<Vhata> morgypoo
<morgs> Vhata: Hiya J
<Vhata> Worst suggestion so far this week: "Everybody should join the ubuntu-za loco forums!"
<morgs> Nooooo.... come back forum kiddies! The mailing list's the one for you!
<Vhata> *shudder*
<Vhata> maybe it's better if all the forum munkies did leave the mailing lists alone
<morgs> :-)
<morgs> As for IRC...
<morgs> Let's invite the OpenSuSe crowd!
<morgs> or
<morgs> not...
<Vhata> haha
<morgs> Sekrit plans:
<morgs> 1. Everybody join the forum
<morgs> 2. Everybody join the mailing list
<morgs> 3. Everybody join the wiki
<morgs> 4. Everybody join irc
<morgs> 5. ...
<morgs> 6. Profit!!!^wWorld Domination!!!
<Vhata> bwaha
<Vhata> the trouble with ubuntu-za is that the LUGs in South Africa are already so useful
<Vhata> 'useful' is the wrong word there
<morgs> Sure, no point in replacing them, rather trying to find a way to get stuff done in the Ubuntu community with a local flavour...
<morgs> LUGs are great for local support - I'd hate to try and build that - also the global ubuntu community's good for that.
<Vhata> ja
<morgs> Better to try and promote contributions - this is how you become an ubuntu member etc
<Vhata> I just mean, people won't see the point in a LoCo team, because they'll think they've already got local support/enthusiasm/etc
<Vhata> I'm still not sure what I can do for the LoCo team
<morgs> Well the CLUG stand at Futurex was basically an Ubuntu stand with some Debian on the side... For some reason nobody was handing out Gentoo CDs ;-)
<Vhata> heh
<morgs> Stick around, I've been hugely inspired by the LoCo/Community people who were at UDS-MTV - we ain't seen nothing yet.
* Vhata sticks around
<morgs> I'm going to restructure the ubuntu-za wiki so it makes more sense and shows how to get involved.
<morgs> One of the things that will be cool is installfests/bugfests for Feisty - bring along a machine, throw on a milestone release, have a bug reporting party. That's something that is going to be encouraged more and more as people are generally only reporting bugs after release or in the few days before when it's too late to fix them...
<Vhata> ooh ja
<morgs> And of course language translation is something that SA could benefit from - of course I'm basically En- only when it comes to computing but I think people are sitting around waiting for TSF to sponsor all the translations. So that's an area, probably for the crowd who are not yet involved with LUGs but looking for ways to contribute
<Vhata> I installed Flight 6 and Knot 4, and didn't have much time to report bugs at all before the release
<morgs> Bandwidth is always the issue here - elsewhere people are rsyncing the daily builds - could never afford that here. So if one person grabs the ISO and we burn and hand out, we can get more people previewing and testing.
<linuxboy> wow
<linuxboy> stuff happening in this channel
<theoddone> ya. trying out all the IRC's
<Vhata> IRC is a protocol
<Vhata> morgs: you gonna advertise the Monday meeting on the clug lists?
<theoddone> ya. trying the irc servers. irc.ac.za and irc.freenode.com
<Vhata> freenode.net
<Vhata> doesn't SULUG have its own IRC server and IRC channel?
<theoddone> is somebody going to write a how-to for irc chats with linux ?
<Vhata> linuxboy: shall I adapt http://rucus.ru.ac.za/help/notes/irc/ (which I wrote originally anyway) to be more modern, and put it on the clug wiki?
<baL> m00
<morgs> Vhata: Good idea
<baL> Hello ppl
<morgs> Hi baL
<morgs> Vhata: more modern = gaim / xchat...
<morgs> It's not too difficult to fire up gaim on a default install and get to freenode.
<theoddone> linuxboy: can I copy your IRC help page to a page on http://ubuntu.sun.ac.za
<Vhata> ja I know
<Vhata> by 'more modern', I meant, that howto is tailored to rucus users - I'll have bits on irssi, gaim, and xchat, and so on
<Vhata> theoddone: that's not linuxboy's IRC help page, it's mine, and don't bother copying it, it's out of date, and needs redoing
<baL> kvirc is good too.
<theoddone> Vhata: sorry, but when it is ready ?
<Vhata> well I only just looked at it now for the first time in five years
<Vhata> and I'm at work now.
<theoddone> ok. I'll start something with Gaim and Kopete. Screenshots etc..
<Vhata> the Stellenbosch servers are so gorram slow
<theoddone> yeah. check out: http://www.tenet.ac.za/mrtg-new/sun-mc-ipnet-bb.html
<baL> whoah thats interesting
<baL> who's using all that bandwidth?
