<popey> morning
<popey> morning
<GazzaK> morning o popey one
* popey notes he is now seeding the feisty herd5 cds
<GazzaK> herd5, woo
<daviey> wish i was running herd5 - i'm running an upto date herd4 :(
<popey> just update and you will be on herd5
<popey> herd5 is just a pressing of the iso on that day
* daviey was using a hint of sarcasim, sorry
<daviey> in #ubuntu+1 there are loads of people asking how to install herdy ontop of herdx
<popey> ahh
<daviey> I love the thaw from a freeze! So many updates
<popey> :)
<popey> lots of x updates today
* GazzaK is just doing updates, fingers crossed
* popey is liking his new popey.com theme
<GazzaK> it needs a bit of pink
<popey> :)
<GazzaK> updates done, should I weeboot and see what dies?
<GazzaK> well, that worked :-)
<GazzaK> erm, anyone know a command for creating cpu load?
<daviey> GazzaK, open up any application that i have written 'efficiently'?
<daviey> popey, did you notice the 'zooming' feature of the map in ubiquity has been disabled?
<GazzaK> daviey,
<GazzaK> :-)
<GazzaK> I cannot get my cpu above 800Mhz
<daviey> what do you have?
<daviey> is it dual core?
<GazzaK> nope
<GazzaK> boring 2.0Ghz intel cpu
<GazzaK> but I've never seen it above 800Mhz
<GazzaK> I obviously do not do any "work" on this lapdog
<daviey> ahhh, laptop
<daviey> there are cpu options for scaling
<daviey> you can manually set it, found it on a blog
<daviey> GazzaK, try http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/11/04/enabling-cpu-frequency-scaling/
<GazzaK> not that bothered actually, was just playing
* GazzaK has headache
<daviey> hang over?
<GazzaK> might be
<GazzaK> I blame the cat
<daviey> "have you drunk 'nuff water"?
<GazzaK> yeah
<GazzaK> yay, enabled the cpu freq monitor, blimey, speedstep is quick
<popey> GazzaK: if you want to run your cpu at 100%, go to hants lug website and search for Hugos random benchmark :)
<popey> paste the line into a shell and you will get 5-50 seconds of 100% cup
<popey> cpu
<GazzaK> wooo
<LoudMouthMan> morning
<popey> lo
<LoudMouthMan> i obviously did something bad in a previous life . ive got 5 windows laptops to repair this weekend and its a BCF weekend as well !
<popey> GazzaK: feisty locked up hard here, decided to reboot :)
<GazzaK> popey, real 0m11.197s user 0m10.981s sys 0m0.020s
<GazzaK> what do they mean :-)
<GazzaK> popey, it locked up on doing the updates?
<GazzaK> LoudMouthMan, can you not stick ubuntu on these laptops?
<popey> its a crap speed test GazzaK
<LoudMouthMan> gazzak um no . the clients want/need windows but they do mostly have FOSS apps on them
<popey> sees how fast your machine can count to a billion
<popey> mine is the fastest at the moment :)
<LoudMouthMan> first laptop job run l0ph crac k to discover password for administrator and reset user accounts to enable user login.
<GazzaK> so mine takes 11 seconds to count to a billion then?
<popey> yes
<popey> run it a few times
<GazzaK> woo, clever lapdog
<popey> take the best value
<popey> mine takes 6.5 seconds
<LoudMouthMan> whays you upto then gazzak ?
<popey> my laptop also takes 11s
<GazzaK> LoudMouthMan, just messing about
<GazzaK> today I am mostly sitting about drinking coffee
<GazzaK> got two cheques to pay in \o/
<GazzaK> 150 squid council tax refund and 50 squid back from BT
<LoudMouthMan> hmmmm coffee good idea. im mostly rebuilding laptops , making coffee ( well reminded gazzak ) and watching DLTV
<GazzaK> DLTV?
<GazzaK> downloaded TV?
<GazzaK> arghhh I see dust!!!
<GazzaK> damn glass TV stand
<LoudMouthMan> its a Ziff Davis ipTV show with Patrick Norton and Robert Heron and they talk tech headlines of the week and pimp some gadgets and stuff. they tried ubuntu three weeks ago but it bombed on them also !
<GazzaK> so... I might be cleaning the house too then
<LoudMouthMan> speakingof which Im trying this miracle dry wash stuff today to see how well it performs.
<GazzaK> it's a miracle!!!!
<LoudMouthMan> well see !
<LoudMouthMan> we'll even !
<GazzaK> whats it for? carpets?
<LoudMouthMan> no cars and windows
<LoudMouthMan> http://www.miracledrywash.com/
<LoudMouthMan> and no i am not 1) affiliated 2) on commision 3) a supplier 4) parabolic marketing them !
