<phlasphy> anybody know much about grub here?
<Jester45> how do you get 3ddektop to work
<Jester45> or will xfce work with it?
<phlasphy> i got a new GFX card yesterday
<phlasphy> Jester45: i have no idea sorry
<Jester45> phlasphy: cool what kind
<phlasphy> umm albatron trinity or something
<phlasphy> geforce 6200
<phlasphy> 256MB/64bit
<Jester45> coo
<Jester45> l
<phlasphy> i hope it is compatabile with linux
<Jester45> it should be
<phlasphy> :)
<Jester45> its nvidia
<Jester45> allmost all card are compatablie
<Jester45> but some have a better driver
<phlasphy> i thought it was albatron
<phlasphy> not nvidia
<Jester45> u\humm
<Jester45> geforce right?
<Jester45> then its vnidia
<phlasphy> ok
<phlasphy> is nvidia good
<Jester45> yes
<Jester45> its has a good driver
<phlasphy> ok
<Jester45> what was your old card
<phlasphy> umm sis on board
<Jester45> umm
<phlasphy> 16MB i think
<Jester45> well your xserver might be messed up
<Jester45> no the brand
<Jester45> ati nvdia etc
<phlasphy> sis
<Jester45> are you on linux now?
<phlasphy> no
<Jester45> darn
<phlasphy> i am not even on the pc with new GFX
<Jester45> o
<Jester45> you are probly going to have to reconfigure your xorg.conf
<phlasphy> the pc with new GFX is installing arch
<Jester45> or boot toa live cd and copy that xorg.conf
<phlasphy> i dont particulary like xubuntu
<Jester45> why
<phlasphy> i dont know
<phlasphy> i dont know anything about linux
<phlasphy> and i prefer arch
<phlasphy> lol
<phlasphy> i am weird
<Iphigenia> Hi! Dumb question (again!): what is the terminal comand to see what version ubuntu I am using? As well is there an online list somewhere of terminal commands I can consult?
<elijah> could someone help me please?
<phlasphy> Jester45: although all the trouble i am having installing it
<phlasphy> elijah: what with?
<elijah> i want to install xubuntu 6.10 permanently on my pc, so i downloaded the dapper alternate cd
<elijah> did i get the right cd?
<phlasphy> umm isnt 6.10 edgy
<elijah> im not sure, its just i downloaded the alternate cd, is that the right one?
<phlasphy> i will check
<phlasphy> umm yeah you got 6.06
<elijah> yuh its edgy eft
<elijah> right i got edgy
<phlasphy> 6.06 is dapper
<elijah> yuh its 6.10 taht i got
<phlasphy> yeah you got edgy
<elijah> i downloaded the alternate cd, is that the that i should use for permanent installation?
<phlasphy> well i spose so
<phlasphy> are you new to linux
<phlasphy> ?
<elijah> but the pc cannot boot on the cd that i burned
<elijah> yuh
<phlasphy> if you are new to linux i would reccomend the live cd
<cellofellow> definetly
<phlasphy> and as for the pc not booting the alternative
<phlasphy> alternate
<cellofellow> that's odd. Thy both use the isolinux livecd bootloader.
<phlasphy> how did you download it
<cellofellow> Live shouldn't do any better.
* cellofellow shuts up now
<phlasphy> cellofellow: why you shuttup you know more then me
<elijah> from the mirror
<phlasphy> elijah: did you check the m5 thing
<Jester45> drapper is 6.06 edgy is 6.10 fiesty is 7.07
<elijah> what's that?
<cellofellow> cause you know more abou the issue.
<cellofellow> Jester45: when did they move the release date?
<cellofellow> for Feisty?
<cellofellow> to July?
<phlasphy> cellofellow: well his pc wont boot the cd
<Jester45> i think april
<cellofellow> does it boot other CDs?
<elijah> yuh
<phlasphy> bad burn me thinks
<cellofellow> Jester45: then it's 7.04 :)
<Jester45> elijah: did you change the boot order? try dissconecting the hardrives
<phlasphy> or bad download
<elijah> yuh
<cellofellow> elijah: will it boot on other boxes?
<Jester45> cellofellow: its 7.07
<elijah> i tried that too
<phlasphy> torrents seem to be the safest way to get ISO's
<cellofellow> Jester45: 7.07 would be July. It's 7.04 and April.
<elijah> no
<phlasphy> it checks for hash fails
<Jester45> cellofellow: allways been that
<Jester45> phlasphy: md5sum?? that also checks
<elijah> should i burn it as a bootable with ms-dos things?
<elijah> start-up i mean
<Jester45> anyone know how to combine or burn multi mpgs into a dvd
<cellofellow> just burn it as an ISO.
<elijah> ok
<Jester45> they are same res/fps
<cellofellow> that's DVD authoring, which I've never done before.
<phlasphy> cellofellow: some programs dont extract it
<Jester45> cellofellow: no as dvd video
<elijah> so what's with md5sum.txt
<elijah> what should i do with that?
<Jester45> elijah: thats how you check if the dl was good or not
<cellofellow> run md5sum thefile.iso and see if it matches the file md5sum.txt
<Jester45> if your md5 check is the same as the one in the .txt then your good to go
<elijah> oh ok
<elijah> i'll check
<elijah> thanks guys
<mark489> for anyone one windows you can get md5sum checkers at tucows.com
<mark489> oops "on" windows
<cellofellow> well, ok. thanks mark
<phlasphy> ohh noes my HDD is srewed i think
<cellofellow> phlasphy: what do you mean some programs don't extract the ISO file?
<cellofellow> :(
<phlasphy> well i burnt a linux iso to a cd once and it stayed as a iso
<phlasphy> did not extract it
<cellofellow> elijah: if you're burning with Windows XP, ISOrecorder is an excellent ISO burner.
<cellofellow> phlasphy: so it burnt as an image instead of a file.
<cellofellow> stupid program.
<phlasphy> i guess
<Jester45> w00t gui for dvd author
<cellofellow> Jester45: what program?
<Jester45> qdvdauthor
<Jester45> i seen it online
<cellofellow> q? as in qt?
<Jester45> so i apted it
<Jester45> mes thinks sos
* cellofellow will use qt but doesn't like it (in xfce. love it in KDE).
* Jester45 should get his new ram for new computer in the next few days
<phlasphy> shit
<cellofellow> must be bad to violate the !language rule.
<phlasphy> oops
<phlasphy> my HDD broke
<Jester45> crap
<cellofellow> :(
<Jester45> :)
<phlasphy> :(
<Jester45> :0
<phlasphy> :(
<phlasphy> :C
<phlasphy> B(
<phlasphy> B-(
<cellofellow> How broke?
<phlasphy> well
<phlasphy> error creating filesystem: mke2fs -j /dev/hda2
<cellofellow> mkfs.ext3 maybe?
<Jester45> doesnt mean its broke
<phlasphy> ok :)
<pieman> so, how is xubuntu? what does it come thats different besides ubuntu with gnome?
<arle> hello
<arle> I am running the live Hoary CD
<arle> and downloaded Xubuntu alternate CD
<arle> but can't upgrade my sistem :-\

