<Zuph> Stupid proftpd
<Zuph> Anyone have any idea what this means: - warning: unable to determine IP address of '_'
<|{evin> it means that it can't determine the ip address of _
<Zuph> I dont' have a _ set in my hosts or anything, though
<Zuph> oh well, I fixed it, but not the way I watned
<Zuph> *wanted
<jkeyes0> btw, etank, I got a call from apani systems today.
<bkingx> Howdy everyone!
<bkingx> Whassup?
<Koji-Murasame> Nothing, so far as I can tell. . .
<bkingx> Koji-Murasame, don't think we have met.
<bkingx> So you are new here?
<Koji-Murasame> Yeah, I just found this channel today
<bkingx> Awesome! And have you checked out all the other resources we have?
<Koji-Murasame> Browsed them briefly. I've been a little busy,
<bkingx> The topic has links to the launchpad, wiki, forums, etc.
<bkingx> Cool!
<bkingx> Vry nice to have you!
<bkingx> We are having our weekly Team meeting tomorrow night. Feel free to join us.
<bkingx> It's at 8:00pm
<Zuph> Hey, people are talking.
<bkingx> You'll get a better idea of what we are about.
<Koji-Murasame> Thanks. I'm interested in talking to people locally who use *buntu distros.
<bkingx> Zup Zuph?
<Zuph> http://herodotus.zuph.com is.
<bkingx> We are getting heavy into it and working toward supporting and promoting Ubuntu in our state!
<Zuph> Also I got my CDs today.
<bkingx> Awesome!
<bkingx> And what the heck is that url?
<Zuph> that's the virtual machine sitting in my living room right now.
<Zuph> I've been working on getting the damn thing up for the past 2 days.
<bkingx> Cool!
<bkingx> Looks like you got it now!
<bkingx> Anyone using Beryl?
<Koji-Murasame> Oh, the first and last links in the topic don't work for me.
<Zuph> IBM xSeries 335, Dual 2.0 Xeon, 1.5gb of Ram, Ubuntu Server Host running 2 Ubuntu Server Guests.
<Koji-Murasame> Yup. I just installed Beryl last week
<bkingx> Can you tell me how to get back to the regular gdm? Mine is crashed and X server won't load.
<bkingx> try it as regular http, Koji-Murasame
<Koji-Murasame> Beryl had a crash manager in place on my version. I'm not too technical, so I might not be the best resource. . .
<Koji-Murasame> Still nada on those links. . .
<bkingx> Yeah, mine did too, but I did a reboot and now the gdm won't even come up.
<bkingx> REALLY?
<bkingx> https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kentucky
<Koji-Murasame> bingo
<bkingx> ;)
<Zuph> Hmmm
<bkingx> You can use the links on that page to the other sites.
<Zuph> I guess I spoke too soon.
<Zuph> I can't connect via FTP to the site I set up :(
<bkingx> I assume you have FTP server set up?
<bkingx> How about ssh? can you ssh into the server?
<Zuph> I can get to the server
<Zuph> But I'm using a program called ISPConfig to manage the sites.
<bkingx> Im not familiar with that one.
<bkingx> From your problem, I assume it is FTP-based?
<Zuph> figured it out.
<Zuph> I forgot to forward port 21 from my router
<bkingx> Yeah?
<bkingx> I was going to get to that
<bkingx> I bet you could have FTP'd to the internal IP
<Zuph> Yeah
<bkingx> :( I can't get my Edgy load back
<Zuph> that isn't the point, though
<Koji-Murasame> bkingx - did you install Beryl with AIGLX or something else?
<zenwhen> http://www.zenwhen.com/?p=34 I wrote a ever so controversial blog post
<Zuph> HA! herodotus.zuph.com works!
<Koji-Murasame> Hmm. . . it seems to me that a lot of Linux users would like to see people move away from mp3s all together and use .ogg or .flac since those fall under the free software category. It may not be practical, but it's certainly an interesting thought.
