*** notskippy is now known as skippy
<skippy> aloha!
<Vorian> hey skippy :)
<cpradio> okay, how do you import mozilla thunderbird into evolution? it seems thunderbird no longer uses the mbox storage method....
<cpradio> nm, needed to find the MBOXIMPORT extension
<skippy> I don't think Evolution can import from Thunderbird.
<skippy> happy St. Practice night.
<Vorian> St. Practice eh?
<Brady_M_at_work> Export the file as a text with commas file. should port over. and mail. I know .cvs is supported isn't it?
<cpradio> the mbox-import extension in firefox allow me to import into evolution. so I am okay now.
<Soccer5555> hey anybody know when you change your clock ahead
<Soccer5555> one hour
<Soccer5555> tonight at midnight or tomorrow at midnight
<cpradio> does anyone know if evolution has a plugin to do archiving, like in Outlook?
<skippy> Soccer5555, tomorrow night
<skippy> cpradio, I don't know.
<Soccer5555> k
<derspankster> I have no friends
<Vorian> Thats what we were just talking about :P
<Vorian> how did you know?

<PWill> just back from Vorian's house*

<derspankster> unfair
<derspankster> just living in my own little world here
<PWill> skippy: did you go to freegeek on thursday?
<skippy> PWill, I did not.
<cpradio> anyone ever try to give a wireless card a static ip address?
<Vorian> cpradio, yep
<cpradio> ever have problems with doing that?
<skippy> never had problems.
<Vorian> nope :)
<Vorian> Brady_M, really, you should use irssi or xchat
<cpradio> okay, I setup the interface to be static with the netmask, gateway, and address. Then I ran /etc/init.d/networking restart
<skippy> mayhem is about to ensue: the grandparents are here playing Wii bowling
<skippy> cpradio, "setup the interface" how?
<Vorian> wii bowling heh
<cpradio> editing /etc/network/interfaces
<cpradio> its just much easier modifying it by hand.
<skippy> cpradio, radio; all you need to do is type `sudo ifdown ethX; sudo ifup ethX` where X is the interface number.
<cpradio> tried that, but it doesn't get the static ip address
<skippy> no need to restart networking entirely via /etc/init.d/networking
<cpradio> it still refuses to use the static ip....
<skippy> that's odd.
<skippy> did you do `ifdown ethX` ?
<cpradio> its making me mad. I have done this successfully on all of my desktops, but for the life of me, this laptop won't do it. Yep. Mine is actually ifdown wlan0
<skippy> maybe kill any dhclient daemons that are still running?
<cpradio> i have even tried rebooting
<skippy> you sure your /etc/network/interfaces file is set correctly? can you pastebin it?
<skippy> cpradio, I've not seen a system fail to take a static IP declaration in /etc/network/interfaces before. Something somewhere must be interfering.
<cpradio> the other problem I am having and it might be related, is that the wireless won't connect immediately after a reboot.
<cpradio> it acts like it isnt setup anymore
<skippy> I've sometimes had that at home... I sometimes need to manually set the ESSID.
<cpradio> well, I have to do that. I don't broadcase the ESSID
<DM|> Evening all