<adamwest> GUYS i'm installing xubuntu and it's removing my kde applications D:
<psykidellic> hi...i a trying to do text mode installation of Xubuntu 6.06.1 and everything goes off well while installing sofwtare and all and then it just stops at the stage - "installing the grub package" and it stops there at 0%...so i am not able to boot my machine? what might be the problem?
<goatmale> I have a problem... whenever I try to boot up the install for xubuntu it gets to the splash screen and then it goes to black
<goatmale> and then nothing
<psykidellic> goatmale: is yoru display showing something?
<psykidellic> goatmale: or me it was like the LCD was getting some analog signal from my card which it was not able to understand
<psykidellic> so i had to install in text mode
<goatmale> it shows the install options
<goatmale> then it shows the little mouse running
<goatmale> that splash
<goatmale> and then BAM
<goatmale> nothing
<psykidellic> hmm strange....
<psykidellic> try a text only install
<psykidellic> does that work?
<goatmale> alt f2?
<psykidellic> oh.....shit...u must be doing normal install..when you do an install from alternate cd installer...it has an option to install a text mode OS only
<psykidellic> i am using that....
<goatmale> another iso :(
<psykidellic> even i am having problems installing ubuntu on my machine
<psykidellic> i wasted 3 days to install 6.1 and it was no way detecting my NIC card
<goatmale> yeah
<goatmale> ndiswrapper
<psykidellic> now i am trying 6.06.1 and it hangs at intsalling GRUB stage
<psykidellic> i dont know what is the problem...ndiswrapper didnt work....
<psykidellic> i tried everything other tehn compiling the kernel with the driver!
<goatmale> strange
<goatmale> anything to get away from windows
<psykidellic> well......how much we blast windows.....its device driver support
<psykidellic> is unparallel..to test that all my cards are working i installed XP and it recognised each and every device

<Sergo> how
<Sergo> in kubuntu i know how
<Sergo> but in xubuntu don't know
<Sergo> i'm a linux newbie
<Sergo> :)
<adamwest> guys is there a way to configure the login screen from xfce? it hangs whenever i logout and if i restart it's this weird login instead of the normal one
<somerville32> Applications > System > Login Screen
<adamwest> it doesnt work :\
<adamwest> i mean it wont open
<adamwest> won't even think D: as if i clicked on midair
<adamwest> ?
<somerville32> Interesting.
<adamwest> ... thanks? :)
<adamwest> i dont wanna log in and out because ill have to restart D:
<somerville32> Press alt+f2 and type in "gdmsetup"
<somerville32> and then click "Run in terminal" and click ok
<adamwest> umm it just said "failed to connect to socket" couple of times and closed itself
<somerville32> What version of Xubuntu are you running?
<adamwest> just installed. 6.10.
<adamwest> i mean, i had ubuntu, then wanted to try kde so i aptituded kubuntu-desktop, then same with xfce
* somerville32 nods.
<somerville32> Did this issue start to occur after installing Xubuntu?
<adamwest> i think so. probably because it uninstalled kde without asking me :|
<somerville32> It shouldn't have done that.
<adamwest> it didnt uninstall it completely though
<adamwest> i simply did aptitude update && aptitude install xubuntu-desktop
<somerville32> Try running: apt-get install xubuntu-desktop kubuntu-desktop
<adamwest> and it started downloading stuff
<somerville32> As super user (aka, append sudo)
<somerville32> Err..
<adamwest> but then i saw "removing kubuntu ----"

<somerville32> I would run it from the Terminal
<somerville32> But you can also use synaptics if you prefer
<adamwest> no i meant in the terminal, but while running xubuntu.
<adamwest> btw u meant i should install both xubuntu and kubuntu over?
<somerville32> It won't install it over
<somerville32> It'll just make sure they're both installed
<adamwest> ah okay
<somerville32> Do you know how to start the Terminal in Xubuntu?
<adamwest> you mean in accessories->terminal?
<adamwest> isn't it better to reinstall xubuntu outside it? :-\
<somerville32> No no

<adamwest> sorry wasnt here

<adamwest> because i tried to uninstall it on another machine and it wasn't removed completely
<Sergo_> hello
<cellofellow> hi
<cellofellow> anything interesting happening?
* adamwest is sleeping
<Sergo_> how to access the local area computer ?
<Sergo_> like in windows.. \\compname
<cellofellow> how to access local area computer? like a computer on the LAN?
<Sergo_> run prgram
<Sergo_> yes
<cellofellow> oh, Windows Networking
<Sergo_> computer is on lan
<adamwest> shm or smtng, no?
<Sergo_> in xubuntu i don't know
<cellofellow> open a terminal and type sudo apt-get install linneighborhood
<adamwest> what will that install cellofellow?
<cellofellow> adamwest: a program to mount Windows shares.
<cellofellow> smb
<adamwest> so without that i can't be in a network with windows?
<cellofellow> it's just how you access Windows SMB shares.
<cellofellow> you can be on the same TCP/IP network.
<adamwest> somerville --- it finished installing ...
<Sergo_> if this will not work , is there anoter way
<cellofellow> this will work. :)
<somerville32> adamwest, Can you copy and paste the output?
* cellofellow knows how
<cellofellow> Sergo_: technically this is the "another way"
<Sergo_> :)
<adamwest> somerville32 the whole output of the whole installation?
<somerville32> !pastebin | adamwest

* adamwest is going to work on that
<cellofellow> once it's installed, keep that terminal open. Is it installed?
<adamwest> somerville32 the whole output exceeded the terminal
<Sergo_> k,thanks ill try apt-get install linneighborhood
<somerville32> Ok
<Sergo_> later
<somerville32> Then we can assume it worked
<somerville32> lol
<cellofellow> later?
<adamwest> lol]
<cellofellow> you not on Xubuntu at the moment?
<adamwest> so what now somerville32?
<Sergo_> nt
<Sergo_> nope
<Sergo_> i want to
<Sergo_> save my information on local area computer
<Sergo_> before install xubuntu
<cellofellow> Sergo_: then here's the rest. in a terminal type sudo chmod +s /usr/bin/smbmnt && sudo chmod +s /usr/bin/smbumount. Now run LinNeighborhood, click the Add button. Type the name of the desired machine in to the box, and then Query. It should fill in the rest. Then in the main window double click the machine, and double click a share to mount it in /home/yourname/mnt/MACHINE/SHARE
<cellofellow> copy and paste that down somewhere.

<adamwest> somerville32 ok ill logout now. if i'm not back too soon, then it didnt work ^_^
<adamwest> brb
<Sergo_> cellofellow if i don't know to of local machine, can i use ip?
<cellofellow> yes, IP works too. It has box for IP and SMB Name.
<Sergo_> if i don't know the name
<cellofellow> you have to have IP, Name, and Group. It will take one of IP or Name and fill in the rest when you click Query.
<cellofellow> also, in the preferences, set it to run thunar instead of mc when you mount something.
<Sergo_> it's so hard
<cellofellow> nah, you'll get used to it. the sudo chmod stuff is a one-time thing too.
<cellofellow> and it remembers favorite machines.
<Sergo> sorry, is there another way to access local ip
<cellofellow> access can mean lots of things. SSH HTTP SMB FTP. What exactly are you thinking of?
<Sergo> the share
<Sergo> computer
<Sergo> not HTTP , ftp or ssh
<cellofellow> You want me to walk you through it? It really ins't that bad. If you've ever used Puppy this is the program included.
<cellofellow> so Windows SMB.
<Sergo> Puppy
<cellofellow> Trust me, this is the easiest way of getting it working in Xubuntu. Gnome and KDE have SMB built in to the file managers. Thunar doesn't do that yet.
<Sergo> for what this program is?
<cellofellow> for what this program is? clarify that didn't make any sense.
<cellofellow> have you installed linneighborhood?
<cellofellow> !linneighborhood

<cellofellow> select files, like in Thunar?
<Sergo> maybe in another places it's work
<cellofellow> left click doesn't work?
<cellofellow> the GTK File dialog you mean?
<Sergo> nope, it do nothing
<adamwest> i'm back

<cellofellow> left click doesn't work at all, or only in some specific program?

