<popey> Morning ratfans!
<AndyR> good morning
<mrben> morning all
<LoudMouthMan> hello
<sheepeatingtaz> 'lo mrben
<popey> moo
<sheepeatingtaz> popey, did the *generic kernel sort you out last night?
<popey> I can't use the generic kernel because the nvidia driver isn't available for that yet
<sheepeatingtaz> ah. Bummer.
<popey> it's okay, to be expected on feisty
<sheepeatingtaz> Oh yeah, I forgot you had gone up already :)
<popey> yeah :S
<popey> still having qemu working is good news
<popey> welcome back jono
<jono> thanks popey
<popey> how did your presentation(s) go?
<chaddy> morning all
<popey> Indeed it is
<chaddy> I've always been observant that way
<popey> +1 gold star for chaddy
<chaddy> ;-þ
<GazzaK> heeh
<LoudMouthMan> yeah but who is the all that people keep greeting , i cant find their nickname in the list !
<chaddy> it's like the any key
<LoudMouthMan> i have had an anykeyonce
<chaddy> one of those sun keyboards with the blank key?
<LoudMouthMan> oooh i ve got lots of those
<LoudMouthMan> but its a long blank key at the bottom and its a bit wid frankly
<popey> aaargh stereo!
<butlershouse> yeah zen just dropped packets
<popey> :(
* butlershouse gives loudmouthman a kicking
<butlershouse> my connections just bounced in under 5 seconds but long enough for hamachi, xchat and ff to get upset.
<butlershouse> nice to see the Tshirt now at £50.00 I do hope Jono and co recovered it from the States okay.
* gord waves a merry morning to the uk-ubuntu'ers
<jono> butlershouse, recovered, but still very tired, particularly will rolling out the Jokosher release last night
<butlershouse> coor, youth of today and all that <grin>
<butlershouse> now . should I be getting Dobbo to use Jokosher for recording his podcast thing.
<jono> heh
<jono> two weeks of non stop working and drinking takes its toll
* butlershouse nows nothing about audio whatsoever!
<butlershouse> ha, thats New years for us scotsmen
<butlershouse> mind you thats any good party if you plan it right.
<dsas> morning all
<popey> jono: will feisty have the necessary gstreamer stuff for jokosher do you think?
<popey> or will it still be a cvs jobbie?
<jono> popey, yes indeed
<popey> cool
* popey is running feisty :)
* butlershouse listening to current lugradio.
<jono> I don't think it has the packages yet as we are waiting for a new gstreamer release
<popey> I am just about to leave to get on the train to work, will listen to it then
<popey> syre
<popey> sure even
*** butlershouse is now known as LoudMouthMan
<LoudMouthMan> clear
<LoudMouthMan> it is I !
<LoudMouthMan> I am BACK
* popey goes to work :(
<popey> bah
<popey> have to get a taxi to the choo choo station because the car park will be full
<LoudMouthMan> not going to walk it ?
<selinuxium_> hi all :)
<gord> just park on top of another car, they won't mind if the car park is full im sure
<selinuxium_> Since upgrading to EDGY my Atheros AR5212 Netgear WiFi card ahs stopped working. I have installed the restricted modules for the kernel and it still doesn't work. it used to in Dapper. Any ideas?
<gord> tried yelling at it?
<selinuxium_> gord: yep! :p
<gord> hrmm, well that's my knowledge of wifi cards exhausted, I really need to jump on the bandwagon and get one one day
<selinuxium_> gord: lol :)
<chaddy> selinuxium_: this might point you in the right direction http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=290929&highlight=AR5212+edgy
<selinuxium_> cheers chaddy. I'll take a look.
<chaddy> it's not quite a howto...
<selinuxium_> no worries i will read more at madwifi.org :)
<mrben> selinuxium_: I think the same may have happened to my wifi
<gord> there is something about people having loud, rubbish, techno-popish music blaring out of their car on a monday morning that makes me want to buy a shotgun...
