<vidd_laptop> this is what i put in:
<vidd_laptop> dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/vidd/Desktop/win98.iso
<cellofellow> ok
<cellofellow> but did you try booting qemu from the /dev device file? Maybe it's the CD.

<maxamillion> my first plan this summer is to get on the ubuntu control center team, i really want that available asap
<maxamillion> that is the biggest complaint from new users
<somerville32> cellofellow, Well, I'd like to see solid Xubuntu marketing and documentation efforts started and maintained
<maxamillion> "why can't i just have a program that will configure or install this for me?"
<cellofellow> OK. So establish a Xubuntu image and some presence?
* somerville32 nods.
<somerville32> Exactly.
<cellofellow> ok. I'll work on that later. But not really later.
* cellofellow makes a note
<maxamillion> cellofellow: yeah, pretty much .. be like "we are here, loud and proud.... step asside because we are about to start kicking butt and taking names" :)
<somerville32> :D
<somerville32> Also, cellofellow, you should hang out in #xubuntu-devel
<cellofellow> I do sometimes. I also am subscribed to the mailing list.
<somerville32> Awesome. :]
<cellofellow> Well, my dad will get really mad if I don't turn this computer off in a minute. So, cya!
<somerville32> Later

<PuMpErNiCkEl> It's a blend of CS and Quake.
<hyper_ch> or what command to execute to setup again the keyboard selection thing?
<frandavid100> I just installed xubuntu on a low-end machine and it's going very slow, can you point me to a faq or something to get it going a bit faster?
<frandavid100> maybe recommend me a really light web browser?
<hyper_ch> frandavid100: how low is the low end?
<maxamillion> PuMpErNiCkEl: yeah, i got that one ... reminds me of ut-goty

<hyper_ch> frandavid100: get another 64mb ram and it will run much better :)
<PuMpErNiCkEl> frandavid100: Dillo is a low-resource browser.
<hyper_ch> or lynx :)
<PuMpErNiCkEl> maxamillion: There's a surprisingly good resource on free and open-source fps games at Wikipedia.
<frandavid100> the problem is, Im not sure I can get that type of ram. Maybe second-hand

<PuMpErNiCkEl> cool

<maxamillion> brb
<frandavid100> dillo then?
<hyper_ch> frandavid100: actually I found on ebay 2 weeks or so back 64mb and 128mb sd-ram for notebooks... because a friend of mine had the same prolbme
<hyper_ch> instead of running windoze 98 on his old notebook he has now 192mb ram and runs edgy :)
<frandavid100> I could do that too, yeah :D
<hyper_ch> the 128mb block cost him like $ 25.-
<frandavid100> not very expensive
<hyper_ch> frandavid100: compared to the performance boost :)
<frandavid100> ok gonna take a look in ebay
<frandavid100> thanks hyper_ch

<pepik> i installed them with easyubuntu but they aren't working on firefox.
<nicola> http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html
<pepik> isn't that a beta?
<nicola> yes it is, but it's only working

<nicola> I don't know if they added this beta to the repo (I don't think so)

<TheSheep> martin__: for folders, just make a link
<lumaQ1> well ~~ when 7.04 is out, will that be the same for xubuntu too ?
<lumaQ1> or does that have a diff relese date?
<TheSheep> martin__: for other applications, create a launcher -- it's a text file with a '.desktop' extension
<somerville32> lumaQ1, Same release date
<TheSheep> lumaQ1: ubuntu and xubuntu have the same schedule
<lumaQ1> so, what will be different in the xubuntu thats out then