<theoddone> not sure. but most of the campus graphs show increased traffic.
<Vhata> theoddone: you seem to be redoing a lot of other howtos in that ubuntu.sun.ac.za?
<baL> not many people on the network when I was there last week
<theoddone> vhata: the how-to's are a collection over a year or so. I try to be proactive.
<Vhata> um, what I mean is, there are a lot of howtos, e.g. on the CLUG wiki, and on ubuntu.com, which are being duplicated
<theoddone> ok. I try to make mine campus specific. it's amazing how the same questions come up time and again.
<Vhata> X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869
<Vhata> and he top-posted
<Vhata> so did you, morgs
<morgs> So I did. Bad habit.
<morgs> I also quoted the whole long message.
* morgs has been mailing too many non technical people
<Vhata> Monday, 15th January 2007 !?!
<Vhata> as in, in two months time?!

<Xanadu> ah there are some ppl here
<Xanadu> hello all
<morgs> Xanadu: hi
<Xanadu> trying to guess who's who from postings...
<Xanadu> morgs - Morgan Collett?
<morgs> Xanadu: yes
<highvoltage> hi Xanadu
<Xanadu> hi highvoltage
<Xanadu> so the first meeting's set for January?
<morgs> Xanadu: if not before
<Xanadu> morgs: what's gonna be on the agenda?
<morgs> Xanadu: Anything you like... contribute to the wiki page (well I suppose we will have to prioritise...)
<Xanadu> cool I'll give it some thought
<morgs> Jono Bacon - Ubuntu Community Manager - will come if he can, to talk about the vision for LoCoTeams.
<Xanadu> cool
<Xanadu> maybe we should try get bdfl in here too
<morgs> Cool idea.
<Xanadu> i mean geographically this is his user group ;)
<morgs> Xanadu: so who are you...?
<morgs> :-)
<Xanadu> Jason Norwood-Young
<highvoltage> Xanadu: that would be ubuntu-uk ;)
<Xanadu> www.tectonic.co.za until recently
<Xanadu> highvoltage: well then his mom's user group
<Xanadu> ;)
<highvoltage> Xanadu: his mom does actually use ubuntu
<highvoltage> Xanadu: I've helped her out quite a few times :)
<Xanadu> so does mine
<highvoltage> Xanadu: yeah!? well my grandmother uses opensuse!!!!!!
<morgs> I'm sure he feels some affiliation... given that he wore our flag up there and all...
<highvoltage> (really)
<morgs> lol
<Xanadu> highvoltage: I've seen you on IRC lately... can't remember where
<Vhata> Rosebud.
<highvoltage> Xanadu: aaah, I think I might have been on IRC recently, so that is a possibility
* highvoltage goes to the shop for some juice
<Xanadu> lol
* morgs plays with gaim plugins
<Charl> wow this channel is really growing! coolness!
<Charl> must be related to the recent activity on the mailing list
<Xanadu> yeah I read the mails, visited the wiki then came here
<morgs> I think we have lots of people on the mailing list, despite the historic inactivity...
<Xanadu> most of the mails have been break/fix requests...
<Charl> morgs: yeah not too many people bother with IRC
<Xanadu> not sure that's the best use of the local mailing list because there are so many resources out there
<Vhata> that's not true, Charl
<Xanadu> who (apart from Morgs) is on clug?
<morgs> Not too many people bothered with #ubuntu-za since nothing ever happened here - but in the last couple of days we've had loads of ppl
<Vhata> Xanadu: highvoltage and linuxboy and I
<Xanadu> the way clug organises events and stuff is really impressive - creates a real feeling of community
<morgs> Xanadu: yes, this is somewhere between that and the global Ubuntu community. We shouldn't try to duplicate either...
<Xanadu> yeah morgs but at the same time I keep feeling that ubuntu-za needs a kick-start - maybe this IRC meeting will do it
<morgs> Yes I'm hoping...
<Vhata> seriously, why was it scheduled for January 14th, 2032?
<Xanadu> lol really?
<morgs> Jan *15th* Vhata!
<Vhata> whoops
<morgs> 2007
<Vhata> my bad.
<morgs> ;-)
<Xanadu> I think it'll be cool to have an earlier meeting
<morgs> I think a week or two would be better
<Xanadu> even if it's not a *major* meeting - just a meet&greet
<morgs> Especially for an IRC meeting...
<Vhata> man, we could have a meeting every three days
<Vhata> it's not a big thing
<Vhata> we don't need to book a venue
<Vhata> or organise clean-up staff
<Xanadu> hey we're having one now...