<etank> i like ogg
*** ChanServ sets mode: +o etank
<Koji-Murasame> Eventually I'll get around to converting my library to .ogg, but for now .mp3 is a matter of convenience.
*** etank changes topic to "Welcome to the Ubuntu LoCo team for Kentucky. || Next meeting March 1st @ 8:00PM. || Check out the wiki page for the team at https://wiki.ubuntu/com/KentuckyTeam || Drop by the team forum at http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org || Go to https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kentucky if you would like to join the team."
<etank> topic links fixed
<Koji-Murasame> Thank you ^.^
<etank> np
<etank> zenwhen: i like the post you did
<srwalter> night guys
<zenwhen> thanks
<etank> sup venomous
<venomous> buenos nachos. STILL having irssi issues. giving me fits!
<etank> weird
<etank> have you tried non-torred
<venomous> i've tried just about everything i can think of. i've lost sight of the forest for the trees. must be something so stupidly obvious i'm overlooking it.
<etank> what is it doing or not doing?
<venomous> the upstair box irssi box is working tor'd, but the windows layout isn't. entering text actually doesn't! don't see any text entry at all! i've seen you say hey the few times i've connected with it, but can't respond.
<venomous> i'll send my conf file
<etank> k
<venomous> on the way.
<venomous> also trying to get ispconfig running. that's working, but i've never used it before...don't know how to create a site for the snort install
<Zuph> You and me both
<Zuph> Well, I have no idea what snort is
<Zuph> but ISPConfig is confusing my brain.
<etank> snort is an IDS
<etank> intrusion detection system
<Zuph> ah
<venomous> using ispconfig...i think you're supposed to create a site for snort...but haven't quite figured that out yet.
<Zuph> herodotus.zuph.com <-- I finally got that working.
<venomous> ispconfig works...snort work...but not together yet
<Zuph> Of course, that's really backwards and forwarded to my home cable modem
<Zuph> eventually when I get the server colocated, it will be hosting zuph.com
<venomous> Zuph, what did you do to create your first site with ispconfig
<Zuph> I created a client, then I created a site.
<Zuph> Then there was a tab under the site to create a user.
<Zuph> http://howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_ubuntu_6.06 I followed that guide to set the server up.
<venomous> i've seen that, but the instructions are a little less than intuitive
<venomous> me too...except i followed for 6.10
<Zuph> I just copied-pasted everything
<Zuph> and it all worked out.
<venomous> i can hit ispconfig on port 81, but was having difficulty with that first site..
<etank> jkeyes0: what is apani systems?
<jkeyes0> err... the company that makes the nortel contivity vpn client
<jkeyes0> a rep called me today, asking how I liked the trial software. I told him I couldn't run it because I'm on ubuntu, and he said "yeah, we don't support that".
<jkeyes0> there was a long, long silence, then he said "Thanks" and hung up on me. haha
<etank> that sucks
<etank> venomous: are you using irssi inside a screen session???
<jkeyes0> indeed it does. I'm going to start poking our nortel techs to see if they can help out.
<etank> that and do you have the nicklist plugin loaded
<venomous> nope...trying to eliminate complexities, before trying anything fancy
<etank> that is the problem then
<montgoej> oh yeah, was someone talking about a script or something that changes the background/usplash at the last meeting?
<montgoej> I've got one I've made, but I haven't completely tested it. I used some directions from Ubuntuforums.org and what I know to get it working...but I'm on my mom's Winblows machine...
<montgoej> silence...
<etank> i want to be able to change the usplash
<montgoej> to change usplash(from command line), 3 lines need to be run as root
<montgoej> cp -f "usplash-theme.so" "/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme.so"
<montgoej> ln -sf "/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme.so" "/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-artwork.so"
<montgoej> update-initramfs -u
<montgoej> that will change it, but the last line will take ~30-40 seconds
<montgoej> that is, assuming that the usplash file you wanna use is in the same folder as the script
<jkeyes0> k, so I give up on beryl/compiz/wobblystuff.