<martin__> ok, now one final question that i have not been able to find the answer to, i have to screens attached to my computer, one CRT and one LCD-TV. They are cloned so that i get the sam picture on both screens and that works fine, but when i want to watch a movie on my TV i only get picture on the CRT screen, the tv just shows a blueish field where the picture should be. Does any one know why this is and how to get picture on my tv?
<lumaQ1> i dont really hate the look of ubuntu, but i think that every release should have something special about it.
<martin__> to=two (sorry)
<lumaQ1> look at windows and mac, that is the first thing that you see.... the default desktop. so i think that it would be better to upgrate the look of the whole thing.
<TheSheep> martin__: looks like an overlay -- the movie is displayed using the graphic card's acceleration, and for some reason that doesn't get output to the second screen -- it's proceessed by a separate chip. No idea how to fix that, though :(
<PuMpErNiCkEl> It's probably not fixable without a change to the video card driver.
<TheSheep> lumaQ1: every release has different backdrop ;)
<lumaQ1> The sheep !! haha LOL thats true...
<lumaQ1> but maybe ~~ you knw...
<lumaQ1> a bigger difference will be nicer. TheSheep are you using xfce?
<TheSheep> lumaQ1: if the whole layout changed everytime, then people who used the previous version would need to get used to the new one
<TheSheep> lumaQ1: yes
<martin__> TheSheep, i think that you are supposed to change the second screen to be the primary screen but i dont know how..
<TheSheep> martin__: probably by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf
<lumaQ1> TheSheep...good point i used to use Mac 9.something then i upgraded to X and that was REALLY different but the idea was the same. just looked nicer.
<TheSheep> martin__: there should be some options to your card driver
<lumaQ1> TheSheep ~ could i see your screen shot? if you have a pic of it.. just wanna see what yours looks like.
<somerville32> lumaq1: That would occur in Winows too, I believe.
<TheSheep> http://sheep.art.pl/iluvwin.png
<lumaQ1> Right it looks nicer and nicer. and lets be honest If it sells....make it look SEXY(thats was ubuntu is anyway just 100%sexy ~~)
<somerville32> TheSheep: Sweet :)
<lumaQ1> TheSheep looks like windows 98 haha
<somerville32> lumaQ1: You can make the different linux desktops look like any other desktop environment
<somerville32> I've seen Ubuntu desktops that look exactly like Vista
<lumaQ1> i know.
<lumaQ1> haha yeah i saw one of those too.
<lumaQ1> i love my desktop.. so i have the peformance of ubuntu and the looks of ~~ i dunno a pink space alien on acid??
<TheSheep> ok, my real screenshot: http://sheep.art.pl/shot.png
<somerville32> I'll take a screenie of mine <g>
<martin__> TheSheep, but there is only one screen defined in my xorg.conf.. guess i have to add it manually?
<lumaQ1> is that terminal your using ?
<TheSheep> lumaQ1: yes, Terminal
<lumaQ1> wow how do you use terminal to do that?
<lumaQ1> CRAZY!
<TheSheep> lumaQ1: ah, you mean the irc client? it's irssi
<lumaQ1> o
<TheSheep> the best irc client I ever used

<lumaQ1> O:-)
<TheSheep> good night
<Jhuri> hi
<maxamillion> Jhuri: hello
<Jhuri> remember me with the problematic k6-2?
<maxamillion> not off the top of my head ... :/ ... refresh my memory a little :)
<Jhuri> I managed to compile a custom kernel on a less problematic celeron
<Jhuri> I had a 386 kernel straight from the repository
<Jhuri> on a k6 that was giving me problems, faulty cpu code, popping noises in sound output, etc
<Jhuri> so I compiled a k6 custom kernel, working much better now
<maxamillion> well thats good
<silvertip257> TheSheep, here's another dummy question, how do i find the menu to change the screensaver? I havent touched my xubuntu in a while b/c this next week is final week :'(
<maxamillion> Jhuri: awesome, glad to hear you got that resolved
<silvertip257> NVM ... it's under settings manager
<TheSheep> silvertip257: yes, no idead why it doesn;t have a menu entry
<Jhuri> maxamillion: thanx
<Jhuri> anbybody wants a bite?
<maxamillion> Jhuri: ?
<Jhuri> the kernel that is ))
<Jhuri> I was surprised with the quantity of people with k6s here
<maxamillion> Jhuri: you should make a wiki page documenting what you did so everyone can benefit from it :) ... http://wiki.ubuntu.com
<Jhuri> haha, its not a big deal there are plenty of pages how to build a custom kernel the debian way
<maxamillion> oh ... okies
<silvertip257> exactly TheSheep that has me puzzled
<Jhuri> there was this ShogoXubuntu person here last night, he had the same problems with his machine, too bad he isnt here today
<silvertip257> thanks for everything .... cya later
<Jhuri> and JKnife has a k6 too
<TheSheep> maxamillion: you think I need to do something to be able to write on the xubuntu-devel mailing list?
<TheSheep> maxamillion: so far none of my posts appeared :(
<maxamillion> TheSheep: really? ... hrmmm... i dunno, i just joined and it worked
<maxamillion> speaking of ....
* maxamillion checks his email
<TheSheep> maybe I'm banned :(
<maxamillion> TheSheep: i doubt it
<ericb> Does anyone have familiarity with installing NVIDIA drivers?
<Jhuri> dont ask a question, ask the question
<PuMpErNiCkEl> Many people. What's your real question?
<somerville32> !ask
<ubotu> Don't ask to ask a question. Just ask your question :)
<somerville32> :D
<somerville32> Oh wait
<somerville32> Isn't there another factoid for this?
<PuMpErNiCkEl> There's an !anyone factoid.
<maxamillion> !nvidia-glx
<somerville32> Oh yeah
<ubotu> nvidia-glx: NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org driver. In component restricted, is optional. Version 1.0.8776+2.6.17.6-1 (edgy), package size 3970 kB, installed size 12312 kB
<maxamillion> :)
<somerville32> !anyone | ericb
<ubotu> ericb: A large amount of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out?
<somerville32> :D
<PuMpErNiCkEl> I think we scared him.
<ericb> no, im here =]
<ericb> it'll take more than that
<maxamillion> ericb: do you use synaptic to install software or the command line?
<Jhuri> sooo?
<ericb> i downloaded the drivers from the nvidia site and used the command line
<ericb> i worked in ubuntu
<ericb> but not for xubuntu
<Jhuri> why wont u use the repository?
<ericb> well i think that's what im about to do
<ericb> i just tried doing what worked with ubuntu
<maxamillion> ericb: yeah, there is the official nvidia drivers available from the ubuntu repositories in an easy to install binary package
<ericb> ok awesome!
<ericb> i'll take a look, ty :)
<cellofellow> anybody know a command line utility that can convert MS-Office 2000 .doc into PDF and/or PNG WITH pics included?
<snype> no clue
<Jhuri> that is a tough one ))
<cellofellow> I don't want to have to install openoffice to turn this document into a read-only format.
<snype> anyone know how to switch from internal to external displays
<maxamillion> cellofellow: abiword ... save as (change file extension to .pdf)
<cellofellow> Abiword would work in normal conditions, but this is a document with lots of pics
<cellofellow> no offense, but abiword sucks with pics.
<maxamillion> meh, i don't care ... i don't devel the app :P
<TheSheep> cellofellow: gimp is good with pics ;)
<cellofellow> what I really need is a command line utility to SSH in from my Granny's computer and run the conversion with.
<TheSheep> cellofellow: try wv
<cellofellow> My preference for this project she has would have been inkscape, but she had Word.
<maxamillion> !wv
<ubotu> wv: Programs for accessing Microsoft Word documents. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.2.1-2ubuntu0.1 (edgy), package size 86 kB, installed size 2112 kB
<cellofellow> ok
<cellofellow> thanks for the tip
<ericb> for nvidia drivers, all that I need is the nvidia-glx package?
<cellofellow> looks good :)
<cellofellow> yeah, and the linux-restricted-modules-<your kernel version>
<maxamillion> ericb: yeah, install nvidia-glx and then change your xorg.conf to use the nvidia drivers instead of the open source nv ones
<Jhuri> ericb: depends what card u got + restricted modules pavkage
<maxamillion> Jhuri: he had the nvidia drivers working from nvidia's website previously, just doing it the easy way this time :)
<Jhuri> ah ok, sorry for interfe rin
<ericb> yeah, debian ftw :)
<maxamillion> Jhuri: no no, input is good... i was just trying to fill you in :)
<maxamillion> ericb: amen ...