<selinuxium_> mrben: I will let you know how get on! :)
<mrben> tx
<mrben> selinuxium_: looks like it's a problem with WAP
<mrben> WEP*
<mrben> http://madwifi.org/ticket/1016
<mrben> selinuxium_: from what I can tell, the madwifi-ng drivers are not yet available in edgy, and this may be the problem
<selinuxium_> ok, but if i compile madwifi from source... I will give it a go anyway! Here's hoping..
<mrben> do a search for 'edgy' on the madwifi site, and you'll get some pointers ;)
* mrben avoids compiling from source as much as possible
<dsas> if it's not in the repos, it doesn't exist!
<gord> the pixey elves create our new software every six months and magically add it to the repos, sometimes they take software away again. at least, so Iv been lead to believe
<popey> ola
<gord> sure is cold today
<LoudMouthMan> yep, time to get the wheat inta storage id be saying.
* gord fills his cupboards with weetabix
<TankEnMate> Any Ubuntu-UK meetings in .nr ?
<GazzaK> .nr?
<GazzaK> where is that?
<TankEnMate> northern ireland
<chaddy> lo TankEnMate
<TankEnMate> the place most of the rest of the uk ignores :)
<TankEnMate> heya chaddy
<GazzaK> thats only 'cos they are scared of you
<chaddy> I haven't heard tell of any in Scotland, yet, either
<TankEnMate> ahhh
<chaddy> presumably they are scared of all us Celtic types
<GazzaK> nor essex (but we are close to London I suppose)
<GazzaK> celtic types are scary, got skirts and everything :-)
<TankEnMate> I help run the Belfast LUG and I fugured since I'm making money from Ubuntu support I should really help drive things around here
<TankEnMate> ach ya wee dafty!
<GazzaK> any group of blokes who run around in skirts in cold weather are scary
* GazzaK is 3/4 scottish btw
<chaddy> how did you get into making money out of Ubuntu support, TankEnMate? it's something I'd like to get into, basically just looking for enough of an income to cover my expenses
<TankEnMate> I used to be an IT consultant in .au, I just talked to people and they would say.. I have a problem, and I woudl say I can fix it for you.. £250 / hour (j/k)
<TankEnMate> where ya live chaddy?
<chaddy> Aberdeen
<TankEnMate> mmmm chilly!
<chaddy> very
<popey> hello TankEnMate
<TankEnMate> but then Belfast isn't exactly much warmer...
<TankEnMate> heya popey
* popey notes belfast.lug.org.uk is still a holding page
<popey> do you have a "proper" site?
<TankEnMate> ahh i don't think it has ever been used..
<popey> ahh
<TankEnMate> some polish / czech guy tried tp set up a LUG here in Belfast before talking to anyone.. got the address registered et al.. there was a big stoush about it a few years ago..
<TankEnMate> then the BLUG sort of imploded.. was restarted again about a year ago..
<TankEnMate> in fact there are more regular perl mongers in belfast than bluggers :)
<TankEnMate> probably the most "proper" site is the Wiki we set up for the FOSS means business meeting, when we had Stallman and Perens over..
<grifferz> if there is an alternate / competing one then that should be listed too..
<TankEnMate> http://foss-means-business.org/Home
<TankEnMate> We just lost our fearless leader a few days ago.. he got a job offer from Goldman Sachs in Tokyo.. so we are still in a transition period..
<TankEnMate> The BLUG that is..
<TankEnMate> He is still around in email (spirit) but not in the flesh
<TankEnMate> Is there anyone I should talk to to get the ni chapter (or w/e it is called) up and running?
<chaddy> popey is big in the lug scene, but you're probably as well just to go to lug.org.uk and having a nosey at what services are available
<chaddy> s/having/have
<TankEnMate> i wasn't thinking so much the LUG side of things.. more the LoCo side of things..
<chaddy> ah, sorry
<popey> chaddy: grifferz is a lug.org.uk admin - he can sort this from the lug.org.uk side
<chaddy> I'd post to the mailing list, say where you are and what you want to do
<popey> I just have a big mouth
<popey> (not as big as niks though)
<TankEnMate> I suspect the LUG will proceed just fine.. we have a few insiders in some trade bodies around here, so thats going to be ok.