<montgoej> I did that a long time ago
<bonbonthejon> me too
<Koji-Murasame> I don't like the wobbly windows I prefer snapping.
<montgoej> I tried...for a while, it looked cool and al, but I couldn't make it work so I just gave up
<jkeyes0> well, it's a neat idea, my vid card just doesn't seem to like it. plus, I'm configured for dual-head, so it's not friendly to anything.
<etank> i tried beryl for a while but it got a little boring after a while
<Koji-Murasame> Yeah, it doesn't really have a lot of functionality to offer it's mainly just eye-candy
<jkeyes0> you know what they say... sex sells. the prettier it looks, the more chance I can sell my wife on it. :P
<Koji-Murasame> lol. Sadly it's true. And Windows got the same idea. . .
<jkeyes0> and thus... vista.
<jkeyes0> I was watching a video by Richard Stallman earlier, and he was talking all about the spyware built in to XP and the loss of freedom by upgrading to Vista. it was really inspiring.
<Koji-Murasame> Do you have a link?
<jkeyes0> http://punkcast.com/905/index.html
<Koji-Murasame> Thank you.
<jkeyes0> very long, very big video (1 hr long). I only made it through part. I'll finish it tomorrow. :P
*** queenofthe1ring_ is now known as queenofthe1ring
<srwalter> hi queen
<queenofthe1ring> hi srwalter
<bkingx> LOL...thought you were making fun of me!
<bkingx> Queen....King....
<srwalter> queen if my fiancee
<srwalter> *is
<queenofthe1ring> yep :-)
<srwalter> also an Ubuntu user
<queenofthe1ring> i loves ubuntu ;-)
<bkingx> Welcome queenofthe1ring!
<queenofthe1ring> why thank you
<bkingx> Have both of you signed up on the launchpad yet?
<srwalter> I have a launchpad account, but what do you mean by signed pu?
<bkingx> That's what I mean..launchpad account.
<srwalter> is there something I should do with my launchpad acct?
<bkingx> queenofthe1ring, you need to have a launchpad account too.
<bkingx> I think you just join our team.
<queenofthe1ring> ok, i will look into it
<bkingx> That kind of helps us keep track of how many members we have.
<srwalter> it says membership is pending now
<bkingx> Cool...Let me approve it.
<bkingx> Your in!
<bkingx> Now you can see your name on the Launchpad site.
<srwalter> sweet
<srwalter> well, I gotta head to work again
<bkingx> The next thing you can do, if you want, is create a Wiki page about yourself
<bkingx> Cool! Later srwalter
<srwalter> I'll see you at the meeting tonight
<bkingx> AWESOME! We;ll be there!
<bkingx> so queenofthe1ring, has srwalter been telling you about us?
<queenofthe1ring> yes
<bkingx> Cool! I hope you will join us in our projects.
<queenofthe1ring> i'll poke around on the site and see if there is something i can help with :-)
<bkingx> Oh..I;m sure we can find something for you to do!! LOL
<queenofthe1ring> there, now it says my request for joining the team is pending
<bkingx> OK...hang on a sec.
<bkingx> Awesome! Now you are in too!
<queenofthe1ring> cool, thanks
<bkingx> We are also working on a new webserver.
<bkingx> check http://64.191.174.220
<queenofthe1ring> will the meeting information always be posted there?
<bkingx> Yup! And we also have it on the Team Wiki page: https://wiki.ubuntu/com/KentuckyTeam
<bkingx> We are still working through some infancy issues, but we are well on our way to being a major player in KY.
<bkingx> And with the UKLUG association, we hope to strengthen that.
<bkingx> Are you a UK student too?
<queenofthe1ring> i will be in the fall. i am going to apply to their graduate program
<queenofthe1ring> i guess i should specify in math
<bkingx> Nice! We have a range of members...most are married with small children, early to mid 30's, and in some type of professional capacity.
<bkingx> But we have a few high schoolers and a few old-school folks too.
