<Alter-Ego> good morning/evening
<buddhalover> hi world
<buddhalover> i'm using dyne:bolic
<Alter-Ego> ?
<buddhalover> it's nifty. :P my ubuntu is broken.
<buddhalover> http://dynebolic.org
<buddhalover> hi alter-ego. good mornin
<Alter-Ego> good evening
<Alter-Ego> found it
<buddhalover> rastasoft. still getting the hang of it. i can only use the net on this. my ubuntu won't browse. will connect to router but won't browse or connect to archive.ubuntu...
<buddhalover> so i'm burning back ups and contemplating migrating to something else...
<Alter-Ego> ?
<Alter-Ego> won't connect outside the router?
<buddhalover> yup...
<buddhalover> its just the ubuntu box that does this. the windows xp laptop my brother uses is connecting.
<buddhalover> also this laptop that's running dyne:bolic ... well is connected ... i can browse fine. been browsing for a solution for a bit...
<Alter-Ego> but you can access the router. do you control the router ?
<buddhalover> yup. :) i can access the router using all boxes.
<Alter-Ego> it's not a mac address thing is it. ie, do you have the mac address listed as being able to connect to the outside ?
<buddhalover> i just reset it to default ...
<buddhalover> i don't think so...
<Alter-Ego> have you checked your mac address table to see what mac address are allowed ?
<Alter-Ego> is your router serving DHCP addresses ?
<buddhalover> yup dhcp
<Alter-Ego> is your ubnuntu network accepting dhcp configuration ?
<Alter-Ego> what does ifconfig say ?
<buddhalover> mac filtering is disabled.
<buddhalover> right now my ubuntu box is burning backups...
<buddhalover> ifconfig?
<Alter-Ego> if you open a konsole and type ifconfig, are you getting an ip address ?
<buddhalover> just typed it in terminal
<buddhalover> its a bit long to copy out...
<buddhalover> hmmnn..
<Alter-Ego> yes, you should see eth0 and an ip address if your router is leasing you an ip address
<buddhalover> ra0 link encap:ethernet
<buddhalover> inet addr:192.168.101
<Alter-Ego> 192.168.1.101 ?
<buddhalover> bcast 192.168.1.255
<Alter-Ego> k, can you ping www.yahoo.com ?
<Alter-Ego> ping www.yahoo.com
<Alter-Ego> in konsole
<buddhalover> unknown
<buddhalover> host www.yahoo.com
<Alter-Ego> on your windows box in a command window when you ping www.yahoo.com do you get the same
<buddhalover> i'll try pinging from this box. the windows box is in the other room...
<Alter-Ego> heh, that is a good idea, can you ping the windows box ?
<buddhalover> ently on windows part) but the installer wont go. I got live CD for 6.10 X86 computers. Here's my problem, it will freeze when the orange bar fills. So, I set up to go at 1024 and 32 bit. It passed it to show me an error screen about XServer. I know my comp can't run XServers, In GParted I need to use "Xvesa" or something that's a m
<buddhalover> Wiltre ini Xserver. Can I install Ubuntu without Xserver using a mini version or something? I have an ati x700 card.
<buddhalover> gaurav19 I just found this: http://www.hevnikov.com/blog/2006/11/13/triple-boot-xp-vista-ubuntu-with-single-boot-screen/
<buddhalover> ScreaminIke i'll see if i can haxor- 31337 browse them

<buddhalover> mikebot actually, if anyone can tell me how
<buddhalover> oops
<buddhalover> okay dynebolic terminal pings yahoo okay...
<buddhalover> it keeps pinging though...
<Alter-Ego> it's supposed to. in linux the ping will continue until you tell it to stop
<Alter-Ego> sounds like a dns problem
<Alter-Ego> perhaps
<buddhalover> how to stop pinging?
<Alter-Ego> ctl - z
<buddhalover> nice
<buddhalover> thankies
<buddhalover> :)
<buddhalover> dns problem?
<Alter-Ego> see if you can ping an ip address 24.225.23.1
<buddhalover> yep. but it stops.
<buddhalover> just one ping.
<Alter-Ego> 131.161.247.232
<Alter-Ego> try that one
<buddhalover> okay ... now it keeps going
<buddhalover> :)
<Alter-Ego> ok, that tells me that your ubuntu is getting out to the outside world
<Alter-Ego> through the router
<Alter-Ego> check your network settings, and check your dns or domian name server settings
<Alter-Ego> you can find public dns servers to add manually if your router is not serving the dns information to you
<Alter-Ego> on idea is to look at your windows install using ipconfig in the command window and see what dns servers it is pointing to and use those
<Alter-Ego> s/on/one
<Alter-Ego> basically what is happening, is your sending a request for www.yahoo.com and it is not resolving to an ip address lookup because the dns server in ubuntu is either wrong or down or not there.