<GazzaK> it works on cars, so a member of my mx5 car club says
<LoudMouthMan> but the owner is a local business man and ive known him in the local area for quite a long time .
<LoudMouthMan> so why are you hammering CPU with popey then ?
<GazzaK> LoudMouthMan, get him to send me free samples, so the mx5oc can endorse his product?
<GazzaK> LoudMouthMan, cpu - i'd never seen it reported above 800Mhz
<LoudMouthMan> hah a okay I will email you and cc him and see if you can blag them !
<GazzaK> okie
<LoudMouthMan> I think he should put his website videos on you tube though . cant think why his webdesigner hasnt suggested that yet!
<GazzaK> who was that? you?
<LoudMouthMan> har de har .. do I strike you as a designer ? have you not seen a) my spelling c) my proofreading 3 ) my design.
<GazzaK> erm, yeah, good point
<GazzaK> colourblind?
<LoudMouthMan> no .
<LoudMouthMan> just word
<GazzaK> spillink of a child?
<LoudMouthMan> thing is, no one spots my spelling errors when im talking in real life !
<GazzaK> taste like lawrence lewellen-bowen?
<GazzaK> red tarts palace?
<LoudMouthMan> pmsl . who you ? or me ?
<GazzaK> gonna move the living room about today
<GazzaK> you
* GazzaK is joking
<daviey> bah... broken laptop - looks fine to me http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300086581250
<GazzaK> daviey, a bit of blu-tack and all would be fine
<daviey> looks like a bargain
<GazzaK> erm, yeah
<LoudMouthMan> hmm I was thinknig a Bit of gaffa tape a little hot glue and a lick of black paint should fix it up .
<LoudMouthMan> Ill fixit for you for 600pounds and for that i'll upgrade the cpu, disk, casing, screen, components, powersupply, operating system, packaging and warrant.
<daviey> I'm amazed how much olf laptops go for. Years ago they would be in the bin or given away
* GazzaK has a few spare ones at work, gathering dust
<LoudMouthMan> yeah but I think the market is driven by students and Xubuntu users oh and student xubuntu users
* GazzaK is away, doing housey things
<daviey> Thing is i want an old laptop for a 'project' but can't bear to rip apart my 1ghz old laptop
<daviey> i need a dinosaur
<LoudMouthMan> another local company i know who sell refrurbed laptops , just read their words of wisdom http://www.thelaptopspecialist.co.uk/en/Tips4.aspx
<Seeker`> morning all
<LoudMouthMan> hey seeker`
<daviey> Anybody want to come to my laptops birthday party?
<Seeker`> daviey: ?
<LoudMouthMan> seeker we are mocking ( gently ) http://www.thelaptopspecialist.co.uk/en/Tips4.aspx
<daviey> Seeker`, morning
<daviey> LoudMouthMan, notice the '?' at the end.
<Seeker`> how is everyone?
<LoudMouthMan> no ?
<LoudMouthMan> fine ?
<LoudMouthMan> right next laptop job fix emails and resolve vpn connectivity ( I suspect PEBKAC ) usage.
<LoudMouthMan> urgh , by the look of it this user uses screen wips for crt screens to clean his laptop screen.
<GazzaK> screen wips?
<GazzaK> is that like a whip?
* popey has some den-defragging to do
<popey> going to get rid of a desk
<Seeker`> i'm so bored
<popey> and sell my telly on ebay i think
<LoudMouthMan> could be a wipe . but frankly with my focus.
<GazzaK> I need shelving....
<popey> yeah, need more storage here
<LoudMouthMan> really useful box shopping is my new fetish, i dont think you can have enough really useful boxes.
<popey> no good for filing tho
<GazzaK> not good for making a library either
<LoudMouthMan> but they're really useful boxes ! it says so on the box. it must be useful it tells me so !
<popey> :)
<popey> sucker :)
<popey> right, shops
<GazzaK> LoudMouthMan, do you want to buy a tub of invisible ink?
<popey> ttfn
<popey> hahah
<GazzaK> bye popey
<LoudMouthMan>
<LoudMouthMan> I used that ink before Gazzak , its rubbish inthe channel though
<LoudMouthMan>
<GazzaK> so it is
* GazzaK off shopping :-)
* LoudMouthMan moves onto third laptop . this one is a kill the borked msinstaller install shield problem.
<jamesbrose> wheres a good place to get linux fonts from?
<apokryphos> jamesbrose: kdelook.org had a link where there's like 6000 I believe, check there
<Norf-ubu> g'day
*** ubot3` is now known as ubot3
<Norf-ubu> !botsnack
<ubot3> Yum!