<queenofthe1ring> that is a pretty good cross-section then
<queenofthe1ring> i am trying to get my dad on ubuntu
<bkingx> We think so. And I think it will help in the public eye as we aren't a bunch of high-school gaming geeks.
<bkingx> That is awesome! What is his hangup for moving over?
<queenofthe1ring> he just doesn't have that much exposure to it. he acutally runs SuSe right now
<bkingx> Wow....I think he will LOVE Ubuntu then.
<bkingx> Which version are you pushing him to?
<queenofthe1ring> i gave him one of the live cd's. i think it is 6.06
<queenofthe1ring> he has used it a couple of times on his work computer and says that he likes it. he is required to keep windows on it though
<bkingx> Yeah...we have been stocking up on those. I think we have about 120 between our members. You can have Ubuntu send you a bunch from their ShipIT program.
<bkingx> Does Windows have to be his main OS?
<queenofthe1ring> he's not allowed to change the OS on his work computer at all, sadly.
<bkingx> Bummer!
<bkingx> Has he tried a program called VirtualBox? He can run a virtual OS within Windows.
<bkingx> I use it on my Windows work machine to test different OS's.
<bkingx> It actually works pretty nice, as long as he has enough RAM.
<bkingx> I wouldn't suggest it unless he has at least 512.
<queenofthe1ring> i will have to mention it to him
<bkingx> www.virtualbox.com
<bkingx> I think
<queenofthe1ring> haha, i'm not sure his work desktop has 512. it's pretty ancient
<queenofthe1ring> cool, thanks
<bkingx> Oh...and did I mention it is FREE?
<bkingx> Oops...it's http://www.virtualbox.org
<queenofthe1ring> free is always nice
<bkingx> You said it!
<bkingx> Ok...will we see you tonight then?
<bkingx> For the meeting?
<queenofthe1ring> yes, i might be a little late though
<bkingx> Great! And no prb. We usually run it until about 9:30 or so.
<bkingx> And you can always read up on the meetings from the wiki site.
<queenofthe1ring> sounds good
<bkingx> Great! It was nice meeting you!
<queenofthe1ring> thanks, nice to meet you too!
<bkingx> ;) Talk to you later then!
<queenofthe1ring> alright, bye for now
<Zuph> bah, I missed the talky talky
<bkingx> Bummer!
<bkingx> That's what you get for snoozing!
<Zuph> Man, I was doing actual work for once
<Zuph> Now I'm stuck doing more actual work instead of chatting.
<bkingx> LOL!
<bkingx> Sorry about your luck!
<bkingx> Man...I hosed my Edgy machine last night trying to load Beryl
<bkingx> I just don't know enought about how to recover from it, so I am blowing it away and rebuilding it.
<Zuph> Sounds like fun.
<Zuph> Overnight, my completely default wordpress install got so much spam I'm going to have to blow it away.
<bkingx> LOL....We had that happen with our Team Web server.
<bkingx> Are you using mod_Proxy?
<Zuph> nope.
<bkingx> OK...nm! LOL
<Zuph> People have evidently written scripts to spam wordpress blogs with comments.
<Zuph> So my database ballooned almost 100mb overnight from spam.
<bkingx> Ah...bastards!
<Zuph> yeah
<Zuph> etank, you around?
*** Moosebuntu_ is now known as JarG0n
<JarG0n> I haven't killed a ghost in years! :)
<JarG0n> felt good
<etank> Zuph: im back now
<Zuph> Still back?
<etank> yup
<Zuph> I may or may not be househunting again tonight
<Zuph> Unfortunately, one of my future roomies is only available to house hunt on Thurs/Fri/Sat, so we have to concentrate our visits there.
<etank> thats cool
<Zuph> Although it isn't helping that there's almost nothing available
<etank> move to lexington :)
<Zuph> Too long of a commute to school/work
<etank> that is why i dont work in the Ville
<Zuph> Well, I'm contractually obliged to continue working here for the next year.
<Zuph> And UK doesn't have as good a program as UofL and won't give me as much free money :)
<etank> oooh I hate it when that happens
<etank> Koji-Murasame: hows it going
<Koji-Murasame> Good. Yourself?