<adamwest> i installed xubuntu and kubuntu like u said but it still didn't logout at all... kubuntu now works AND it can logout but xubuntu can't...
<cellofellow> you spun me around and around. None of your questions or answers to questions made sense.
<cellofellow> adamwest: are you using KDM or GDM? I find GDM works better.
<adamwest> so i thought it had something to do with the fact that i tried to install it while using it, but when i installed it from the KDE instead of XFCE itself it said it was already installed...
<adamwest> i think so to, cellofellow.. but i want to try xfce for now, but it won't logout.
<Sergo> cellofellow sorry
<cellofellow> adamwest: do you see Xubuntu or Ubuntu at the login screen, or Kubuntu?
<adamwest> kubuntu
<cellofellow> open a terminal, and type sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm, and select gdm when it asks about default display manager.
<Sergo> cellofellow, can i play mp3 music in xubuntu?
<adamwest> now that i think about it when i installed xubuntu it didnt show me that console screen where i choose the GDM or KDM etc
<cellofellow> Sergo: yes. Some programs need extra libraries, some don't. XMMS doesn't, and it's a simple media player reminisent of WinAmp.
<cellofellow> I use Exaile, which is GStreamer based and needed lots of extra libs to play MP3.

<Sergo> will this work in run program line (alt+f2) smb://comp/
<cellofellow> no
<Sergo> bad..
<adamwest> last.fm's like pandora.com but with money D:
<Sergo> :)
<adamwest> but unlike pandora.com it allows you to send tracks you hear and is much more community based.
<cellofellow> thunar doesn't use protocols, it's file only.
<cellofellow> lost me at pandora.com
<adamwest> !pandora
<ubotu> pandora: GIMP Plugin For Creating Panoramas. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.7.1-0ubuntu1 (edgy), package size 13 kB, installed size 80 kB
<cellofellow> lol
<adamwest> lol not that
<adamwest> !pandora.com
<ubotu> Sorry, I don't know anything about pandora.com - try searching on http://bots.ubuntulinux.nl/factoids.cgi
<adamwest> blahj
<cellofellow> what's it FOR? Is it an internet radio system?
<Sergo> cellofellow sorrry, can i give me once again the soft name to access computers from local area
<adamwest> it's this site where you input your favorite music artists and bands and you get your own radio station with songs
<adamwest> that match your style
<cellofellow> Sergo: by soft name do you mean the program I said to use?
<Sergo> yes
<adamwest> cellofellow --- what about my problem :P
<adamwest> or somerville32
<cellofellow> adamwest: dunno, kinda missed what your problem was.
<cellofellow> Sergo: linneighborhood
<somerville32> adamwest: Are you using gdm or kdm?
<adamwest> http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/2722/ --> is this a normal output after "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm"
* somerville32 looks.
<cellofellow> oh, yeah, that's right.
<cellofellow> missed the details though.
<somerville32> No, that isn't correct.
<adamwest> what details.. that's all it gave.
<cellofellow> not that. lol
<cellofellow> what your problem in the first place was.
<somerville32> adamwest: press alt+f2
* adamwest tries to refine it properly
<cellofellow> I know what he needs to do.
<adamwest> lol alt-f2 doesnt work for my kde :P
<adamwest> continue somerville32
<somerville32> then type: gksuo echo /usr/sbin/gdm > /etc/X11/default-display-manager
<cellofellow> type ctrl+alt+f1, and run sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop && sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop && sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
* adamwest explaining while reading what somerville32 writes ---> my problem was, cellofellow, that i couldn't log out of xubuntu - only from kubuntu.
<cellofellow> after you do what cody says.
<cellofellow> odd
<adamwest> it can't do the command, somerville32.
<cellofellow> gksu not gksuo
<somerville32> *gksudo
<adamwest> ah thought so
<cellofellow> or in a terminal just with sudo at the start
<adamwest> umm is something supposed to happen?
<somerville32> No
<cellofellow> (terminal much better than run dialog for this job.)
<adamwest> ...
<cellofellow> if you use the run dialog, you won't see error messages or anything even if they are there.
<cellofellow> try again in terminal with sudo not gksu
<somerville32> There isn't a need
<cellofellow> fine
<adamwest> no it was ok, when in terminal it told me permission denied but then i added gksudo after the arrow thing and it worked.
<cellofellow> adamwest: now do all the crazy init stuff in the normal console environment.
<somerville32> adamwest: Can you paste the output of: cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager
<cellofellow> you have to add sudo to the >
<cellofellow> ?
<adamwest> ... seems so.
<somerville32> cellofellow: It is confusing when two people are trying to help one person at the same time.
<adamwest> somerville32 --> /usr/sbin/gdm
<cellofellow> that makes sense. do sudo bash to get a root shell and then do it without sudo next time.
<cellofellow> somerville32: so I should shut up?
* adamwest laughs
<adamwest> ok so what's next guys
<cellofellow> ok, if you drop to the console and kill kdm with /etc/init.d/kdm stop and then start gdm with /etc/init.d/gdm start, you should get X restarting and GDM greeting you.
<adamwest> .. i should?
<cellofellow> somerville32: good idea?
<cellofellow> I'd do it in all one command: sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop && sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start && exit
<somerville32> adamwest: If it doesn't work, just reboot
<adamwest> kk,
<cellofellow> not in a terminal, in a true console. ctrl+alt+f1
<adamwest> i'll see you on the other side, cheers
<cellofellow> speaking of true consoles, how do I set the VGA setting so that I can have more lines and rows in a virtual terminal?
<cellofellow> Is there a kernel option for grub for the VGA?
<cellofellow> on of those three number vga codes that start with 7, you know.
<PuMpErNiCkLe> Yeah, the 'vga' option.
<cellofellow> vga=792 or whatever it is for 1280x1024x32
<cellofellow> ?
<PuMpErNiCkLe> yup
<cellofellow> how do I find those codes?
<PuMpErNiCkLe> Use vga = ask the first time, and just keep whichever one you choose.
<cellofellow> g'night
<adamwest> i'm back
<adamwest> it fixed stuff, but not waht i wanted it to fix :P
<adamwest> ... guys
* adamwest 's waiting.
<PuMpErNiCkLe> What's the problem?
<adamwest> when i try to log out of xubuntu, the system hangs with the wallpaper :\
<adamwest> i mean i click "sign out" and it just quits the panels but won't proceed to logout
<adamwest> ../
<adamwest> *?
<elijah> what's the difference between desktop cd & alternate cd?
<somerville32> elijah, Desktop cd is a live cd + gui installed and alternate cd is a text-based installer
<adamwest> are you sure?
<somerville32> *installer
<somerville32> Both install a gui by default
<adamwest> when i tried to upgrade to ubuntu 6.10 from .06 it said i could use an alternate cd if i have one and i wont need to download
<elijah> so if i want to install it permanently on my PC which should i get?
<PuMpErNiCkLe> adamwest: Are you using an ati card?
<adamwest> desktop i think
<somerville32> elijah, Either
<adamwest> no i dont use ati
<somerville32> elijah, Use the alternative CD if you have less then 192mb of ram
<elijah> ok, but if i have a higher RAM?
<elijah> ok, so you mean i could also use the desktop cd as a permanent installer or it's just a live cd?
* somerville32 nods.
<cellofellow> hey hey, cool. Setting the vga setting in the kernel makes the framebuffer work now. Now I have x-less MPlayer working.
<adamwest> somerville32: can you spare me a moment once more?
<somerville32> adamwest, Sure.
<cellofellow> well, ok. Now I'm REALLY going to bed
<elijah> hey somerville32, could i use the desktop cd for permanent installation?
<somerville32> Yes.
<somerville32> :)
<adamwest> elijah: the cd will be a live cd and it has an installation shortcut on the desktop if you dont want to use the cd anymore
<elijah> can i also boot on that live cd?
<adamwest> yes
<adamwest> if you keep it in there and choose to boot from it, yes.
<elijah> thanks
<adamwest> np
<adamwest> so somerville32, i did the kde stop and start and exit before and it fixed the login screen to be xubuntu instead of kubuntu.. but i still can't log out of xubuntu :P
<elijah> i'll try that
<elijah> thanks guys
<elijah> i love ya'all....:)
<somerville32> elijah, np. We love you too :)
* adamwest smiles
<elijah> he he
<adamwest> somerville32: what about my problem then :P
<adamwest> should i uninstall and reinstall xubuntu from kde or smtng? :-\
<somerville32> adamwest, Do you think you could download the ISO and install from scratch?