<LoudMouthMan> so the forth laptop to be fixed today . the client managed to burst those little bags of silica gel sachets in the laptop bag and into the keyboard. I am currently using canned air to blow those little balls away !
<LoudMouthMan> darn wheres gazzak when you need a entendre
<goblimey> is there a live cd that i can remote into by default after boot ?
<goblimey> i need to get into a machine with no keyboard or mouse
<goblimey> and its the only sata HDD machine here so i cant even move the HDD to another machine
<goblimey> or a rescue cd that allows remote by default ?
<X3N> goblimey: yes
<X3N> the ubuntu install cd is a live cd
<X3N> you have to get ssh running after it's booted from the cd though
<goblimey> no keyboard or mouse - cant start anything - cant even access bios -
<X3N> why can't you put a keyboard on to it ?
<goblimey> usb only, and usb has died
<goblimey> not even got a ps/2 port
<X3N> what can you do once you've got ssh access anyway
<X3N> goblimey: this might be useful http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Headless_Knoppix
<goblimey> thx ill take a look
<X3N> or this goblimey http://www.alti.at/knowhow/obsdlivecd/fw.php
* goblimey thx X3N again
<X3N> i'd suggest getting one of those usb pci thingers though
<popey> could you put an ide disk in it?
<X3N> good afternoon popey
<popey> lo
<goblimey> yeh but if it needs any adjustment to bios its no go
<popey> most machines boot from ide before sata
<X3N> especially if you took the sata drive out
<goblimey> its worth a try ;)
<popey> heh
<popey> i assumed you wanted the sata disk in there to get data off it
<goblimey> i do
<goblimey> but there is also info i want that is on a ide disk currently set as slave
<popey> does it have an OS on it?
<goblimey> no
<goblimey> Doh - of course i can get that info anyway by transferring to another machine
<goblimey> its the info on the sata thats gonna be hard
<popey> not if you get the data off the ide, install linux on it, put it back, boot from it
<goblimey> ;)
<goblimey> dynebolic might be even easier
<ubot3> New news from planetuk: Caroline Ford: Guys <http://secretlondon.livejournal.com/137706.html>
<popey> man, she knows how to blog
<X3N> she's unemployed its pretty much all she does
<X3N> i quite enjoy reading her life
<X3N> it's like a mini soap opera
<popey> :)
<michelmichel> hi there all - is there anyone here that can help with installing the infamous dvb card the artec t1 an2235chip?
<GazzaK> hey LoudMouthMan
<GazzaK> did you have fun blowing your balls?
*** diocles is now known as diocles_
<LoudMouthMan> yeah I did and then I moved onto the fifth laptop , the final build which was a new laptop which required all amounts of commercial software installed. which amazes me that its acceptable to take time and money to put that much effort into getting systems functional and productive
*** diocles_ is now known as diocles
<GazzaK> LoudMouthMan, what software?
<LoudMouthMan> well vista was on the box but then we had to purchase Norton ( company policy ) and Office 2003 professional and project planner and adobe distiller. we also had to download and install the aol software and we had to download and install palm software. that plus my time as a value took a 500 pound laptop to well over 1k to become productive.
<LoudMouthMan> well vista was on the box but then we had to purchase Norton company policy and Office 2003 professional and project planner and adobe distiller. we also had to download and install the aol software and we had to download and install palm software. that plus my time as a value took a 500 pound laptop to well over 1k to become productive.
<LoudMouthMan> ierd thing with rackets there.
<GazzaK> so office 2003 pro is £350, project is £150, so you did not charge much then
<LoudMouthMan> well Im trying to be polite but okat a further 150 for 2hours of my time.
<GazzaK> it's annoying isn't it....
<LoudMouthMan> but if I was a employee of a company that would be more like 25 for two hours.
<GazzaK> basically, cost of ownership for a windows box is so high
<GazzaK> our builds are all done via ghost images, so it reduces time spent per machine
<LoudMouthMan> and so well hidden and defrayed and subjective that people just assume its free software is okay ony if your time is free is a smart retort. but they forget that paid for software isnt free and neither is your time.
<GazzaK> but the cost is still stupid, laptop + office + lotus notes + virus checker + any other apps = ££££
<LoudMouthMan> but , and heres the kicker. Enterpise image builds are not common to many SME market IT departments .
<GazzaK> quite
<GazzaK> two hours (thats a min actually) soon starts costing companies a lot, even if it is their staff
<LoudMouthMan> so incorporate the large amount of 1 man IT departments and factor in their costs to productivy as a value of the GDP and its gotta be smarter to really look at open source ! sigh.
