<zakaria> hi everybody!
<zakaria> i have a problem
<zakaria> how can i choose mplayer as default video player
<zakaria> on firefox
<zakaria> ?
<zakaria> thank you
<asgilder> How do I stop the timeout in GRUB?
<chaddy> press a key
<chaddy> or edit /boot/grub/menu.lst
<chaddy> you can make it short and hide it
<asgilder> Just comment out the timeout line?
<chaddy> don't know for sure what that will do, give it a go, if you feel like taking a risk
<chaddy> zakaria: try googling "how to firefox mplayer plugin default ubuntu" some useful links in the first page
<Seeker``> lo
<chaddy> o/
<Seeker``> hows things?
<zakaria> chaddy: i found how to fix the problem. after installing mplayer plugin for mozilla, the totem mozilla plugin must be uninstalled

<GazzaK> mornign
<GazzaK> eek
<GazzaK> morning
<stdin> who likes my new nick?
<GazzaK> it's rubbish
<stdin> ahh what do you know :p
<GazzaK> nothin
<Seeker`> good weekend?
*** GazzaK_ is now known as GazzaK
<sheepeatingtaz> Absolute Nightmare this morning
<GazzaK> why?
<sheepeatingtaz> left my flash drive at home.
<sheepeatingtaz> With my portable firefox & portaputty
<GazzaK> awwww
<sheepeatingtaz> having to re-create them on my back-up flash drive as best I can remember
<sheepeatingtaz> but Google browser sync won't connect, so I can't get my bookmarks :(
<sheepeatingtaz> I've put a note in google calendar to backup my main one to my laptop for future use
<sheepeatingtaz> Plus, there's only 3 days till the end of 'term' so there's even less work than normal to be doing!
<GazzaK> work, whats that
<sheepeatingtaz> :)
<sheepeatingtaz> new LR episode due out today, so there's 90 mins :)
<GazzaK> LR?
<sheepeatingtaz> lugradio
<GazzaK> ahhh
<GazzaK> cool
* GazzaK runs off to find it
<sheepeatingtaz> not out yet
<GazzaK> boooo
<GazzaK> hows the missus
<GazzaK> has she told everyone yet?
<GazzaK> repeatedly
<sheepeatingtaz> OK, annoyed that I finish work for christmas 2 days before she does
<sheepeatingtaz> and yes, repeatedly
<sheepeatingtaz> but so have I :)
<GazzaK> hehe
<GazzaK> yay
<GazzaK> whens the wedding?
* sheepeatingtaz looks for his crystal ball
<sheepeatingtaz> we have no money, and no house, and no winning lottery ticket this weekend.
<sheepeatingtaz> Therefore we are saving up like crazy :)
<GazzaK> yeah, it ain't cheap
<GazzaK> tom and I want to get married, but moving house is eating any spare money
<DaveMorris> morning
<sheepeatingtaz> morning DaveMorris
<GazzaK> morning
<Seeker`> what day does everyone finish for christmas?
<DaveMorris> officially Fri, but I've got holidays so Weds for me :)
<GazzaK> finish??? by that definition, one has to have started :p
<Seeker`> ok GazzaK, what day do you stop attending your place of work?
<DaveMorris> he might work from home ;)
* sheepeatingtaz finishes wednesday \o/
<GazzaK> erm, dunno, no-one has told me
<GazzaK> when I turn up for work and no one is here I suppose
<sheepeatingtaz> GazzaK: you sure you aren't supposed to have finished last friday?
<GazzaK> people are here, so no
* Seeker` finishes wednesday \o/
<sheepeatingtaz> saying that, I've been nominated to take my brother to work Thursday and Friday, at Stupid O'clock in the morning.
<GazzaK> stupid o'clock?
<sheepeatingtaz> about half 2 we have to leave, to start work at 3
<GazzaK> 3am?