<chaddy> we love you for it, though, popey
<popey> well it might be nice to have a home page so people can find you
<TankEnMate> ack.. we should get it organised..
<TankEnMate> the uni's around here are alomost vehemently against linux..
<popey> !
<popey> what are they pro then? Slowlaris or other Unix vendors?
<popey> please don't say M$?
<TankEnMate> so there isn't much exposure from that.. its really only physicits who get into linux around here (academically anyway)
<TankEnMate> M$ wh0res to the hilt I'm ashamed to say...
<chaddy> sad for them
<TankEnMate> the uni's in ni teach VB :O
<popey> is it the same in RoI?
<TankEnMate> if you are particularly gifted they might let you touch Visual Studio / .Net / C#
<TankEnMate> popey: this is the reason i feel there should be a NI LoCo :)
<TankEnMate> RoI is similar, but some places in RoI are a bit better
<sheepeatingtaz> popey: Hull Uni is the same, unfortunatly
<TankEnMate> but NI is completely sold out.. (in uni's anyway)
<TankEnMate> the two biggest uni's in NI, Queens Uni Belfast and Ulster Uni, are firm believers in teach them proprietry tools only, they don't really need to understand how it works
<TankEnMate> its a shame.. I am hoping to change that somewhat..
<TankEnMate> I was hoping to teach some of the kids at my son's local school how to build a 8 bit CPU out of 74 series TTL chips
<TankEnMate> aka how to build a pdp8
<chaddy> kewl
<TankEnMate> wire wrapping and all
<TankEnMate> start them out on a simple 4 bit calculator and go from there..
<Jamesrose> G'afternoon all
<anti-net_> hey Jamesrose
<Jamesrose> Hows it going?
<anti-net_> not to bad, yourself?
<Jamesrose> Yeah, im good. Just having a cuppa
<popey> hellooooooooooooooo!
<anti-net_> hi
<anti-net_> how are you popey ?
<popey> tickety boo
<dsas> cool, guess what made the fridge frontpage - http://fridge.ubuntu.com/
<dsas> PriceChild, or some other forums type, maybe it would be a good idea to post about the charity auction too
<dsas> post on the forums that is. Lets see what money we can raise
<PriceChild> Hi
<dsas> PriceChild: Do people on the forums keep in touch with the fridge? Just wondering whether or not it's worth pimping the t-shirt charity auction on there?
<dsas> PriceChild: I have you in my head as one of the admins over there, excuse me if I'm wrong
<dsas> it looks like "Ubuntu Cafe" is the right place actually, I'll do it once I've showered and ate tea if no-one else has :)
<PriceChild> one second
<PriceChild> back sorry was on phone
<PriceChild> I'm a moderator, not an admin... but still part of the staff team :)
<PriceChild> Anyway... Articles on the fridge do have a little discussion forum on the boards: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=122
<PriceChild> So i'm sure a few people are aware of it
<PriceChild> but not many
<PriceChild> I've only just started reading planet
<PriceChild> I check out fridge occasionally
<PriceChild> And if i'm staff and do it this little... I couldn't say much for everyone else
*** chaddy_ is now known as chaddy
<dsas> PriceChild: Oh, cool. I thought they'd stopped doing that or something, there used to be a little "discuss this thread on the forums!" link at the bottom of each fridge post.
<PriceChild> nope still there on UForums front page :)
<dsas> wow, the tee is up to £75
<SirGad> hi there. Newbie here with some questions about setting up Squid on Ubuntu.
<chaddy> lo SirGad
<SirGad> hey.
<chaddy> ask away
<SirGad> cheers.
<chaddy> I, personally, know little of these things, but someone else will I'm sure
<SirGad> Well, I've kind of reached the end of my knowledge on the whole "setting up a proxy server" front.
<SirGad> i have an old PC running Ubuntu 6.10 Server.
<SirGad> It has a CD-ROM, a 3GB IDE HDD and two 10/100 Ethernet cards.