<adamwest> somerville32: i don't want to :P i downloaded ubuntu 6.10 and because they removed stuff from the dapper version in the new version i couldn't use my modem... had to install dapper and then wait hours for the internet update to complete :\
<adamwest> *to get to 6.10
<adamwest> besides i already started ubuntu from scratch.... three times in one week - the first week i used linux D:
<adamwest> the current week :P
<somerville32> lol
<somerville32> Oh, fun
* adamwest remembers the pain.... oh yes he does
* somerville32 is sorry to hear you're having so much trouble.
* adamwest is planning to stay with linux even with all the mess
* somerville32 loves Linux.
* adamwest hates microsoft
<somerville32> hehe
<adamwest> OK back to my problem? :P
<adamwest> i'm afraid to reinstall xubuntu because when i installed xubuntu for the first time it removed kubuntu without asking me
<adamwest> *last time i instealled xubuntu
<adamwest> *installed
* adamwest annoyed with his grammer
* adamwest spelling!!!
<somerville32> I've installed xubuntu, ubuntu, and kubuntu desktop and it worked fine for me
<somerville32> I think it is because you used aptitude
* adamwest raises an eyebtow
* adamwest eyebrow
<adamwest> what's wrong with that?
<somerville32> No idea
<adamwest> lol
<somerville32> It is just the only difference that I can tell
<adamwest> so how do i COMPLETELY REMOVE xubuntu and then PROPERLY INSTALL it again
<adamwest> D:
<somerville32> lol
<somerville32> You can use aptitude to do that
<somerville32> (to completely remove it)
<adamwest> :D
<adamwest> tell me i dont wanna make aweful mistakes again
<somerville32> lol
<somerville32> I've never doen it
<somerville32> *done
* adamwest is still a little newb
<somerville32> It's ok adamwest :)
* adamwest is happy though... his 19th birthday is in a week or so ^_^
<mauterin> when will xfce 4.4.0 install with aptitude install xubuntu-desktop?
<somerville32> mauterin, I'm not sure I understand the question.
<adamwest> so somerville32 how am i supposed to install it after i remove it? --> sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop ?
<mauterin> sorry, trying to install xfce 4.4.0, not sure how...
<somerville32> Thats what I did
<somerville32> mauterin, You'll get 4.4.0 when you upgrade to Xubuntu 7.04 in April
<mauterin> thanks. will it be on next update of feisty?
* adamwest recommends bookmarking this --> http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce <-- website
* adamwest is pissed because once again xubuntu installation/uninstallation is removing stuff without asking him... this time it's the gnome ubuntu!
<somerville32> 0_o
<adamwest> omg
<adamwest> now the login is gone
<adamwest> and i can't use the login screen AT ALL
* somerville32 fails to understand why adamwest experiences these issues while no one else has. : (
* adamwest fails to understand as well
<adamwest> how can i set the kubuntu login again?
<adamwest> :\
<somerville32> I think re-installing from the CD would save you a lot of hassle.
<adamwest> but i CANT D: ill have to wait about 10 hours for the upgrade download to complete
<adamwest> please, what is the command to set the login screen with GDM or KDM? the console thing
<somerville32> sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
<adamwest> thanks
<adamwest> it says Reloading K Display Manager configuration...kdm not running
<somerville32> Right
<adamwest> ... how come
<somerville32> Because kdm isn't running :)
<adamwest> i need to configure it so it will be the default login D:
<adamwest> ... yes it is. i'm under kde
<somerville32> No
<somerville32> Just because you are running kde, doesn't mean kdm is running
<adamwest> ...
<adamwest> so how can i fix all this mess D: WITHOUT reinstalling from the cd
<somerville32> Thats a tough question
* adamwest wonders why oh why is it so hard to not use bloody microsoft software
* somerville32 doesn't have any problems.
* adamwest fixes - hard not to use
<adamwest> so how come i have them D: i'm just a newb following instructions
<adamwest> ...
<adamwest> ive been struggling with myself to return to windows or not D: i dont believe im saying that, i have windows
<somerville32> I'm really not sure
<somerville32> You could always install Edgy from CD
<adamwest> * hate windows
<adamwest> i have edgy cd
<somerville32> ...
<somerville32> Ok
<adamwest> i tried to install from it but it never works
<somerville32> Whats the problem?
<adamwest> when i try to boot into it
<adamwest> it spits these errors about i/o and stuff
<somerville32> Sounds like a bad CD then
<adamwest> and when it finishes and it boots up, and i finally install the damn thing,
<adamwest> my ADSL ALE130 modem linux drivers needs endless packages that 6.10 doesnt have
<adamwest> but 6.06 does.
<somerville32> What are these packages?
<adamwest> have no idea
<adamwest> at first it was tk and tcl or something
<adamwest> so i installed them
<adamwest> but then it said it needs more to use THOSE things
<adamwest> so i installed more
<adamwest> and after that it didn't even work
<adamwest> and i can't do anything because i dont have an internet connection while i'm doing that because THE MODEM IS THE VERY THING I'M TRYING TO INSTALL THAT WAY D:
<somerville32> hehe
<somerville32> Maybe file a bug?
<adamwest> I DONT HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION TO FILE A BUG THAT WAY :P
<adamwest> damn it all ill just do apt-get install xubuntu-desktop and end with it
<adamwest> afk
* adamwest is going to gather leaves in his back yard and think this whole thing through
<Iphigenia> OK stupid question: does an ADSL modem normally need a driver?
<Iphigenia> I thought normally it has an network address that needs to be accessed?
<somerville32> Iphigenia, I guess some do.
<somerville32> I know mine doesn't
<Iphigenia> somerville: My previous ADSL was a Dink 502T which workrd poorly with Xubuntu. Bought a Sppedtouch 585 and all is well
<Iphigenia> D-Link
* adamwest is back and is going to try the login screen again, after installing the xubuntu desktop.
*** totalwor1age is now known as totalwormage
* adamwest is out in the streets telling everyone his login now works
<adamwest> ... my login works now ^_^
<totalwormage> !
<totalwormage> :D
<totalwormage> what a good news
<adamwest> well [if somerville32's there he might like to know :) ] ill now try logging on to xubuntu and out of it. if it works, then i'm done with experimenting with environments! :P
<adamwest> bbs
<totalwormage> grin
* adamwest gone to test his reinstalled xubuntu
<grazie> !kernel
<ubotu> kernel is the core of the Ubuntu Operating System (named 'Linux') - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel. You shouldn't have to compile one, but if you're convinced you do, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelCustomBuild
* adamwest HAD ENOUGH
<adamwest> i dont know what to do anymore D:
* adamwest wonders where is everyone
<Iphigenia> adamwest: Only me here perhaps but I would be of little help to you
<Iphigenia> My own xubuntu system is ticking away like a very expensive swiss watch :-)
* TheSheep installs new xfce from the repos
<adamwest> great then... i could really use help.
<adamwest> Iphigenia: i'll tell you the story
<adamwest> i had ubuntu dapper
<adamwest> was forced to install dapper and update for hours, because my edgy cd didnt contain packages that my ADSL modem's driver needs and i had many problems installing that under edgy. dont ask.
* adamwest remembers how he reinstalled edgy that way for three times this week
<adamwest> so after i had ubuntu 6.10
<adamwest> i wanted to try kubuntu. i tried for a day. didn't like it so much.
<adamwest> so i went to xubuntu.
<adamwest> i installed it and i think it's cool
<adamwest> however........
<adamwest> it won't log out.
<adamwest> ! hence my problm.
<ubotu> Sorry, I don't know anything about hence my problm. - try searching on http://bots.ubuntulinux.nl/factoids.cgi
<adamwest> problem
<adamwest> so i tried uninstalling xubuntu and reinstalling it
<adamwest> didn't work
<adamwest> and it uninstalled the original ubuntu with it as well so i'm stuck with kubuntu
<Iphigenia> adamwest:hence some frustration
<TheSheep> adamwest: just install ubuntu-desktop and you'll have ubuntu back
<TheSheep> adamwest: what do you mean by "I can't log out"?
<adamwest> when i click the "sign off" thing in xubuntu, the system simply hangs.
<adamwest> nothing responds.
<TheSheep> adamwest: where do you click it?
<TheSheep> adamwest: I mean, what do you exactly do?
<adamwest> what is there to do? i click the right-top edge button and select "sign off", or log off can't remember
<adamwest> and the desktop dissapears
<adamwest> all i'm left with is the wallpaper
<adamwest> and the system won't go further than that.
<TheSheep> adamwest: are you sure it hungs? it takes a little while to bring down all services...
<adamwest> is it supposed to take longer than kde?
<adamwest> a -lot- longer?
<TheSheep> adamwest: no, the desktop environment used has (should have) no impact on it
