* Hoggs is a complete computer geek/linux noob, and needs help.
<Hoggs> ;-;
<feety> lol
<feety> fire away
<Hoggs> Well, I can't get ubuntu or Xubuntu to boot as a live CD on my server.
<feety> what does it do? ive had problems getting the live cds to work myself
<Hoggs> Ubuntu gets to the begining of the GUI, then stops. And Xubuntu stops ON the loading screen
<Hoggs> I prefreably want Xubuntu to work, since the server's a bit old.
<feety> and you want to test before you install?
<Hoggs> Test?
<feety> well thats what the live cd is for mainly. to try the operating system out before you install it.
<Hoggs> Oh, it works fine on thios computer.
<Hoggs> this*
<Hoggs> So yeah, I've used it.
<feety> i mean, test it on the server hardware.
<Hoggs> Yeah, I guess I'd want to know it it works first. :/
<feety> lol
<feety> does the server meet the system requirements to run the desktop cd??
<Hoggs> Yep.
<Hoggs> 256MB ram
<feety> hmm. so it starts X and then does nothing?
<Hoggs> It stops on the loading screen, then times out, or something.
<feety> which loading screen is that?
<Hoggs> Uhh... The one with the logo, and the loading thing that bounces back and forth. O.o
<feety> back and forth?
<feety> i guess thats usplash
<feety> hmm it should go past that... =\
<Hoggs> ... yeah... The one after you select "Start or install xubuntu"
<feety> i presume you downloaded and burned the discs urself?
<feety> edgy eft or dapper drake discs?
<Hoggs> yeah.
<Hoggs> Uhh?
<feety> lol
<feety> theres two stable versions of ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu/edubuntu, codenamed Edgy and Dapper.. or 6.10 and 6.06 LTS
<feety> do you know which you got?
<Hoggs> 6.10
<feety> oh okay, ive had problems with the Edgy Desktop CDs too
<Hoggs> i have 6.06 ubuntu sihpit CDs as well
<Hoggs> shipit*
<feety> do they work?
<feety> does it*
<Hoggs> Same problem.
<feety> eep
<feety> im trying to remember lol... i dont use the desktop cds anymore :P alternative for me ^^ at least i know it always works =\
<Hoggs> Some one in #ubuntu said to try noapic nolapic... but no go. P:
<feety> yeah thats a stupid option, it doesnt do anything different
<feety> lol
<Hoggs> Bah.
<Hoggs> Stupid. Crappy. Server.
<feety> stupid. crappy. desktop. cds. altho. i. love. ubuntu. i. gotta. admit. they. suck.
<Hoggs> O.o
<Hoggs> Is there a way to install without booting the liveCD?
<Hoggs> It's worth a try.
<Hoggs> The server can take Windows XP, so it whould take Xubuntu fine. :/
<Hoggs> Should*
<feety> download the Alternative CD
<feety> i dont know why they call it that instead of the Install CD
<feety> maybe to confuse people so they wont touch ubuntu, i dunno
<Hoggs> Ugh... I hate bandwith caps. >>;
<feety> lol i know
<feety> telecom have a new uncapped plan apparently
<Hoggs> I'm on telsta's cable
<feety> wellington/kapiti/christchurch aye
<Hoggs> Yeah.
<Hoggs> Just tried X again. About halfway through the loading screen, the CD stops reading.
<feety> eep
<feety> methinks a badly burned cd
<feety> try reburning the iso
<Hoggs> Fuck. I'm outa CDs. <_<;
<feety> lol
<feety> such as always happens
<Hoggs> Never fear! It's payday. and mum wants me to go to the shop.
<Hoggs> :P
<feety> i envy you. you live in a place where town is open on sunday.
<feety> i live in a small town where everything closes at 12 pm :'(
<Hoggs> Where? O.o
<feety> Wairoa, in the north of Hawkes Bay
<Hoggs> Wait... But I know that CD works, I've used it on this computer. <.<
<Hoggs> ><
<feety> perhaps the disc drive itself
<Hoggs> It has 2, one failed and kept giving memory errors, the other -seems- to work ok.
<feety> :/ dunno then lol
* Hoggs headdesk
<Hoggs> So there's no way I can just install from the desktop CD?
<feety> not from that no
<feety> you have to install while X and the xfce4/gnome/kde session are running
<Hoggs> Ok, spent ages digging in the forums.
<Hoggs> Apparenty adding "boot=" in the boot options semi helps.
<Hoggs> oops.
<Hoggs> root*
<Hoggs> This is new...