<JKnife> o.O
* maxamillion is a long time debian user and uses xubuntu because its the best of the debian world for the desktop
<maxamillion> ? what was that about?
* JKnife has no clue
<ericb> lol
<maxamillion> well it looked like he removed a block/ban from someone, just don't know who or why
<JKnife> ohhh.. i bet one is Jesters
<JKnife> =\ not sure about the other...
<maxamillion> ah, rgr
<ericb> when i installed the nvidia drivers from a binary, it came with a nice gui for changing settings and what not... does that come with the deb package?
<PuMpErNiCkEl> Yup.
<ericb> hmmm, but i dont see it :(
<JKnife> ok.. gotta go to this thing i do not wanna goto
<cellofellow> It should show up in Applications -> Systen
<cellofellow> System*
<ericb> it's not there
<ericb> so far ive installed nvidia-glx and that's it
<maxamillion> ericb: yeah ... forget what its called, something like nvidia-config
<PuMpErNiCkEl> Run 'nvidia-settings' and you should see it.
<maxamillion> yeah, that's it
<ericb> it's strange, i see nvidia-settings in synaptic, i select to install it, and then it wants to remove nvidia-glx...
<Jhuri> buahaha
<maxamillion> ericb: it should have installed with nvidia-glx
<ericb> apparently it wasn't a dependency
<Jhuri> they are not a dependancy
<PuMpErNiCkEl> They used to be packaged separately - the -settings package is a transitional package now.
<maxamillion> ericb: no, not dependancy ... just comes with ... like when you install scandisk, photorec comes with ...
<Jhuri> JKnife, do u listen to music on your k6?
<cellofellow> :? No WINDOWS here