<adamwest> let's just say i waited about two minutes. for me that's plenty.
<TheSheep> adamwest: do you have HAL installed and working?
<adamwest> what's hal
<TheSheep> a daemon
<TheSheep> just type 'ps auxwww | grep hal' and see if it shows something
<adamwest> hmm
* adamwest trying
<adamwest> it says a lot
<TheSheep> ok
<TheSheep> adamwest: can you press ctrl+alt+f2 when the system is hanging to switch to a text terminal?
<TheSheep> adamwest: try to log in and see if hal is still running
* adamwest doesnt get how come he keeps having problems with linux every time he uses it
<TheSheep> adamwest: some hardware is linux-unfriendly
<adamwest> no i cant switch kernals and stuff with ctrl-alt-X
<adamwest> my hardware is not that new or complicated
<TheSheep> it's not complexity, it's not following the standards
<TheSheep> you also might be just unlucky ;)]
<adamwest> damn
<TheSheep> adamwest: does pressing alt+ctrl+backspace bring you to the login screen?
<adamwest> i really dont know what to do anymore
<adamwest> no, nothing responds
<adamwest> even the numlock/capslock won't respond
<adamwest> the system is STUCK
<TheSheep> but before you try to log out?
<adamwest> what do you mean
<TheSheep> adamwest: I want you to check if after killing X the gdm will come up
<TheSheep> adamwest: to make sure it's X that's hanging, not the gdm
<adamwest> how do i do that
<TheSheep> alt+ctrl+backspace kills X
<TheSheep> log in into xfce and then kill it
<adamwest> hmm ok ill give it a shot
* adamwest gone to check that
<guigz> hello
<guigz> I have a problem...I updated Xubuntu Edgy and now I cannot access the system/network applet. It keeps telling me I do not have access rights..
<TheSheep> guigz: known buyou can either run it from terminal with 'sudo netwrok-admin' or I can tell you how to 'fix' the menu entry
<TheSheep> known bug
<TheSheep> netwrok-admin
<TheSheep> sorry for typos
<TheSheep> network-admin
<guigz> I'd like to fix the menu entry
<TheSheep> grrr
<TheSheep> ok
<TheSheep> open terminal
<guigz> thanks a lot!
<TheSheep> type 'sudo mousepad /usr/share/applications/network.desktop'
<TheSheep> an editor window should pop up
<TheSheep> scroll down and find a line that says 'Exec=network-admin'
<TheSheep> replace it with 'Exec=gksudo network-admin'
<TheSheep> sorry
<guigz> cool...thanks
<TheSheep> replace it with 'Exec=gksu network-admin'
<TheSheep> this is right
<TheSheep> now save
<guigz> why not gksudo?
<TheSheep> and the menu entry should work
<TheSheep> ah, actually it's the same :)
<TheSheep> I just checked mine
<TheSheep> yes, both will work
<TheSheep> guigz: same with the users and groups and time and date menu entries, btw
<guigz> do you knowI was wondering...
<guigz> xcuse..
<guigz> thanks a lot...
<guigz> Do I need to restart X server?
<TheSheep> no
<TheSheep> it should work right away
<guigz> it doesn't work..
<TheSheep> how so?
<TheSheep> guigz: did you save in th editor?
<guigz> I saved...
<guigz> I opened the file right after and modification was done.
<guigz> But it keeps telling me I'm not allowed...
<TheSheep> and the network settings still displays a message that you're not allowed to change the setting?
<TheSheep> bah
<guigz> yep
<guigz> I'll reboot...
<TheSheep> xfdesktop --reload
<TheSheep> no
<TheSheep> no need
<guigz> ok...I know what's wrong...
<guigz> gksudo is missing
<TheSheep> --0
<TheSheep> gksu is missing too?
<guigz> gksu too...
<adamwest> i'm back
<TheSheep> weird
<guigz> weird since I only did an install
<TheSheep> guigz: well, just install it...
<guigz> not install,update
<TheSheep> adamwest: how it was?
<adamwest> TheSheep: forgot to mention, i was in KDE as we spoke and the login screen works when i log out of both kde and gnome. only xfce makes problems.
<guigz> in fact gksu tells me: missing command to run
<adamwest> and i noticed a message on loging in to xubuntu:
<TheSheep> guigz: aah, did you put 'Exec=gksudo network-admin' there? no typo?
<adamwest> could not look up internet address for USERNAME. This will prevent Xfce from operating properly. It may be possible to correct this problem by adding USERNAME to the file /etc/hosts on your system.
<adamwest> TheSheep: i added the username to that file. didn't owrk.
<adamwest> work
<TheSheep> adamwest: aah, and you should have said so!
<TheSheep> adamwest: what did you add?
* adamwest feeling kinda stupid
<adamwest> my username, just like it said
<adamwest> but it didnt solve anything
<TheSheep> how?
<adamwest> with gedit
<adamwest> sudo gedit /etc/hosts
<TheSheep> yes, ut what id you put there?
<adamwest> ... my username
<adamwest> just in one line
<TheSheep> only?
<adamwest> umm yes... had no idea what else to do :)
<TheSheep> ok, first, it's the computer name you have to put there, not user name
<TheSheep> second, it needs to be something like this:
<TheSheep> 127.0.0.1 localhost ghostwheel
<adamwest> [my comp has the same username and comp name]
<adamwest> OH
<TheSheep> ghostwheel is the name of my computer
<adamwest> mine only says 127.0.0.1 localhost
<TheSheep> just add the name of your computer after it
<adamwest> okay
<adamwest> btw do you think there's a difference in performance between gnome and xfce on ubuntu?
<guigz> any idea for my gksu??
<TheSheep> adamwest: yes
<adamwest> in what way
<TheSheep> guigz: what happens if you type 'gksu network-admin' in the terminal?
<guigz> do work
<TheSheep> adamwest: file manager is **much** faster, the whole thing comes up faster, the default applications provided are smaller and faster
<adamwest> cool
<adamwest> okay ill check now
<guigz> ok I try again
<TheSheep> guigz: check if you didn't make a typo when editing that file
* adamwest is hoping for the best
<guigz> it works...Thanks a lot...
<TheSheep> great
<Kyl1> Hello?
<Kyl1> Can someone help me with something?
<Kyl1> ANYONE?!
<Kyl1> Ugh!
<gnomefreak> !ask
<ubotu> Don't ask to ask a question. Just ask your question :)
<Kyl1> Holy flip.
<Kyl1> Sorry boutst that.
<Kyl1> Haha
<Kyl1> Anywho, how do I install Beryl?
<Kyl1> On Xubuntu, of course.
<gnomefreak> Kyl1: please see the topic in #ubuntu-xgl
<Kyl1> O_o
<Kyl1> Shiny.
<Kyl1> Thanks.
<Kyl1> I'm on my way!
<gnomefreak> i pretty sure there is a way for xubuntu
<TheSheep> The Xubuntu Way
<adamwest> TheSheep: it didn't help D:
<gnomefreak> i only run it on gnome but i have 5 other DE's installed
<TheSheep> adamwest: weird
<adamwest> gnomefreak: what other de do you have
<TheSheep> adamwest: you're still getting the message at startup?
<adamwest> TheSheep: i know. i think ill return to gnome.
<adamwest> TheSheep: no, that message is gone.
<TheSheep> adamwest: at least so much :)
<gnomefreak> adamwest: kde, xfce, blackbox, E17, openbox
<adamwest> i guess u recommed gnome :P
<TheSheep> Window Maker ftw!
* TheSheep hides
<gnomefreak> adamwest: not always it all depends on what people are looking for
<gnomefreak> TheSheep: ;) i love it
<TheSheep> gnomefreak: me too, shame it didn't develop much the last few years
<adamwest> umm blackbox isn't a wm
<gnomefreak> ack - openbox + fluxbox
<adamwest> *isn't blackbox a wm?
<gnomefreak> blqackbox is pretty much same as open or fluxbox
<TheSheep> I wonder where do I get the xfwm themes that were used on these screenshots? http://www.xfce.org/about/screenshots
<gnomefreak> they all were made off of open iirc
<TheSheep> :D
<adamwest> WELL i think i'll uninstall KDE and XFCE from my ubuntu and stay with pure good ol' gnome!
<gnomefreak> TheSheep: xfce-look
<TheSheep> been there, no luck
<Kyl1> I just got XFCE and so far, am quite please with the look of it.
<gnomefreak> now looks at screenshots
<Kyl1> Brown was too much for me.
* adamwest simply got tired of trying to fix his system for two days in a row. He wants to actually -use- his computer...!
<TheSheep> gnomefreak: nevermind, I confused something :)
<Iphigenia> Is there a new version of Xfce out?
<gnomefreak> define out
<TheSheep> released :)
<Kyl1> Hmmm
<TheSheep> Iphigenia: yes
<gnomefreak> brb gonna boot xfce for a few i want to take a look at a few things
<Iphigenia> TheSheep: but not is repositary? Why is that?
<TheSheep> Iphigenia: in repository too, I just installed it
* adamwest has left the building
<TheSheep> Iphigenia: for feisty
<gnomefreak> Kyl1: it seems beryl for gnome will run on xfce too they seem to share same startup files
<Iphigenia> TheSheep: I have XFCE 4.4 Beta 2 after upgrading to Edgy yesterday. But I think this is not the newer version?
<TheSheep> Iphigenia: no, the new version is only in festy so far
<gnomefreak> Iphigenia: 4.4 was released but it will not be in edgy
<TheSheep> Iphigenia: that's the idea of making new versions of ubuntu -- they have new versions of software
<TheSheep> Iphigenia: otherwise one version of ubuntu would be enough :)
<Iphigenia> TheSheep: OIC
<Iphigenia> Said the blind man
<TheSheep> Iphigenia: you don'twant a new version with new bugs in a satble version of ubuntu :)

