thing with server 2003, wound up eliminating the 2003 box.. :P
<S1ngleBarrel> I was thinking the same thing. I just want the functionality that it seems Opensuse has but again I really dislike that distro
<skippy> I do not recommend nscd.
<Brady_M_at_work> S1ngleBarrel: Talking with someone who admins it on a frequent basis. awaitng his suggestions
<skippy> I connected a Linux box to AD once. I'll need to do it again soon.
<skippy> I have a good link, hang on.
<skippy> http://blog.scottlowe.org/2007/01/15/linux-ad-integration-version-4/
<S1ngleBarrel> The setup that I currently have goes like this. I have a laptop that has successfully joined the MS AD domain. I can get successful krb5 tokens and winbind -u and winbind -g work perfectly in fetching and displaying AD user accounts and groups. I am just stuck on caching that information for offline use (it is a laptop) and setting up the domain account to utilize the local groups (so the domain account can use things like
<S1ngleBarrel> lol I hope all of that makes sense...
<skippy> S1ngleBarrel, I'm not sure that offline caching is possible.
<Brady_M_at_work> PGP key managment kurberos uhg! darnit were's that gui key managment app..
<Brady_M_at_work> skippy: Look for under istall pgp. theirs an app for pgp key mangement kerberos etc can be saved on it... (not at home to check.)
<Brady_M_at_work> :(
<Brady_M_at_work> it's in the repositories
<Brady_M_at_work> gkey I think it is
<S1ngleBarrel> I have been investigating how Opensuse does it and it appears that they can cache the login credentials and use it offline to allow a domain account to log into a disconnected system. In the smb.conf file they make references to winbind offline logon = true and a few other commands that I was able to track down. However when I attempt to use those with the version of Samba and winbind from the Deb repositories no dice.
<S1ngleBarrel> I have come to the conclusion they are using a highly modified version of those packages to get the action I need that being offline authentication
<Netboy541> is it gpgkey"?
<skippy> Brady_M_at_work, I'm not asking about gpg. Why are you sending that to me?
<Netboy541> nm..
<skippy> S1ngleBarrel, which version of Ubuntu are you using?
<S1ngleBarrel> 6.10
<skippy> so Samba 3.0.22
<S1ngleBarrel> yep and the version displayed in Opensuse is 3.0.23d or some letter of the alphabet
<S1ngleBarrel> I have been doing allot of reading on Suse ugh and I am thinking they are using an upstream version I believe the term is that gives them this added functionality. I am just hoping that Ubuntu has something similar or will have something similar soon.
<skippy> Fiesty uses Samba 3.0.24
<skippy> see http://packages.ubuntu.com/samba
<S1ngleBarrel> skippy, thanks for the info...I wonder if Fiesty will have these features in the deb package
<Brady_M_at_work> skippy: Sorry, I put you on the spot. :(
<skippy> huh?
<Brady_M_at_work> I was asking on S1ngle barrels questions
<skippy> ok
<Brady_M_at_work> I got the "Can Donation" up at the register for the Linuxfest. So far I got...... $1.00 :)
<Netboy541> I work at 5/3 in Cincinnati
<Netboy541> i'm working on converting the guys in my department
<Netboy541> :P
<Netboy541> i got one of my coworkers to install kubuntu on one of his machines last night
<Netboy541> or night before i mean
<Netboy541> he told me he was pleased with it....
<Netboy541> :P
* Brady_M_at_work highfives Netboy541
<Brady_M_at_work> Did one today too. :) My accountant insterested too.. see what happens
<Netboy541> nice.
<Netboy541> my friend and I are building a massive file server, among other things
<Netboy541> we have like 5 IBM eservers, a 2.2tb array, and a dl380
<Netboy541> i installed xubuntu on the dl380
<Netboy541> that was a chore...
<Netboy541> graphics where all jacked up, kept locking up @ 87%
<Netboy541> tried the alternative cd, worked fine... lol
<Netboy541> but, anyway, the rack is coming together
<Brady_M_at_work> LOL how many procs in that?
<Netboy541> i'll be posting pictures of it on my blog sooner or later
<Netboy541> 2x 1.13ghz
<Netboy541> 2 gig o' ram
<Netboy541> 6 36.6gb 15krpm drives
<Netboy541> we got the server for like 150 bucks
<Netboy541> there's a total of 7 actual servers in the rack right now... two UPS's, and the fibrechannel drive array....
<Brady_M_at_work> Netboy541: My best server I ever worked on was a SUN Sun Fire E4900 Server at AOL. HUUUUGE! I peed when I saw it http://www.sun.com/servers/midrange/sunfire_e4900/index.xml
<Brady_M_at_work> Combine up to twelve 1.8GHz or 1.5 GHz UltraSPARC IV+ and/or 1.35 GHz UltraSPARC IV processors
<Netboy541> holy cow
<Netboy541> 206 thousand dollars ?!!!?@!
<Brady_M_at_work> It's fully redundant
<Brady_M_at_work> 4 PSU's 2 mainboards 12 procs
<Brady_M_at_work> Memory capacity up to 192GB per domain
<Netboy541> nice.
<Netboy541> i still have my old trusty IBM netfinity server upstairs running RH9
<Netboy541> uptime so far is over 300 days
<Brady_M_at_work> Turning it off is very off the wall. no power buttons runs commands like domain01 = off or suspend
<Brady_M_at_work> it's ment to never go offline
<Netboy541> nice.... i wouldn't know where to start with a machine like that
<Brady_M_at_work> I had to keep notes on it because it would be like an annual thing that maybe memory would go bad, so remebering how it operated was a daunting
<Netboy541> sounds like it
<Netboy541> hah
<Netboy541> i was off a little
<Netboy541> 15:27:42 up 212 days
<Netboy541> that's my samba server upstairs... lol
<Brady_M_at_work> Sun's doing nutty stuff. I remeber them takling about hot swapable cpu's and memory bays. I wonder if they done that. (been out of the loop for 2 years
<Netboy541> when i worked at a place that did HP / Compaq's leased machine builds
<Netboy541> i broke a processor pack for a xeon server
<Netboy541> that was 18 thousand dollars.
<Netboy541> oops.
<Netboy541> one time we recived a full size rack full of fibrechannel drives
<Netboy541> the skid was mangled a bit
<Netboy541> and then, it fell
<Netboy541> face first.
<Netboy541> i almost cried.
<Netboy541> and then the alpha-server arrangement that I could stand inside
<Netboy541> that was cool
<Netboy541> no one knew how to make it work, but it was cool
<Netboy541> :P
<rrittenhouse> Brady_M, Happy (early) birthday :P
<xaphan> greetings
<derspankster> good day