<sheepeatingtaz> yes
<GazzaK> thats a lie, 3am doesn't exist
<Seeker`> 3am in the morning is a story made up to scare students
<stdin> it dose on a friday night/saturday mornin
<Seeker`> 3am at night exists, usually associated with parties or coursework
<sheepeatingtaz> :)
<GazzaK> :-)
<sheepeatingtaz> He works at the airport, and he's on early shift this week
<sheepeatingtaz> he's just lost his driving licence for speeding. Got caught twice, and he's still in the 2 year danger zone :(
<sheepeatingtaz> hence the family taxi company
<sheepeatingtaz> and seeing as I'm not at work, I get nominated
<DaveMorris> its his own fault he can't get there though
<DaveMorris> its not like his car broke
<GazzaK> i'd charge him
<DaveMorris> it must be around £2/mile at that time
<DaveMorris> if not more
<GazzaK> min of £10 a trip too
<popey> moo
<stdin> baah
<Seeker`> lo
<GazzaK> cluck
<sheepeatingtaz> woof
<GazzaK> meow
<GazzaK> how stupid
<popey> \o/ animal noises
<GazzaK> crazy
<GazzaK> you're all crazy
<Seeker`> and? thats not a problem, is it?
<GazzaK> neep lala boo

<GazzaK> :'(
<popey> Hey you! No be sad! Be happy!
<DaveMorris> your always at the pub popey
<popey> it might seem like that
<popey> but it really isn't the case
<GazzaK> yeah right
<GazzaK> it's pub every lunchtime
<popey> bloke next to me saw the mail come round and said "oooo, my liver hurts"
<GazzaK> damn alcofrolic
<popey> nah, it's the festive season
<popey> and lots of people are leaving/joining so it's rude not to go
<GazzaK> suppose you don't drive to work
<popey> exactamundo
<popey> I get to snore at people on the train
<GazzaK> a bit different if you have to drive to work
<popey> ooo.. my phone has an "ignore" button
<GazzaK> mine has a forward button - I forward it to anyone who has annoyed me that day
<popey> http://www.munit.co.uk/blog/2006/12/15/careful-hiring-contractors
<sheepeatingtaz> popey: is that why you aren't doing much work? ;)
<popey> :)
<GazzaK> OMG, thats funny
<sheepeatingtaz> GazzaK: http://www.lugradio.org/episodes/67 <-- there you go
<snail> does anyone know of someone in the UK who could run a course on building debian/ubuntu packages?
<snail> preferably someone with experiance teaching small groups of people
<GazzaK> thanks sheepeatingtaz
<Seeker`> woo for free stuff
<GazzaK> jono bacon in a french accent is just crazy
<GazzaK> matthew had a baby - that must have been hard
<jono> :P
<GazzaK> I was just messing about, trying to figure out how to get the ogg's onto a cdr so I could play them in the car, then remembered my car head unit can play mp3's and you have mp3's on the lugradio site - d'oh
<GazzaK> jono, you should sell dvd's with the whole series on them - hours worth of inane chatter
<jono> GazzaK: heh, that would be odd
<mattl_> i'd take a LUGRadio DVD, as a way of supporting the show.
<popey> http://www.macwork.com/2006/12/09/macinferno-part-ii-the-full-story-of-how-the-cable-company-incinerated-my-powerbook/

<mattl_> popey: i love how people say 'i posted a blog' when they mean 'blog entry'
<popey> :)
<popey> morning mattl_ by the way
<mattl_> morning.
<mattl_> i slept amazingly well last night.
<popey> ditto :)
<popey> you took up too much of the bed though ;)
<snail> popey: that would be great. does he have a name?
<snail> popey: or better a url and email address?
<popey> one mo, just asking him
<mattl_> popey: ;)
<snail> popey: it's internal training for http://www.oss-watch.ac.uk/
<popey> snail: have asked him but he looks to be away from keyboard, want to throw me your email address and I will pass it on
<snail> popey: stuart.yeates@oucs.ox.ac.uk

<GazzaK> ha, how many
<Seeker`> heh
* Seeker` assumes popey missed the 's' off the end of the sentance
<popey> just two
<GazzaK> two pubs
<mattl_> two breweries.
<GazzaK> two towns worth of pubs?
<Seeker`> two million pubs
<sheepeatingtaz> </dr evil> ?
<Seeker`> lo LoudMouthMan
<LoudMouthMan> hello Seeker
<Seeker`> how are you?