<Kyl1> Beryl enables you to switch desktops, with a screenshot of each on the side of a cube, right?
<TheSheep> Kyl1: skippy
<Kyl1> ?
<TheSheep> Kyl1: that's the app you're looking for
<TheSheep> !skippy
<ubotu> skippy: full-screen X11 task/window switcher, similar to OSX Expose. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.5.1rc1-5 (edgy), package size 28 kB, installed size 148 kB
<Kyl1> Hmmm
<Kyl1> Synaptic Package Manager?
<Kyl1> In there?
<TheSheep> yes, in universe
<Kyl1> Thanks.
<Kyl1> Wow, I must be like an idiot or something. How do I use it?
<Kyl1> It still switches like normal.
<age6racer> does anybody know a good lightweight FTP client?
<rag> Kyl1: yeah?
<Kyl1> Uh
<Kyl1> Yes, to Rag
<Kyl1> Age6, try Filezilla
<Kyl1> That works nicely.
<rag> Kyl1: what?
<TheSheep> Kyl1: run it and press f12
<Kyl1> It doesnt switch! (Well, it does, I just wanted to be able to switch between desktops with something flashy. Like sides of a cube for instance!)
<Kyl1> K
<TheSheep> xfce doesn't do flashy things
<Kyl1> Gnome?
<TheSheep> no idea
<Kyl1> Hmmm
<Kyl1> What does?
<Kyl1> I want flashy linux.
<TheSheep> ah, theres 3ddesktop
<TheSheep> !3ddesktop
<Kyl1> PRECISELY!!!
<ubotu> 3ddesktop: "Three-dimensional" desktop switcher. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.2.9-5.1ubuntu1 (edgy), package size 74 kB, installed size 448 kB
<Kyl1> That was the first thing I installed!
<Kyl1> But, I didn't know how to use it.
<TheSheep> Kyl1: run it
<Kyl1> Ugh...
<Kyl1> K.
<Kyl1> Oh, wait nevermind.
<TheSheep> Kyl1: bind it to some key
<Kyl1> It wouldn't install because LibCairo2 wouldn't install/.
<Kyl1> install*
<TheSheep> Kyl1: works for me
<Kyl1> Hmmm
<Kyl1> Well, lemme try a couple things I will be back in a bit.
<Kyl1> Damn....
<Kyl1> 3% total downloaded....
<Kyl1> 4%....
<Kyl1> What a talkative room.
<Kyl1> Well, I am off to bed.
<Kyl1> G'night.