<buddhalover> how to check for dns server in ubuntu terminal?
<buddhalover> okay according to network gui
<buddhalover> ...
<buddhalover> there is no dns server
<Alter-Ego> ah ha, that is your problem
<buddhalover> if i can check what my dns is for this dynebolic machine i can copy it... how to check for dns server being used here? using terminal
<Alter-Ego> 192.58.128.30
<Alter-Ego> put that one in and then after the network is restarted, you should be able to browse the internet. at least to see if it works
<Alter-Ego> or better yet, here
<Alter-Ego> http://80.247.230.136/dns.htm
<Alter-Ego> 64.81.45.2
<Alter-Ego> 64.81.111.2
<Alter-Ego> 64.81.127.2
<Alter-Ego> 64.81.79.2
<buddhalover> okay.
<buddhalover> okay.. networking gui won't save the dns server address i try adding.
<buddhalover> i close it and when i open it again ... blank dns server...
<Alter-Ego> are you in administrator mode there ? or do you need to apply it ?
<buddhalover> before opening the gui it asks me for the password
<buddhalover> no i guess not
<Alter-Ego> so r u entering the password ?
<buddhalover> yep
<buddhalover> now it stops asking for it.
<buddhalover> when i open and close
<buddhalover> but still won't save dns changes
<buddhalover> reverts to blank
<buddhalover> hey alter-ego salamat ha.
<buddhalover> maybe i can change these settings in terminal?
<buddhalover> reverts to blank...
<Alter-Ego> after inserting your dns information and the network restarts, have you tried a web page ?
<Alter-Ego> let me search for an ubuntu live cd ... then i will reboot and i can help you better
<buddhalover> tried your suggestion. i didn't close. just inserted dns. tried browser no go.
<Alter-Ego> i use kubuntu ... k, rebooting
<buddhalover> keeps blanking out dns.
-butiki- +News from slashdot: FSF Launches "BadVista" Campaign
<buddhalover> u edit /etc/resolv.conf
<Alter-Ego> so did that work ?
<mangz74> hey alter-ego
<buddhalover> it's blank
<buddhalover> should i just type the dns server in?
<Alter-Ego> nameserver 24.225.0.1
<Alter-Ego> nameserver 24.225.5.2
<Alter-Ego> nameserver 24.225.0.253
<Alter-Ego> so, find out what your dns is on your other box or your windows box an then add that to your file
<Alter-Ego> it should not be empty however, you should have a host name. r u sure ur getting dhcp ?
<Alter-Ego> hi mangz74
<mangz74> :)
<Alter-Ego> so, in terminal, sudo nano /etc/resolve.conf
<buddhalover> okay done :)
<Alter-Ego> so do you have a host name, or just those lines ? btw, that is my nameserver for my isp, so that would not work best for you
<Alter-Ego> search Sparrow
<Alter-Ego> nameserver 24.225.0.1
<Alter-Ego> nameserver 24.225.5.2
<Alter-Ego> nameserver 24.225.0.253
<Alter-Ego> this is what mine looks like
<Alter-Ego> so you open up System --> Administration --> Network Settings --> Click on Ethernet Connection --> and then Properties --> and the configuration shows DHCP ?
<buddhalover> mine is blank.
<buddhalover> yup shows dhcp
<buddhalover> sudo nano /etc/resolve.conf is blank in this box...
<Alter-Ego> so do you have the dns server ip address from your other box, actually you could copy the one from the live cd box and use the same here
<Alter-Ego> or duplicate it anyway
<buddhalover> resolve.conf in ubuntu box is nameserver 68.81.111.2 but i just plugged this in...
<Alter-Ego> what does the other box say ?
<buddhalover> dynebolic box : empty.
<buddhalover> strange...
<Alter-Ego> does your router have a local domain name entry ?
<buddhalover> i don't think so.
<buddhalover> there are three files.. resolv.conf. resolve.conf and resolv.conf.dhclient-new
<Alter-Ego> less resolv.conf
<Alter-Ego> less resolv.conf.resolve.conf
<buddhalover> blank
<Alter-Ego> less resolv.conf.dhcclient-new
<buddhalover> i o error
<Alter-Ego> now you are in the /etc directory yes ?
<buddhalover> yes
<buddhalover> resolv.conf.dhcclient has nameserver blah
<buddhalover> i o error when i try to edit resolv.conf
<Alter-Ego> k, don't worry bout it.