* Vorian highfives Brady_M
<skippy> cpradio, your config looks correct. Hrm.
<Soccer5555> but linux needs windows people
<Soccer5555> who else will take the brunt of the viruse
<skippy> I drop Ubuntu CDs around my building at work, on the off-chance someone picks it up and uses it.
<cpradio> i know it does... do you think its because nm-applet is doing the actual connection to the wireless network?
<cpradio> and if so, where does it store its' config file
<skippy> I should really create an insert card explaining Ubuntu Ohio as a support mechanism
<skippy> nm-applet is a front-end to the NetworkManager daemon. I've no idea where those configs are stored.
<skippy> cpradio, does dmesg show anything?
<skippy> anything in /var/log/message, /var/log/syslog, or /var/log/daemon.log ?
<skippy> does the wireless card work when it's assigned a DHCP address?
<cpradio> yes, it is working right now
<cpradio> just wont use the static ip
<skippy> I give up. Boot Windows and move on.
<skippy> Ubuntu hates you.
<Brady_M> >:o
<Soccer5555> is this a wireless problem
<skippy> it is
<Soccer5555> i had a problem like that i didnt solve it but maybe i can dirrect you to a person that did solve it for me
<cpradio> yep. wireless wont use the static ip address
<Soccer5555> oh
<cpradio> anyone know how NetworkManager works? how does it start and stop the wireless connection?
<skippy> it communicates via dbus
<Soccer5555> i have no idea
<skippy> /etc/NetworkManager/ has some stuff.
<cpradio> i've never used gnome before, so I am trying my best to find my way around. I know KDE very well, but my wife as usual has to make things a tad difficult. :-P
<skippy> http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/
<cpradio> all I have is dispatcher.d in the /etc/NetworkManager
<cpradio> and that is just a script
<cpradio> it receives parameters, but from unknown locations
<cpradio> anyone else think that site means it uses dhcp and is overriding my static ip interface?
<cpradio> that at least is what I am reading into it
<skippy> it might.
<skippy> try stopping NetworkManager
<skippy> you can add wireless commands to /etc/network/interfaces, too -- maybe set your ESSID there?
<cpradio> if I do that, then I need to write a script to setup the network and run it. and I did that years ago, but I don't remember how to do that anymore
*** skippy is now known as notskippy
<cpradio> nm, solved it
<cpradio> http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/9579/
<cpradio> thanks skippy for your help
<cpradio> it seems NetworkManager does override the interfaces setup in /etc/network. That kinda sucks, but ohwell.
<PWill> :( where's Vorian?
<PWill> or meatballhat
<Brady_M> He was here just 30 min ago picking on me. I don't know now.
<PWill> lol
<PWill> I got my friend to join the team
<PWill> And he has to be approved
<DM|> goodnithg all
<cpradio> new interesting question for everyone, anyone dare try to install .NET 2.0 in Wine? I think I got IE 6 installed (was a prereq for .NET 2) and am in the middle of trying to install .NET 2, but all I see is weird symbols
<PWill> anybody awake? i'm bored
*** notskippy is now known as skippy
<Seekker> morning
<skippy> aloha
<Seekker> ;)
<Seekker> bbiab
<derspankster> yes, a gnome
<cpradio> what is the Deskbar applet for gnome panels?
<cpradio> also, anyone use evolution? Where can I find a System Tray indicator?
<PWill> cpradio: sudo apt-get install mail-notification-evolution
<cpradio> is that the system tray plugin? As there is a sound notification plugin already installed it seems
*** Black5un is now known as ^SuRe|wife
<cpradio> nm, figured it otu. Thanks PWill
<cpradio> what are good applications in gnome to use a scanner with?
<PWill> xsane
<chad> hello all
<PWill> hey
<chad> how's it going PWill?
<PWill> good
<PWill> you?
<chad> not too bad, thanks
<chad> do you know where the wallpapers are stored?
<chad> what folder?
<PWill> chad: sorry, i was away
<PWill> go to /usr/share/wallpapers
<PWill> i think
<PWill> nope
<PWill> try /usr/share/backgrounds
<PWill> that should be it
<cpradio> in the Open Dialog in Gnome, there is a 'Documents' button, how do I change where that links to?
<PWill> what
<cpradio> let me take a screenshot and post it
<cpradio> http://cpradio.org/images/Dialog.png -- I want to customize the 'Documents' button to point to a specific folder
<cpradio> bbiab, need to go run a few errands.
<PWill> oh, i dunno
<cpradio> :(
<cpradio> this experience with gnome has made me wish that gnome were more straight forward like KDE. in KDE it is easy to modify those buttons, just right-click and tell it the new path
<cpradio> lol, I figured it out. Documents points to /home/<username>/Documents
<cpradio> guess I will just rename the folder I want it to go to, to Documents