<LoudMouthMan> yeah fine . been hectic with Client visits and on site work since last week ! ive not even had time to do filing or blogs. , and you ?
<Seeker`> i'm good
<Seeker`> just got lots of cheap vodafone / ferrari stuff
<LoudMouthMan> oooh nice !
<Seeker`> as vodafone no longer sponser ferrari they decided to give away all their old stuff for a charitable donation
<Seeker`> so i got a holdall, an umbrella, a mug, 4 tshirts (that will probably be too big), a radio headset and a baseball cap
<Seeker`> for somewhere between £15 and £20 in total
<LoudMouthMan> i sense a EBAY !
<X3N> it would be better if gnome and kde were built on the same frameworks
<DaveMorris> LoudMouth, you'll have to make sure you don't lie to your clients over skype, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6179117.stm
<LoudMouthMan> hmm I see a few new nicknames on channel today .
<LoudMouthMan> DaveMorris. I never lie to my clients, hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, bugger sorry my nose just got stuck on the keyboard.
* X3N tuts
<X3N> I never lie
<popey> |------------------------------------->|
<X3N> when i'm pushed i'm abiguise
<popey> not lie lie
<Seeker`> when in doubt, mumble; when in trouble, delegate
<LoudMouthMan> Anyway speaking of clients, Davemorris did we decide which day youd pick up these racks from me ?
<DaveMorris> nope
<LoudMouthMan> okay well tommorow is good all day otherwise it was a evening visit if I reacall ?
<DaveMorris> Evening Tues/Weds All day thurs/fri
<LoudMouthMan> hmmm All day Friday is better then
<DaveMorris> yeah, you wanna send me your addy and a contact number via email then
<LoudMouthMan> okay
<DaveMorris> wonder if this will work with astreix http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6189145.stm
<DaveMorris> still need to set that up
<Garg> It says it uses skype
*** Garg is now known as Gargoyle
<DaveMorris> yeah, just read the spec sheet, and it has skype built in
<DaveMorris> so you don't even need a PC
<Gargoyle> that's clever.
<DaveMorris> will prob catch on alot better with normal users
*** tsmithe is now known as TheGods
*** TheGods is now known as tsmithe
<jamesbrose> hey everyone
<DaveMorris> fucking maplin website is crap
<LoudMouthMan> hooray just had a letter from Electricity company:
<LoudMouthMan> I am now owed 700 pounds !
<LoudMouthMan> hey Jamesbrose
<DaveMorris> you got a rebate for virtuallizing your servers at home?
<LoudMouthMan> hahah probably
<DaveMorris> I've been playing with xen it it seems quite nice
<DaveMorris> almost home time :)
<LoudMouthMan> <-- had been home all afternoon ! office tidy'd, bills sent, money recovered and hogfather moved from sky to avi!
<DaveMorris> yeah I need to 'borrow' a copy of that from TPB
<LoudMouthMan> tpb?
<DaveMorris> thepiratebay
<LoudMouthMan> ahhh .
<LoudMouthMan> hmm well your welcome to sit and watch it friday !
<constrictor> how do you use ubuntu-calendar
<LoudMouthMan> ooh good question , you mean to add events and notifications ?
<constrictor> well there's this package that costumises your desktop by month
<constrictor> ubuntu-calendar
<diocles> Heh.
<diocles> constrictor: You know that it's no longer updated, right?
<constrictor> oh it's not?
<constrictor> right i see
<diocles> 'Fraid not. There was some controversy.
<LoudMouthMan> ahh sorry I thought you meant the wiki one!
<diocles> constrictor: It would have been quite easy to use - new calendars were shipped through the update system.
<constrictor> what was the controversy?
<constrictor> it sounds like a really good idea
<diocles> The images were the controversy, I'm afraid.
<constrictor> aww
<constrictor> that's a shame to kill off something like that for something so trivial as images
<LoudMouthMan> ah yeah .. partial nudes. probably no problem in "european" countries but big problem in the more shall we say prudish countries.
<diocles> You can still install it, if you really want.
<constrictor> was just asking, i saw it in the repos and i was wondering about it that's all
<LoudMouthMan> hey X3n you around ?