<morgs> ctpug is a local python user group - problem is they made the bar so high for the first meeting - umpteen guest speakers etc that it's hard to have follow ups in the same league...
<morgs> I couldn't make the first meeting so I've missed 100% of the events
<Xanadu> there are 7 ppl here - about as many as usually contribute to the list ;)
<morgs> Ah, but they are (to some extent) a different 7 people.
<Xanadu> yup
<morgs> And the 3 people on the forum are again (possibly) different again - so hard keeping track of the nicks
<morgs> ;-)
<Xanadu> still, since we're all here I think we should maybe try think of an item or two for the agenda for whenever the meeting is
<morgs> Some ideas:
<morgs> * How to contribute to Ubuntu
<morgs> * Some success stories (who's using Ubuntu seriously)
<morgs> * A better wiki theme please!
<morgs> * Some wiki content (that doesn't duplicate wiki.u.c)
<morgs> * ...
<Xanadu> * Purpose of Ubuntu-ZA
<Xanadu> * What you can do to help
<Xanadu> * South African Ubuntu resources and services (commercial and non-commercial)
<morgs> Yes - we are not a lug...
<morgs> There's a lot of fairly new LoCo stuff on wiki.ubuntu.com which helps people to understand what it's all about
<morgs> If you have registered, please add that to the wiki
<morgs> http://www.ubuntu-za.org/Wiki/LoCoMeetings/Agenda15Jan
<morgs> Xanadu: btw what are you doing since tectonic?
<Xanadu> I'm doing some PHP development for a cellphone content provider
<Xanadu> some=lots ;)
<Xanadu> need money to pay for my wedding and Tectonic is not a commercial enterprise
<morgs> :-)
<Xanadu> as soon as it's done and I have some time I'll go back to writing for Tectonic but won't be as involved
<Xanadu> Alastair is also not doing as much writing at the moment because he also took a job
<Xanadu> so I apologise to all the Tectonic fans for low content over the last two months
<morgs> Ah well,
<morgs> got to go - chat again soon!
<Xanadu> ciao morgs
*** morgs is now known as morgs|away
<Seeker_952> What about web 2.0?
<Xanadu> Seeker_953: as a topic?
<Seeker_952> Sorry, I mean for tectonic.
<Xanadu> you mean more user input for content?
<Seeker_952> yes
<Xanadu> it's a complicated one - we do have a forum but we've decided to stick to a more traditional news style for a couple of reasons
<Xanadu> firstly there are plenty of other resources that rely on user contributions, especially in the OSS space
<Seeker_952> Well thats understandable
<Xanadu> secondly Alastair and I are both professional journos with over 20 years experience between us, and we'd prefer to create a reliable, authoritative resource
<highvoltage> Xanadu: we'll probably to translatathons as part as ubuntu-za too
<highvoltage> I think it might even be one of our main functions in the new year,
<Xanadu> highvoltage that's a good idea
<Xanadu> you guys should try and get translate.org involved in that too
<highvoltage> we'll soon be selling home linux systems, and we'll be including all the local translations in our local ubuntu distribution.
<Xanadu> now that would be cool
<highvoltage> Xanadu: they are, we're a partner of translate.org.za
<highvoltage> Xanadu: and our staff is on the translate board
<Xanadu> cool it'll be a major boon to get ubuntu fully translated
<Xanadu> Impi Linux will love you forever ;)
<Xanadu> are there any Impi guys here?
<highvoltage> haha
<highvoltage> no.
<highvoltage> francis is often on freenode.
<highvoltage> ross too.
<highvoltage> but they usually just join quickly for a question.
<Xanadu> what's ross' nick?
<highvoltage> uhm, can't remember. It's been several months since I've seen him on IRC, check his launchpad page.
<highvoltage> francis is fvivier
<Xanadu> highvoltage: who are you?
<highvoltage> Xanadu: Jonathan Carter
<highvoltage> we need a Spinach in here.
<Xanadu> a Spinach?
<highvoltage> hmmm... I think I may have a solution
<highvoltage> Xanadu: like our bot on CLUG
<Xanadu> I haven't seen it - it a kinda whois bot?
<Xanadu> I gotta get some work done
<Xanadu> l8r ppl
<highvoltage> edubuntugirl: highvoltage
<edubuntugirl> highvoltage is in fact, a bot.
<highvoltage> *sigh*
<highvoltage> edubuntugirl: no, highvoltage is Jonathan Carter
<edubuntugirl> highvoltage: k
<Vhata> edubuntugirl: hi
<edubuntugirl> hoezit, Vhata!
<Circus-Killer> g'd evening all