<SirGad> I've installed Squid using apt-get, but now i'm struggling to understand how I get my Apple laptop accessing the internet through Squid on the server.
<SirGad> I have a cable modem from Telewest. I've set up eth0 as my internet interface.
<SirGad> That's about the limit to my abilities! :-)
<SirGad> Can anyone walk me through the next stage?
<SirGad> Thanx!
<LoudMouthMan> Evening al .
<LoudMouthMan> all rather
<SirGad> Newbie says, "hi".
<LoudMouthMan> Bllmaey £75.00 for the TShirt! I better contact canonical tommorow and get it back ! <Grin>
<chaddy> http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch32_:_Controlling_Web_Access_with_Squid <-- SirGad
<chaddy> might help, looks quite well put together
<LoudMouthMan> oooh squid. and a detail far better than my wiki <grin>
<SirGad> ahh. thank you. at first glance looks good!
<LoudMouthMan> one notices Ade released his secret sauce today as well.
<dsas> bald sauce?
<LoudMouthMan> bald wiki sauce at that
<SirGad> how do I make Squid start automatically when log in at a non-root level?
<dsas> SirGad: You probably need an init file, so that it starts at boot, personally I know nothing about squid though...
<dsas> SirGad: I'd be surprised if it didn't come with one.
<LoudMouthMan> SirGad, its a deamon like samba and the like so it just runs installed and live on a port in the background !
<LoudMouthMan> /etc/init.d/squid .
<dsas> SirGad: You should have a /etc/init.d/squid file
<dsas> bah, beaten by the loudmouth!
<SirGad> Ta. hang on, I'll boot the PC and check…
<SirGad> hey, tell you what, here's a more general question: is there any way to disconnect the fan on the PC's PSU? Is that wise? There's very little happening in this PC - a CD-ROM (which will be removed as soon as this server is done), 2 NICs and a video card (also to be removed when the server's done - if the BIOS permits).
<SirGad> It'll only be a proxy for me, no-one else, so the PC want exactly be highly burdened.
<SirGad> It's a noise thing.
<dsas> I guess it's not wise...You can buy special quietened PSUs, not sure how good they are though.
<SirGad> cheers dsas. Guess I'll leave it just now.
<SirGad> Okay, I've checked, and yes I do have the file you refer to.
<SirGad> I'll vim it
<dsas> SirGad: you can use that file to restart squid, just do sudo /etc/init.d/squid restart (or start, or stop, depending)
<SirGad> ah. so what you're saying is that, cos that file's in the /etc/init.d directory, Squid's already launching at login?
<SirGad> (yes, you're most certainly talking to a Ubuntu newbie)
<dsas> well, assuming there's a symlink (shortcut) from the init file to /etc/rc2.d/squid, then yes
<dsas> or Sxxsquid even
<dsas> the shortcut should be put there automagically when you installed the package.
<SirGad> yup, I've just confirmed it was running at boot.
<SirGad> cool
<SirGad> Okay, next question - starter for 10!
<SirGad> If i hook my iBook to eth1, and the internet to eth0, on the server, and configure the iBook to use the proxy over the appropriate port, should that be me ready to go? Will Squid do the rest?
<LoudMouthMan> SirGad, quick question for you ? where are you based , and are you familiar with Linux User Groups, I think it would be a shame to be getting smoe great answers here and not back it up with some follow up at LUG.
<LoudMouthMan> Sirgad providing your redirect port 80 requests on eth1 to the local squid port on the server it should .
<LoudMouthMan> its called transparent proxy and you need to set the ibook to use the IP address of the eth1 as def gateway.
<SirGad> hi LoudMouthMan. I'm on the edlug mailing list at the mo', but it's quite slow.
<LoudMouthMan> this also requires some dhcp or IP knowledge.
<SirGad> I've had some advice but it's a bit sparse.
<LoudMouthMan> Ah Ha,hmm guys do we fancy making our lug affiliations on the wiki ?
<SirGad> ah yes, IP and dhcp knowledge. Now I'm in trouble.