<sheepeatingtaz> I thought the calendar itself was a good idea. Although I can see why some people took a dislike to the images
<GazzaK> OMG damnit, I hate working late!!!
<mattl_> nytol.
<X3N> wonder what loudmouthman wanted
<X3N> LoudMouthMan: did you want something ?
<LoudMouthMan> yeah was that you posting such positive comments re Dreamhost ?
<LoudMouthMan> ahh no i see it wasnt .. sorry <grin>
<LoudMouthMan> I HAVe no idea why in my brain I point X3N to mkde ? but I keep doing it !
<X3N> glad i could help :p
<LoudMouthMan> X3N no worries . unless I actually meet you and attach a RL face to a IRC Nickname my brain just seems to allocate random address space for pointers to people!
<X3N> you have met me !!
<LoudMouthMan> then I suck !
<X3N> i was at the expo with my brother on the gnome uk stand
<LoudMouthMan> sorry ! see brain going to mush !
<X3N> came over to talk to you guys a few times :)
<X3N> it's ok, the expo was pretty hetic
<LoudMouthMan> yeah .. there you go . now I remember. my advice dont get old and drink as much as me !
<X3N> i'll let you off with a caution this time
<LoudMouthMan> whipper snapper !
<LoudMouthMan> Hello FireFoxx,
* LoudMouthMan awaits the arrival of Thunder-Bird
<X3N> next time it's points on your driving licence or something =D
<FireFoxx> hiyas
<LoudMouthMan> yeah yeah X3N .
<X3N> how's it going FireFoxx ?
<FireFoxx> not bad and urself
<X3N> yeah pretty good
<X3N> just catching up on some spooks episodes
<FireFoxx> i used to watch it but not now
<X3N> yeah, it's not as good as it used to be
<X3N> what is cool though is that i'm using xdmcp do my desktop and it's running video fine
<X3N> i wonder what speed the connection is.. anyone know off the top of their heads how to find the connection speed ?
<X3N> hmm gnome's system monitor thing will do
<X3N> 9.7 MiB/s
<GazzaK> I remember you at linuxworld X3N
<GazzaK> arghhh, I hate working late, it's like a morgue here
<homegrown> evening all

<Seeker`> "ops" means a channel operator - someone that has the ability to kick you from the channel, or, if they wish, ban you

<robin_> i use xubntu and fluxbuntu aswell
<Seeker``> how long have you been using it for?
<robin_> 6 weeks
<Seeker``> how are you finding it?
<robin_> i have one windows xp mce downstairs which is my prents
<robin_> i like ubuntu
<robin_> better than windows
<robin_> u
<X3N> hi robin_
<Seeker``> have you tried KDE?
<robin_> hey hey

<robin_> st.albans
<X3N> oh right
<robin_> welwyn garden city
<robin_> imi wgc
<robin_> u
<X3N> i just said..
<robin_> oh
<robin_> do i no u
<X3N> probably not, unless you went to verulam school
<robin_> nope
<robin_> i go to stanborough
<robin_> im 13 dude
<X3N> oh right
<robin_> whats kde like
<chaddy> bloaty
<X3N> i did a sailing course at stanborough, only time i've been there though
<chaddy> but comfortable
<robin_> is it awfull
<X3N> it's different
<Seeker``> its just different to gnome
<robin_> ive used ubuntu fluxbuntu xubuntu all windows and os 10
<robin_> u
<robin_> people
<Seeker``> recently, i've used ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, fedora core, debian, windows
<robin_> kl
<robin_> i like windows mce
<robin_> coz ive got it
<robin_> on my hp
<robin_> on my p3 i hve ubuntu
<robin_> my p2 xbuntu
<X3N> this is a screenshot of the latest kde http://www.kde.org/screenshots/images/3.4/snapshot11.png
<robin_> and my laptop which im on ubuntu
<X3N> the main differences are the feel of the interface, as they have gone for a different approach
<robin_> thats bpretty kl
<robin_> ye
<robin_> its a kl interface
<Seeker``> KDE feels a bit more like windows
<X3N> more bubbley and less proffesional in my opinoin
<robin_> it looks like it
<robin_> can i get it
<Seeker``> yes
<robin_> where from
<robin_> or is there a sudi aptitude
<robin_> sudo