<Prodoc> good afternoon
<TheSheep> hello Prodoc
<Prodoc> I've got a few quick questions about xubuntu, I hope you can help me out
<TheSheep> !ask | Prodoc
<ubotu> Prodoc: Don't ask to ask a question. Just ask your question :)
<Prodoc> :-P
<Prodoc> I'd like to give it a go but which release is recommende? 6.10 or 6.06.1
<Prodoc> -e
<TheSheep> I think that 6.10 is better in case of xubuntu
<Prodoc> I haven't got much linux experience so I don't want to get presented with too much trouble right away ;-)
<Prodoc> ok, so 6.10 it will be
<b9anders> I have managed to make both the top and bottom panel disappear (don't ask) just now. What do I have to do to logout now, to see if that will bring it back?
<Prodoc> if I install it, will I get presented with an update to the final Xfce 4.4 release?
<TheSheep> b9anders: go to settings manager, click on panel settings, and add the panels back
<TheSheep> Prodoc: no
<TheSheep> Prodoc: the xfce 4.4 wil be included in 7.04
<TheSheep> Prodoc: in April
<Prodoc> ah, thank, I was just going to ask when a new update was going to be available ;-)
<TheSheep> Prodoc: the 6.10 has xfce 3.99.9rc2 :)
<TheSheep> Prodoc: "almost there" ;)
<Prodoc> Ah, in that case I must have misread the site, I though it was using a later beta or rc
<Prodoc> http://www.xubuntu.org/news/6_10_released talks about 4.4 beta 2
<b9anders> sheep, the top panel is gone. I can't access the settings manager right now.
<Prodoc> I'd like to have postgreSQL and perl installed. Do you recommend me to install Xubuntu 6.10 and install postgreSQL and perl afterwards or am I better off installing Ubuntu server and manually install Xfce afterwards?
<gabkdlly> b9anders: Alt-F2 , then: xfce-setting-show
<b9anders> thanks. but something has gone wrong. the panels button simply won't open
<b9anders> here's what I did:
<TheSheep> alt+f2 and type 'xfce4-panel'
<b9anders> I made a quick launcher for the top panel, with three command lines, only I left them blank (needed to go back later and check them). Then curisoity got the better of me and I started the quick launcher with nothing in it and voila, both top and bottom panels disappeared and I can't edit the settings for the panelin the settings manager either
<b9anders> it worked! thanks, sheep.
<TheSheep> b9anders: you can also try and report a bug on bugs.ubuntu.com
<b9anders> I'll do that
<Prodoc> are there any important differences between installing Xubuntu or ubuntu server with Xfce manually if the main purpose for the system is to function as a server?
<TheSheep> Prodoc: basically, xubuntu *is* ubuntu-server with xubuntu-desktop
<TheSheep> Prodoc: why would you install xfce on a server?
<Prodoc> If got a spare system I want to use as a server 'playground' to be able to work on projects 'offline' instead of constantly having to put the stuff online first for testing
<Prodoc> Since my knowlegde of linux isn't very big I do feel I need a GUI
<Prodoc> for easier handling
<Prodoc> though I don't want it to take up too much resources
<Prodoc> since it isn't a brand new system
<Prodoc> PII 750 MHz if I recall correctly with 1 or 1,5 GB RAM
<b9ander1> urgh, the bug before was worse than I thought
<b9ander1> It apparently also crashed xfce4-session, so I can't actually quit xubuntu right now
<b9ander1> I tried running xfce4-session in alt-f2, but it made no difference
<TheSheep> alt+ctrl+backspace
<gnomefreak> b9ander1: on edgy?
<b9ander1> yep
<Prodoc> TheSheep, so you think I'm not making much sence? ;-)
<b9anders> just reporting back in to say ctrl+alt+backspace worked a charm! thanks again, sheep
<Jester45> lol its fun to press
<b9anders> I love xubuntu. It would have taken more 5-6 minutes to get back in with windows at the least
<grazie> Prodoc: you'll have a much better server if you leave off the gui, maybe learn more too.
<TheSheep> grazie: can't learn without a server first :)
<Prodoc> indeed :-)
<TheSheep> Prodoc: but it's better to stick to cli, you'll learn faster this way
<Prodoc> true, but my main goal at the moment isn't learing linux, it's having a server to use ;-) I'll learn about linux more along the way I think. Got some basic solaris cli experience which I can dig up again so it shouldn't be too hard
<Prodoc> ...I think
<grazie> Prodoc: no desktop machine?
<Prodoc> what do you mean?
<grazie> do you a have a desktop as well as a server?
<Prodoc> Aye, I've got a Windows XP system and a spare system which I want to use as a server
*** sc0tt_ is now known as sc0tt
<grazie> Thought about dual booting with XP system?
<Prodoc> yeah, but that would be too much of a hassle, with two systems next to each other I can do research on the windows machine if I run into trouble on the other ;-)
* TheSheep has a livecd for that
<grazie> Prodoc: whatever you feel happiest with.
<TheSheep> Prodoc: usethe windows livecd... oh wait, there is no windows livecd :D
<Prodoc> hehe
<TheSheep> maybe there will be for Vista
<grazie> DVD maybe, but I doubt it
<Prodoc> probably not, they don't have linux users to convince ;-)
<TheSheep> Prodoc: right
<TheSheep> Prodoc: good point
* gabkdlly wishes he could costum build a Xubuntu live cd which "remembers" how Xorg and the network are supposed to be configured
<TheSheep> gabkdlly: you can
<TheSheep> gabkdlly: there are tools for easily building your own livecd
<TheSheep> gabkdlly: you'd have to search the forums for a hawto
<TheSheep> howto
<gabkdlly> cool! thanks :)
<TheSheep> gabkdlly: what do you think, where all the ubuntu forks came from? ;)
<guigz> hello,I have problems with the system/Date and time applet..I cannot launch it anymore since I updated
<guigz> I had the same problem with the service applet...
<guigz> I went into the /usr/share/applications directory and updated the Exec thing in the launcher with "gksu XXXX" but It stl doesn't want to launch
<guigz> any idea?
<TheSheep> guigz: does it work when you type that in terminal?
<TheSheep> guigz: if not, what does it say?
<TheSheep> guigz: wait, didn't you say it works a while ago?
<TheSheep> :/
<guigz> in fact it does work in a terminal
<guigz> but not with the launcher
<guigz> i managed to have it to work with the network applet
<guigz> but not with the date
<TheSheep> guigz: are you sure you typed the right command?
<guigz> gksu time-admin
<guigz> Exec=gksu time-admin
<guigz> it does work in a terminal
<TheSheep> guigz: no typos?
<guigz> and not with the System/Time and date
<guigz> typos?
<guigz> I'm french
<TheSheep> typing errors