<feety> what is it
* feety returns
<Hoggs> [17179621.476000] out of memory: kill process (localedef) score 556 and children
<Hoggs> and
<Hoggs> [17179621.476000] out of memory: killed process 2544 (gzip)
<Hoggs> [17179621.476000] out of memory: kill process 2543 (localedef) score 556 and children***
<feety> =\
<Hoggs> O.o;;
<Hoggs> I came accross some one saying it does similer things because the drives are in the wrong order.
<Hoggs> Or... something like that.
<feety> eep
<Hoggs> indeed.
<danielmarsom> my god this is actually a channel! yay!
<danielmarsom> hail everyone
<Hoggs> So I'm not the only one who found this chan today! :D
<danielmarsom> well, gotta go.. i will be back tomorrow to do whatever.
<karora> Hoggs: Are you getting those out_of_memory things during installation?
<Hoggs> No, while the liveCD is booting.
<karora> Oh wow. Does it actually have 256M of working RAM then? How could that be?
<Hoggs> Yeah, it has 256 ram, but to make things even more confusing, it's xubuntu. <.<
<karora> I would think it would be unlikely that Xubuntu would be any different than Ubuntu for the installation process.
<Hoggs> It needs less ram.
<Hoggs> So... :/
<karora> It needs less RAM when it is running, perhaps, but it won't need any less during installation, will it?
<Hoggs> Yeah, I guess.
<Hoggs> But I'm not installing.
<Hoggs> Just trying to get it to boot.
<karora> Just booting the live CD?
<karora> So will it boot any other live CDs OK?
<Hoggs> Nope. But I've only tried Ubuntu 6.06, 6.10, and Xubuntu 6.10
<Hoggs> Preferably want Xubuntu to work.
<karora> Because 256M should be enough for any of those, so something is going wrong, eating all the memory.
<karora> What gets killed by the oom killer can be pretty random
<Hoggs> And the live CDs work fine on this computer.
<karora> Weird problem alright. Is the hardware all sane?
<Hoggs> As far as I know, yeah.
<Hoggs> Just a little old
<Hoggs> It runs windows XP
<karora> There are some optimisations in Ubuntu which are focused toward newer hardware. You might be better to use Debian on it.
<Hoggs> Uhh... what's Debian like? I'm bit of a linux noob.
<karora> Debian is what Ubuntu is built from.
<Hoggs> Doesn't tell me much. :/
<karora> It supports a wider range of architectures, and doesn't focus on the desktop look and feel so much.
<Hoggs> Might try it...
<karora> Ubuntu focuses on getting a distribution on one CD.
<Hoggs> Now, if only I had some bandwidth left.
<karora> A full Debian download is 14 or so CDs, but you can download a smallish one and it does a network install of the rest.
<karora> (of what you want to install).
<Hoggs> Hey, are you an ocnz member by chance?
<karora> OCNZ?
<Hoggs> Overclockers
<Hoggs> .co.nz
<karora> No. The only weird clocking on any of my machines is underclocking one :-)
<Hoggs> How big is debian in totle? O_o;
<Hoggs> total*
<karora> 20628 packages?
<Hoggs> Sounds... big?
<karora> We have a NZ mirror of the i386 architecture and I think that is around 130GB
<Hoggs> ...
<Hoggs> Ho shit.
<Hoggs> That... can't be right. O.o
<karora> But most people don't want much of it installed.
<Hoggs> I'd go for 5GB at the most.
<karora> Yeah. For a server most of what you need fits inside of 2G.
<Hoggs> I was hoping for something with a decent GUI, since it's being given back to my tech noob dad. x|
<karora> Well, Debian has XFCE and such (it has to for Ubuntu to be able to do Xubuntu and so forth), but because it installs in a more piecemeal way you are more likely to see what could be breaking it.
<Hoggs> I came accross this, which looks like people having similer problems: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=186115
<karora> So are you trying to install Ubuntu alongside XP, or over it?
<Hoggs> Over it.
<karora> So you're just installing it normally on /dev/hda, aren't you? How many drives are in your system?
<Hoggs> Just one
<Hoggs> Unless you count 2 CD drives.
<karora> I guess that _might_ be able to confuse it, but I can't imagine how.
<Hoggs> And... again, I'm not installing it, yet. =.=;
<karora> Right, except that it does in essence to an install into a Ramdisk when you boot off the CD.
<karora> Isn't there an option to do the install, rather than boot the live CD?
<feety> not on the desktop cds
<karora> Ah OK.
<feety> not only because its all used up with the data for the live cd, but because the debian packages on the disc arent the standard ones you might use to install etc
<karora> No, though those must be on there somewhere.
<feety> they arent
<feety> the only normal debian packages available are a few (very few) extra packages
<feety> but not the base system etc
<feety> on the desktop cd
<hads> Yeah, that confused me too, the live cd doesn't have debs to install.