<Alter-Ego> sudo mv resolv.conf resolv.conf.20061215
<Alter-Ego> touch resolv.conf
<Alter-Ego> er, sudo touch resolv.conf
<Alter-Ego> sudo nano resolv.conf
<Alter-Ego> add dns servers
<buddhalover> mv
<buddhalover> get io error
<Alter-Ego> ctl + O
<buddhalover> i am alreadty root
<Alter-Ego> new or old computer ?
<buddhalover>
<buddhalover> cannot touch resolv.conf
<buddhalover> not so old not so new
<Alter-Ego> can you nano and change it ?
<Alter-Ego> ctl + O to save and ctl + X to exit
<Alter-Ego> once you have the ip address listed .. of course with nameserver
<buddhalover> tried that io error when saving
<Alter-Ego> well, i am going out on a limb here. you either have a bad hard drive or a bad ide connector
<buddhalover> fsck
<Alter-Ego> my guess is a hard drive going bad. the way to test this, is to boot the computer up with a live cd and see if works
<Alter-Ego> am i right people ?
<buddhalover> damn...
<buddhalover> i'm going to backup and upgrade to edgy eft
<Alter-Ego> if it is your hard drive, won't do you any good. it could just be a bad file system as well
<Alter-Ego> what did you plan to use this computer for ?
<buddhalover> oh surfing. burning discs.... music,..
<buddhalover> just going to save my musi
<buddhalover> c
<Alter-Ego> bad kernel ... ya, you can try re-installing ...
<Adames_> hello people
<buddhalover> hi adames
<Alter-Ego> hi Adames_
<Alter-Ego> so, how did you find out about resolve.conf ?
<buddhalover> alter-ego ubuntu channel
<Alter-Ego> ah yes. good help if you don't get lost in the crowd
<Alter-Ego> i am so gui oriented anymore i have almost forgot most of my cli
<Alter-Ego> well, i am rebooting to kubuntu ...
<buddhalover> hmnn... talaga? diba mas okay ang command line?
<buddhalover> okay i managed to delete it.
<Alter-Ego> ?
<Alter-Ego> managed to delete the resolv.conf ?
<Adames_> why delete resolv.conf?
<Alter-Ego> it's not working for him, it is empty
<buddhalover> now i replaced...
<Adames_> hmmm.. why not just edit it.
<Adames_> nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
<Alter-Ego> he gets an io error
<Adames_> thats weird
*** Adames_ is now known as Adames
<Alter-Ego> ya, he was unable to connect to web sites but had a connection, so checking his configuration showed he had no nameserver
<Alter-Ego> and it would not save, could not be mv etc.
<Adames> could it be his text editor?
<Alter-Ego> nano
<Alter-Ego> he should be able to mv without an io error. bad drive or file system is my guess
<Adames> ya
<Alter-Ego> had me scratching my head
<Adames> usually i use nano or vi
<Alter-Ego> i have never used vi ... clueless there, been using nano since it came out
<Alter-Ego> anyhow, i am going back to kubuntu ...
<Adames> wb Alter-Ego
<Alter-Ego> thx u
<buddhalover> kde is a memory hog?
* Alter-Ego shrugs
<Alter-Ego> don't know, i do know it runs faster than any windows xp at work and i have less power
<buddhalover> hmmm... do you have other dns i can punch in?
<Alter-Ego> can you write to the file now ?
<buddhalover> yep
<buddhalover> now the gui shows dns servers...
*** purserj_ is now known as purserj
<Alter-Ego> can you connect to any web page ?

<buddhalover> ?
<Alter-Ego> and that is beyond what i can do ...
<buddhalover> hmnnn...
<buddhalover> i was thinking someone hacked into my box and fucked with it.
<Alter-Ego> does your router have a local domain ?
<Alter-Ego> use ipcop
<Alter-Ego> if you have an old pc
<buddhalover> local domain? umm... i don't think so.
<buddhalover> it's set at default. the router.
<Alter-Ego> your ubuntu machine does not have a proxy configured ?
<Alter-Ego> samhain - first thing to put on if you redo your system
<Alter-Ego> i would also make a different directory for /home
<Alter-Ego> er partition
<Alter-Ego> https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/serverguide/C/network-configuration.html
<buddhalover> no proxy i use the setting direct connection to internet
<buddhalover> i have a diff partition for home.
<buddhalover> :)
<Alter-Ego> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system
<Alter-Ego> check the ubuntu networking guide and check those files ...
<Alter-Ego> /etc/network/interfaces
<buddhalover> ok.. it's working now! :)