<LoudMouthMan> now add the next factor.
<LoudMouthMan> The client in this case had to wait to return for a new laptop. he couldnt but a laptop and use a company provided disk image to install all his applications pre-accredited to thecompany.
<LoudMouthMan> so the client was being non-productive for a long period before they could find and locate their it department ( me ) to enable them to resume productivity.
<GazzaK> if my company rolled out ubuntu - small training costs for the IT & general staff, lotus client costs (same as the windows cost) and we could use all the built in software and save a fortune
<LoudMouthMan> versus they could have used Ubuntu CD to get back to work .
<GazzaK> but I got told to not even pursue looking into it!!!
<LoudMouthMan> anyway thats all the laptops done my work for the day has paid for the week so this weeks work is bonus.. or I could bunk off . yay !
<GazzaK> hehe
<GazzaK> how much have you made today then Nik?
<LoudMouthMan> enough .
<GazzaK> sorry that was nosy
* GazzaK slaps me
<GazzaK> erm
* GazzaK slaps GazzaK
<ikonia> evening chaps
<LoudMouthMan> heeheh I geddit dont worry . but you can guess that if I charge 60 pound a hour and have a base rate of 3 hours per laptop rebuild and I had 5 laptops im happy .
<GazzaK> I do like time out on the weekends, but I'd love to do one days OT and have the choice of a week off or a weeks extra money
<LoudMouthMan> i would prefer not to have to do it at all since the money can be earned elsewhere but doing this means having more time this week to focus on clients business.
<GazzaK> is that cash in hand btw
<LoudMouthMan> no , its all invoiced properly
<GazzaK> cool
* GazzaK runs off to look into self employed status
<LoudMouthMan> cash in hand heheh thats dangerous talk . the tax men listen everywhere.
<ikonia> /whois taxman
<GazzaK> lol
<GazzaK> hey ikonia
<ikonia> hello
<GazzaK> taxman :No such nick/channel - phew he's not found freenode yet :p

<GazzaK> nickspam!!!!
<ikonia> he he
<LoudMouthMan> anyway off to watch some videos
<ikonia> Has anyone got a good understanding of how the apache2 modular layout is set out in ubuntu
<ikonia> I'm struggling with the php5 module not serving pages. Looking at the layouts I've got the php5.load file - which points to a lib thats fine with fine permissions, and it also adds the "AddType" directive for php without issue, yet php pages are just not being served
<ikonia> trashbat.co.uk ?
<ikonia> sorry .co.ck
<GazzaK> ikonia, be careful to not get banned for Offtopic chat!
<ikonia> off topic, thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware there was a "topic" in tapthru
<GazzaK> yep, help
<GazzaK> ikonia, hehe, your "attitude" - excellent... :-)
<ikonia> its the truth
<ikonia> the way he was typing just reminded me
<GazzaK> really, thats amazing
<ikonia> yup
<ikonia> I half remembered his nick - then when I read the conversation it clicked
<popey> evening all
<GazzaK> I was there when he spammed and abused us in #gaygeeks he started asking nice but nosey questions, ended up spamming and typing rude words
<GazzaK> evening petal
<popey> Now, the important question of the evening is..
<popey> Do I drink the Leffe first or the Duvel?
<ikonia> leffe
<ikonia> is the only option
<popey> :)
<GazzaK> leffe
<GazzaK> quickly
<popey> I have the proper glasses for both
<popey> so it will be a good evening
<ikonia> leffe is the only choice
<Norf-ubu> Leffe you philastine <grins>
<Norf-ubu> enjoy
<GazzaK> you don't need glasses, you need a funnel
<Norf-ubu> cut out the middle man - chug it!
<GazzaK> or right from the bottle, jam in in your throat
<Norf-ubu> good call
<popey> :)
<ikonia> GazzaK: you thug - you don't "chug" a beer like leffe
<Norf-ubu> you do... in private
<ikonia> no no no on
<ikonia> enjoy it
<Norf-ubu> or is that just me being an alcoholic ?
<ikonia> yes, probably
<Norf-ubu> <<< reads twelve steps
<ikonia> where are you chaps from ?
* popey upgrades his site to drupal 5
<GazzaK> ikonia, the UK hopefully :p
<Norf-ubu> if you ever get the chance - Enville Ale.... yum
<Norf-ubu> I'm from the isle of Black Country
<ikonia> GazzaK: I mean a little more specific or localised
<GazzaK> ikonia, Colchester :p
<Norf-ubu> oh specific - M5 Junction 2
<ikonia> Norf-ubu: petesbourough ?