<etank> so so
<etank> I am SO ready to install Feisty on my main machine.
<etank> it rocks
<Koji-Murasame> What have they changed/added?
<etank> the look and feel of it is very nice
<etank> they have installed compriz by default but not enabled it
<Koji-Murasame> Cool
<Koji-Murasame> I think Xubuntu is getting XFCE 4.4 which has transparency available out of the box.
<Koji-Murasame> Not that I much care for transparency, but it is another feature worth mentioning
<etank> i think thats right
<Koji-Murasame> I just hope that the dist-upgrade has improved since last go 'round. . . I had a terrible time getting that to work and I'd rather it be easy. Not only for my own sanity, but for anyone who is new to Ubuntu and wants it to "just work".
<bonbonthejon> Koji-Murasame: you mean the upgrade dapper-->edgy?
<Koji-Murasame> Yeah
*** dig is now known as digitone
<digitone> hey
<bkingx> Compriz....is that like Beryl?
<Koji-Murasame> Beryl is a fork of Compiz
<bkingx> OH....I hosed my Edgy machine last night installing Beryl
<bkingx> Having to reload it now.
<Koji-Murasame> What kind of hardware are you running and how did you install it?
<bkingx> Running on a Sony Vaio NB, installed using this: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu_Edgy_with_XGL_and_ATI
<Koji-Murasame> Ah. Well, I used NVIDIA on my desktop and AIGLX on my laptop, so I guess I'm not much help. . .
<Koji-Murasame> It's pretty amazing though I never would have thought an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 would be able to handle it until I started read about it and it was listed under the AIGLX section.
<etank> i got beryl running on my Dell 5150 for a little while
<etank> it was cool but got kind of old after a while
<Koji-Murasame> Yeah, the most useful things for me are the window previews, the scale feature, and the desktop cube (which simply replaced my pager for four desktops).
<etank> I do like the cube
<etank> Koji-Murasame: have you joined the team yet? :D
<Koji-Murasame> I have joined the team.
<etank> so you have already gone to launchpad and all that
<etank> https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kentucky
<Koji-Murasame> Yup
<Koji-Murasame> I'm on the list as "Nick Eigel"
<etank> ok
<etank> I wasn't sure
<Koji-Murasame> Random question: Does anyone know of any free/open-source Tax software or any tax software made available to GNU/Linux?
<etank> I dont know of one that can be installed no
<Koji-Murasame> Yeah, that's the main thing, I think, that keeps my parents from letting me switch them over.
<Zuph> Koji-Murasame, there are none.
<etank> i think that there is a site that lets you do it online though
<Zuph> And since TurboTax et al. change every year, WINE usually doesn't work
<Koji-Murasame> Yeah.
<Zuph> Tax stuff and Games are the two reasons I still have a windows partition
<etank> taxes, games, photoshop
<etank> top 3 reasons people dont want to switch
<etank> Zuph: beat me to it
<Zuph> Although is tax stuff is your only hang up, install VMWare or something and set up a Windows Virtual machine to fire up every time you have to do taxes.
<Koji-Murasame> Yeah, my girlfriend is Photoshop. . .
<Zuph> Your girlfriend IS photoshop? That's rough, man. I think I'd prefer a girlfriend of flesh and blood.
<Koji-Murasame> lol
<Koji-Murasame> Her reason is photoshop. XP
<Koji-Murasame> Though I may convince her with the excellent support for Wacom tablets in Ubuntu.
<Zuph> No offense, but Gimp is nowhere near as full-featured or easy to use as Photoshop
<Zuph> Photoshop is a damn good reason to stay windows.
<Koji-Murasame> I haven't tooled around with VMware yet, and my plate is a little full to give it a go this tax season.
<Zuph> It's dead easy.
<Zuph> Seriously. It won't take you 15 minutes to install it and another 30 to have a working windows VM
<etank> you may want to look at virtualbox too. ( i feel like a sales person or something )
<etank> i like both vmware and virtualbox.