<Seeker``> you should just be able to run apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, but i'd check with someone else to see if that will cause any problems or not
<robin_> alec will no
<robin_> alllllec
<robin_> alec
<robin_> alec
<alecjw> robin_: i expect that it's kubuntu
<alecjw> robin_: sudo aptitude isntall kubuntu-desktop to isntall it
<robin_> kubuntu is a command line i thouht
<X3N> i'm pretty sure that installing "kubuntu-desktop" will work
<Seeker``> kubuntu is ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome
<X3N> same as xubuntu is ubuntu with the xfce desktop
<Seeker``> but if you install the kubuntu-desktop packages you will have both KDE and Gnome
<alecjw> robin_: no. cubuntu is commandline, kubuntu is kde
<alecjw> maybe i should rename the cubuntu project to clubuntu
<robin_> apparently that apt doesnt have super cow powers
<X3N> then it would be inconsistent alecjw :)
<X3N> robin_: use synaptics
<X3N> system menu > administration > synaptic package manager
<alecjw> robin_: you mush have spelt install wrong. besides, it will take hours to download. do it tomorrow
<Seeker``> robin_: what speed connection do you have?
<X3N> standard ntl
<Seeker``> X3N: how fast is that?
<alecjw> ive got to go to bed now. bye
<X3N> good night
<alecjw> (i love not having to explain that i live in the UK, and that it's midnight here rather than 6pm)
<Seeker``> night
<X3N> Seeker``: depends
<X3N> it's cable, so it can vary all the time
<X3N> good evening jono
<jono> hey
* jono is releasing a new song in a sec
<tsmithe> yay!
<tsmithe> song
<tsmithe> is it any good?
* X3N wonders if you would any author to say no
<X3N> hmm expect fell out of that sentence
<tsmithe> yeah
<tsmithe> and no
<tsmithe> i wouldn't
<bluenose> hello, anyone here involved with any open source projects, i want to get involved but don't really know where to start
<X3N> what kind of thing are you looking for ?
<bluenose> don't know, anything i suppose
<tsmithe> we're all involved with ubuntu
<tsmithe> what can you do?
<tsmithe> find something you enjoy, and do it!
<GazzaK> eeek, back in the office again
* GazzaK wants his bed!!!!
<bluenose> i'm a windows .net programmer by trade
<tsmithe> ok
<tsmithe> so you could do mono programming
<tsmithe> like banshee
<tsmithe> or beagle
<bluenose> i've done some c, c++ postgres , php in the past
<tsmithe> you could do bug triaging (fun)
<tsmithe> or help with gnome or kde
<tsmithe> it's all open source
<tsmithe> so help with anything
<tsmithe> :)
<tsmithe> you do what you want
<tsmithe> otherwise there's no point doing it
<tsmithe> why do something that's not fun!
<Seeker``> GazzaK: You do realise it isn't 11am?
<GazzaK> Seeker``, server died
<tsmithe> although... i don't know if packaging alsa-firmware is "fun"...
<Seeker``> ouch
<X3N> bluenose: A lot of people get involved with open source by contributing to the things they use, for example my brother Thos works for openedhand who use gtk and other gnome bits, so he oftern is fixing gnome bugs or implimenting features that have been requested
<tsmithe> Seeker``, huh?
<X3N> find out who is responsible for what projects, hang around, submit patches to them
<X3N> that's pretty much how it works
<Seeker``> tsmithe: was directed at GazzaK
<tsmithe> ah
<X3N> that is, if you want to do development work
<bluenose> ok thanks guys, i suppose my first job is to pick a project, that could take a while in itself
<GazzaK> wooo, it's finally figured out how to find the tape
<GazzaK> OMG, it's backing up data
<GazzaK> shame a full backup is gonna take 25 hours
<Seeker``> :S
* GazzaK hates backupexec 8.6
<GazzaK> coffee, brb
<X3N> bluenose: my first development contribution to an opensource project was just a bug i came across in an application that i was able to solve and i submitted the changes i had made, they were then included in the project :)