<Norf-ubu> 2nd at the island and you'll see me staggering...
<Norf-ubu> no..... midlands
<Norf-ubu> where the yam yams come from
<ikonia> ahhhh
<ikonia> hope you don't think I'm being nosey, just curious to where you guys where from as this is a uk channel
<Norf-ubu> i'm from the posh part - we wear pin stripped donkey jackets n flaired wellies
<ikonia> flash
<Norf-ubu> drive capri's with go faster stripes... oh its all go around here matey
<ikonia> sold, I'm moving down there
<Norf-ubu> popey: stop staring at the Leffe n drink it :|
<popey> its in the other room
<popey> it is a reward
<popey> once I finish a task here
<Norf-ubu> i'm not going to ask.
<popey> 20:09 * popey upgrades his site to drupal 5
<Norf-ubu> i'm sure in an alternate dimension where i have a brain, that would mean something <grins>
<GazzaK> Norf-ubu, it's website CMS stuff
<popey> I am upgrading the site you see at http://popey.com/ to look possibly like the one you see at http://dev.popey.com/
<ikonia> any of you chaps got a good grip on the apache2 modular layout in ubuntu ?
<Norf-ubu> yeah :| - take no notice - finish n enjoy - Leffe o#is awaiting
<popey> ikonia: what do you want to know?
<GazzaK> popey, they both look horrid
<popey> why thank you
<Norf-ubu> takes two points off GazzaK - incorrect answer :P
<popey> fixed that broken link on your lug site yet? ;p
<popey> bugger, you have :)
<GazzaK> haha
<GazzaK> popey, :p
<GazzaK> Norf-ubu, popey knows I'm joking with him
<ikonia> popey: well, I've installed the php5 module for apache2. I'm having the old issue of php pages not being served, being asked ot download. Normally quite straight forward to resolve. However I must be missing something in the modular layout. I've got the php5.load file which points are the correct lib on the fily system, so I assume thats being loaded. I also have the AddType directive for php in the apache config, and the php5.conf adds the cor
<ikonia> rect "addmodule" line into the config so I can't see why the page is not being downloaded
<GazzaK> OMG, spam paste :p
<popey> mmmmm spam paste
<ikonia> a tad long yes
<Norf-ubu> hands two points back and nods in acknowledgment towards Popey <grin>
<popey> ikonia: error_log?
<popey> I quite like the theme at dev.popey.com
<ikonia> not a thing in the error log
<ikonia> access log shows it trying to get the page
<ikonia> its almost like php5 module is not loaded - but it appears to be
<GazzaK> popey, so do I, but I wanted you to think twice :p
<popey> the Duvel won
<ikonia> popey: did you have any thoughts on my apache/php5 issue /
<ikonia> ?
<popey> sorry, no
<ikonia> no problem
<ikonia> just curious as I'm at a bit of a wall
<popey> however..
<popey> lemme check a machine here
<popey> libapache2-mod-php5 that installed?
<popey> and when you run "sudo a2enmod php5" it says "This module is already enabled!"
<ikonia> checking
<ikonia> popey: nope - well done
<ikonia> testing
<popey> :)
<popey> also
<popey> sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload
<popey> after you have enabled the module
<ikonia> yeah thats fine
<ikonia> just testing
<ikonia> can you test this - it looks like firebox is playing up for me https://puzzle.eventy.co.uk/squirrelmail/
<popey> blankety blank page
<ikonia> yeah not my firefox then
<ikonia> time to go back to debugging
<popey> check for errors in error_log
<popey> also.. could be memory related
<Norf-ubu> looks like a snowman in a snow storm
<popey> I just had an issue with drupal, too much memory == blan kpage
<ikonia> I'll investigate thanks for the tip
<ikonia> fixed it

<ziadoz> can any clarify something for me about this? http://debianadmin.com/copper/albums/edgy/22.png
<ziadoz> can i change the location of GRUB at this stage of the install by changing the text in that box?
<cinex> hi
<Owdgit> Lo
<cinex> With azureus I have a problem getting a port to open. its ocnfigured on my router and in the iptables-save it shows: "-A tcp_inbound -p udp -m udp --dport 66666 -j ACCEPT and -A tcp_inbound -p udp -m tcp --dport 66666 -j ACCEPT" but still I get NAT errors when I test the port.
<cinex> is there something I'm missing. That would have worked in fedora (as far as I know)
<cinex> (the tcp one was, wrongly, edited to save me copying and pastign twice :P)
<cinex> -A tcp_inbound -p tcp -m tcp --dport 66666 -j ACCEPT
<cinex> -A tcp_inbound -p udp -m udp --dport 66666 -j ACCEPT