<etank> virtualbox seems a little more snappy to me though
<Zuph> VMWare is a little easier to setup, though.
<Zuph> At least in my playing around.
<etank> i think virtualbox has a .deb to install and then add your user to a vbox group
<Zuph> I didn't try that.
<Koji-Murasame> Hmm. . . so do I pay for VMWare after the eval. period?
<etank> vmware server is free
<Koji-Murasame> Ah. Okay. I was looking at workstation >.<
<etank> yeah the workstation isnt
<Zuph> VMWare Server is essentially the same as Workstation, just with a little less control over resource management.
<etank> here is the virtualbox link http://virtualbox.org/
<Zuph> Workstation is a great product if you're a developer for multiple platforms, though.
<etank> yeah but ESX rules them all
<bkingx> ESX does rock!
<etank> that with virtual center and you have a sweet set up
<etank> but it will make you have a bad case of anorexia of the wallet :(
<Zuph> Problem is ESX licenses are like $3k each
<Zuph> and Virtual Center Licenses were over $1000 last I checked.
<etank> yup
<etank> there is always Xen
<Zuph> which isn't nearly as easy to use or remotely administer
<etank> I agree
<Koji-Murasame> I'll have to give VMware a try on my desktop. My laptop is faster, but has a smaller harddrive. Plus I don't have any reason to install it other than to get used to using it.
<Koji-Murasame> How much slower is Windows on a virtual machine?
<Zuph> depends
<Zuph> If you're doing nothing else on the host machine, about 10% slower than a native install.
<Koji-Murasame> Alright. So gaming would probably be a problem?
<Zuph> A huge problem
<Zuph> VMWare doesn't support 3D acceleration.
<Zuph> They might soon, but not right now.
<Koji-Murasame> Ah. Alright.
<Koji-Murasame> Sorry for all the questions, but would a virtual machine installation be susceptible to the shortcomings of Windows (viruses/spyware, etc.)?
<Zuph> Yes and no.
<Zuph> It could easily get viruses, spyware, etc.
<Zuph> But you can take "snapshots" of your virtual machines. These are like save files for your VM, so if you screw something up, you can just restore to that point in time effortlessly.
<Koji-Murasame> Interesting.
<etank> venomous: can you type now?
<Zuph> oh god I am so leeet
<Koji-Murasame> ?
<dprice> testing
<dprice> obviously something wrong with my other config
<jkeyes0> afternoon, all
<Koji-Murasame> Hello
<jkeyes0> I've discovered a new timewaster I didn't realize existed this afternoon... Atomix
<jkeyes0> afternoon, montgoej
<montgoej> afternoon
<montgoej> we have a computer with Ubuntu on it at school now!
<montgoej> the STLP teacher finally let me do an install
<jkeyes0> awesome! convert those students. :)
<montgoej> I got my box of 30 cds in today too
<montgoej> we did have ~ 6 or so watching me install, seeing how I could be installing and using firefox at the same time, seeing how I was configuring it and how it was so easy to setup, etc.
<jkeyes0> well, if you can convert some, that would be awesome. what age range?
<jkeyes0> when did you order your cd's?
<montgoej> 2 meetings before the last one I think
<montgoej> lemme check
<montgoej> 30 CDs requested in 2007-02-08. 30 CDs approved and sent to the shipping company in 2007-02-12. Please note requests usually take from 4 to 6 weeks to deliver, depending on the country of shipping.
<montgoej> directly from shipit.com
<montgoej> *shipit.ubuntu.com
<jkeyes0> 0 CDs requested in 2007-02-09. This request was not approved, so no CDs were shipped. :(
<jkeyes0> err, that was 30, not 0
<montgoej> ah
<montgoej> I see
<montgoej> what did you put as your reason
<jkeyes0> I believe something like "Distribution for Kentucky LoCo team"
<montgoej> I put "30 cds for Ubuntu-Kentucky LoCo team, I am Montgoej on said team"