<TheSheep> something like spelling errors, only in text
<guigz> with a copy/paste in a terminal,it does work...
<TheSheep> wierd
<guigz> vry wierd
<guigz> i had the same proble with the service applet
<TheSheep> guigz: it works for me
<TheSheep> guigz: maybe the menu entries are cached?
<guigz> maybe
<guigz> how can I uncache them?
<TheSheep> guigz: check the ~/.cache directory
<TheSheep> ah ha!
<TheSheep> delete the files from ~
<guigz> ok
<TheSheep> ~/.cache/xfce4/desktop
<TheSheep> sry
<TheSheep> sorry
<TheSheep> not from ~
<guigz> delete the whole .cache directory?
<TheSheep> no, just /.cache/xfce4/desktop/*
<guigz> ok,I just deleted the whole content
<guigz> and it still doesn't work
<TheSheep> guigz: you did save the files?
<guigz> which files?
<TheSheep> the .desktop files you edited
<TheSheep> just making sure
<guigz> yep...In fact I pasted a newly opened file
<TheSheep> I'm out of ideas :(
<guigz> so am I..wierd since It worked for the network applet
<TheSheep> maybe compare them...
<guigz> i didn't notice anything different..
<guigz> launcher are the same...
<TheSheep> then there is only one explanation: magic
<guigz> I'll try to reboot
<guigz> maybe it will be better
<guigz> ok...
<guigz> I reseted the X server and it's working now...
<TheSheep> so it was cached in memory, after all
<guigz> it seems
<guigz> ..thanks for the help
<cheatersrealm> does xubuntu use nautilus by default?
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: no
<gabkdlly> nope
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: it uses Thunar
<cheatersrealm> hrm, that's good
<cheatersrealm> <- dislikes nautilus
<TheSheep> very :)
<TheSheep> thunar is one of the best parts of xfce :)
<cheatersrealm> maybe I'll re-install with xubuntu today
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: you can install xubuntu on top of ubuntu
<cheatersrealm> I'd prefer a fresh install
<cheatersrealm> partitioning is a little off from how I'd like it
<TheSheep> sure
<cheatersrealm> what's the default music player? rhythmbox?
<gabkdlly> gxiine
<gabkdlly> gxine
<cheatersrealm> what about sometihng with a music library?
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: I use mpd with pympd, I like it very much
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: requires some setup though
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: there is exaile, which is similar to amarok...
<cheatersrealm> heh pympd looks just like rhythm obx
<cheatersrealm> box*
<cheatersrealm> right now I use amarok, but it takes a long time to load with all the KDE libs
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: well, mpd is a daemon -- it loads at startup and starts playing right away
<cheatersrealm> yeah
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: pympd is just for controlling it
<cheatersrealm> I like the advantage of the daemon
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: you can even run it from a different box
<cheatersrealm> yeah
<cheatersrealm> and you can run the web interface to it as well
<TheSheep> and use mpc to bind keys
<cheatersrealm> this might also be overkill for what I want to do though
<TheSheep> :)
<TheSheep> no reason to not take advantage of advanced technology if you have it for free
<cheatersrealm> heh
<cheatersrealm> Exaile is almost the same as amarok
<TheSheep> one drawback -- mpd doesn't have an equalizer
<cheatersrealm> hrm
<cheatersrealm> that should be ok
<TheSheep> so if your sound card doesn't have one -- you can't use it
<TheSheep> but I never use equalizer anyways
<cheatersrealm> my stereo has built-in equilizer
<TheSheep> xmms2 is similar to mpd
*** Wizaado_ is now known as Wizaado
<cheatersrealm> I used to like winamp and xmms
<cheatersrealm> now if I want to do winamp-style stuff I just use xine or whatever
<cheatersrealm> anything with a music library I go for the iTunes style player
<TheSheep> cheatersrealm: library is nice if you have time to tag all your songs properly
<cheatersrealm> that's where Cowbell comes in
<cheatersrealm> :)
<crimsun> exfalso's my pref.
<TheSheep> I'm not impressed and it's still a lot of work
<TheSheep> placing the files in the right directory is faster
<cheatersrealm> crimsun: falso's ok
<cheatersrealm> TheSheep: batch mode worked really well for me, but you had to compile from source
<cheatersrealm> the edgy version is broke
<TheSheep> eek, mono
<cheatersrealm> it uses gtk# frontend
<TheSheep> bleeeh
* TheSheep tries the mediatags plugin for thunar
<cheatersrealm> I had to do a bunch of organizing before I even tried cowbell on my library
<cheatersrealm> I deleted 85% of my music
<cheatersrealm> :)
<TheSheep> no, thanks
<TheSheep> there was that media tags editor that tried to find information on the files on the Internet...
<cheatersrealm> musicbrainz?
<TheSheep> not sure
<cheatersrealm> anyhow, thanks for the info
<TheSheep> crimsun: thanks for the info too
<cheatersrealm> I may or may not be back tonight depending how easy the install is
<vonk_> chgchan ubuntu
<nixternal> a/wi6
<Pekke> hi, could someone help me installing xubuntu over the net?
<Nerd42> Hey, this is an Ubuntu question but for some reason it says "you are banned from #ubuntu"
<cellofellow> really quick, what's a way to sync a Windows laptop and a Linux desktop?
<cellofellow> samba will work but I wanted something more.
<cellofellow> ok, got to go
<darrend_laptop> is there a workaround for the printer settings dialog? (It asks for a root password)
<TheSheep> darrend_laptop: yes, use gksu
<TheSheep> darrend_laptop: either type at the terminal 'gksu printer-admin' or change the 'Exec' line in the /usr/shared/applications/printer.desktop file to use gksu
<TheSheep> (not sure about the file name)
<darrend_laptop> TheSheep: thanks, but if I do 'gksu printer-admin' I get the password dialog but no printer-admin dialog after it
<TheSheep> darrend_laptop: I'm not sure the name printer-admin
<darrend_laptop> ok
<TheSheep> darrend_laptop: it's probably called differently, I can;t check it because I don't have it installed
<darrend_laptop> davisond@davisond-laptop ~ $ grep ^Exec /usr/share/applications/redhat-system-config-printer.desktop
<darrend_laptop> Exec=/usr/bin/system-config-printer
<darrend_laptop> that look right?
<darrend_laptop> gksu system-config-printer is correct :)
<darrend_laptop> thanks
<TheSheep> great

<cryosphere> no

<cryosphere> well I think thats been tried
<cryosphere> moreover
<cryosphere> why are my usb also failing when I can't connect