<ericb> ok, i guess i have nvidia-settings, but it doesn't have much of anything
<Jhuri> buahha
<maxamillion> ericb: yeah, i never used it ... they claim the next version is supposed to have more options
<ericb> =/
<ericb> the gui settings from the binary had everything
<ericb> resolutions, brightness/contrast, etc
<maxamillion> ericb: oh, you must have gotten the 9xxx stuffs ... yeah, those will be in the binary package in feisty, they just came out on the nvidia site
<ericb> im assuming feisty is the next *ubuntu release?
<maxamillion> ericb: yes, sorry i didn't clarify
<ericb> no worries :)
<ericb> i could tell by the cheesy name...
<ericb> :P
<maxamillion> lol
<ericb> yeah, this is why i prefer getting stuff straight from the source
<maxamillion> ericb: yeah .. full name is feisty fawn
<ericb> the newest/best
<maxamillion> ericb: you must have been a debian sid user?
<ericb> nope
<maxamillion> oh ...
<maxamillion> testing?
<ericb> i'm not even too sure what that means
<ericb> sid?
<cellofellow> I get errors that I think have to do with fonts when using wvPDF.
<cellofellow> what am I supposed to do?

<quad3d> !ipod

<ericb> oh, i suppose i'm a debian sid user if i prefer going to nvidia.com as opposed to using apt-get/synaptic
<cellofellow> ok
<ericb> but after this nvidia mess, i think i'm going to change my ways :)
<maxamillion> ericb: no, very different ... but i guess in a large generalization it will work
<ericb> debian sid = alpha, beta, etc versions?
<Jhuri> despite my new kernel, I still have video playback issues, like freezing, sound unsynchronized with the picture, etc
<maxamillion> ericb: you could call it that ... debian sid is heavy development (probably alpha and early beta), testing is heavy testing (generally late beta because it has to undergo some testing to make it to the testing branch), and then stable .... stable is rock solid
<maxamillion> Jhuri: install vlc ... might help, i used to have issues with certain players too
<maxamillion> !vlc
<ubotu> Audio (Ogg, MP3...) players: Banshee, Beep Media Player, Quod Libet, Rhythmbox, XMMS (GTK/Gnome based) and Amarok, JuK (Qt/KDE based). Video players: Totem, Xine, MPlayer, VLC, Kaffeine - See also !codecs
<maxamillion> ericb: but debian is the mother distro, ubuntu the child
<Jhuri> vlc particularly, xfmedia with xine engine works alot better
<maxamillion> oh ... hrmm
<maxamillion> i dunno then
<Jhuri> only with some media
<ericb> maxamillion: i think i see the light...
<Jhuri> could it be that my machine is not able to handle it
<Jhuri> a 400mhz k6II 320ram
<maxamillion> ericb: :)
<cellofellow> MPlayer FTW!
<maxamillion> ericb: http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/relationship
<ericb> maxamillion: i tried Fedora Core 6 last night... it's terrible
<maxamillion> ericb: yes, yes it is
* cellofellow has similar stats to Jhuri, uses Mplayer
<ericb> maxamillion: it is so laggy, clunky, slow, etc.
<ericb> maxamillion: updating took forever
<ericb> maxamillion: package management sucks
<Jhuri> cellofellow: got it to, the one optimized for my platform, still freezy
<Jhuri> cellofellow: do u use windows codecs
<cellofellow> What video output plugin?
<cellofellow> Yes.
<cellofellow> Do they not work on K6?
<Jhuri> they do
<Jhuri> slow but do
<Jhuri> xv
<maxamillion> ericb: yeah, FC is cool like that
<Jhuri> which one are u using?
<Jhuri> do u play divx compressed stuff?
<cellofellow> I can't remember which one actually worked, but I had to change my default output plugin and use frame dropping to get decent speed out of Mplayer, especially with .mov
<cellofellow> I don't think I do, sorry. Maybe uncompress them.
<quad3d> i think 6.10 have issues; like fc6
<cellofellow> 6.10 does have issues, that's why 6.06 is still there.
<Jhuri> vlc crashes when I try to decompress with it
<ericb> brb restart
<Jhuri> frame dropping sux hard
<cellofellow> there might be an mplayer command line thing you can do to uncompress those files.
<cellofellow> looks ok to me.
<Jhuri> I get a slide show
<ericb> !nvidia
<ubotu> To install the Ati/NVidia drivers for your video card, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto
<Jhuri> does mplayer have a preference on linux codecs before windows ones?
<cellofellow> No idea.
<cellofellow> What's the easiest way to install M$ fonts?
* cellofellow just can't seem to get along without them.
<cellofellow> !fonts
<ubotu> Font installation basics here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FontInstallHowto - No fonts in Flash? Install "msttcorefonts" (from !Multiverse), "gsfonts", and "gsfonts-x11". No fonts in MPlayer? see !MPlayer
<Jhuri> there is a ttf font package in the repo as far as I know
<cellofellow> I found it, but it doesn't actually include the fonts I think it just makes them easy to install from somewhere else.
<Jhuri> it downloads them for u, as far as i remember
<cellofellow> ok
<ericb> ok, so it appears that xorg.conf acknowledges my nvidia drivers, but I now have to manually enter in what resolutions i want?