<LoudMouthMan> hmm so up north then .
<SirGad> yup, the chilly north.
<SirGad> fingers are losing flexibility as i speak!
<LoudMouthMan> Sirgad., was the link useful and did you get a chance to read it , would it be helpful to have further links ?
<LoudMouthMan> well since i come from Elgin we can talk cold later <grin>
<LoudMouthMan> hey Jono... .LoudHoward ! harumph someones gonna get a kicking !
<SirGad> Yeah I checked out the link, but it didn't cover what I needed right now.
<SirGad> Though it's talk of authentication is something that will come in useful later.
<LoudMouthMan> okay how about this .http://butlershouse.co.uk/bin/view/Main/WebProxy
<SirGad> *Command-Click*
<LoudMouthMan> it covers installing squid and configuring iptables and transparent proxies and acl and time date acl as well as allow lists and deny lists .
<LoudMouthMan> oooh ive just let out my own secret sauce eh !
<LoudMouthMan> oh dear . hope I didnt scare off Jon
<SirGad> Okay, I guess I should explain the actions I've taken so far:
<SirGad> Added following lines to /etc/network/interfaces:
<SirGad> auto eth0
<SirGad> iface eth0 inet dhcp
<SirGad> Added the following information to the squid.conf file:
<SirGad> http_port 192.168.1.x:3128
<SirGad> ftp_user foo@foo.com
<SirGad> Added the following lines to ~/squid/etc/squid.conf:
<SirGad> Added this to the bottom of the ACL section of the file:
<SirGad> acl foo src 192.168.1.x
<SirGad> Added this to the top of the http_access section of the file:
<SirGad> http_access allow foo
<SirGad> Gave the Squid server a hostname by adding the following value to squid.conf:
<SirGad> visible_hostname foo
<SirGad> I think what you said about setting up eth1 is the step I need to take now, LoudMouthMan
<darich> hey all
<dsas> hey darich
<darich> aaah it's good to get home.... a day using windows does my head in
<LoudMouthMan> Sirgad, indeed. though you know what. this does lead to a possible interesting use for our wikis..
<LoudMouthMan> it wouldbe ideal to get samlpe config files that work up there along with notes and thoughts. and then link back to UKTeam wii as relevant. well its a thought ,... here come the tenhundred reasons why its a bad idea <grin>
<LoudMouthMan> but im glad we can help.
<dsas> It's help written in english, lets put it on the ubuntu documentation wiki at http://help.ubuntu.com/community, we can help the wider english speaking populace better this way
<dsas> <grin>
<dsas> 999 reasons to go *thinks*
<LoudMouthMan> hahaha okay so its not a bad idea then 100 reason to go again !
<SirGad> okay dokay, the heating's on, my brain should start functioning a little more efficiently now. 'specially between that and guzzling some nice hot chicken soup. Don't know about anyone else, but the wind's raging like a SOB here.
<LoudMouthMan> so lets.. I dunno .. start thinking about helping the SirGads of this world in a way that helps us help others later and which helps sirgad contribute as Sirgad learns. and sorry Sirgad for speaking inthird person.
*** tsmithe is now known as ninja-t
<SirGad> np :-)
<SirGad> Right, I'm back on track. The thing that scuppered me when i last tried to set up squid was getting a static IP address for my iBook's proxy settings. I guess that's what I need help with now. Any ideas?
<LoudMouthMan> because what we want to avoid is duplication of support efforts whilst supporting people and being helpful.
<LoudMouthMan> um Sirgad, whats your outward facing IP address of your ubuntu box ?
<LoudMouthMan> assuming you have eth0 and eth1
<SirGad> currently nothing. it's not hooked up to the internet - though it's set for dhcp when I am. does that help?
<SirGad> BTW, I'll happily collate my experience setting up Squid with my iBook for any future wiki.
<LoudMouthMan> your IP addresses fro eth1 and your ibook can just be something likr 192.168.199.1 for eth1 adn 192.168.199.2 for the ibook. you then set the def gw to 192.68.199.1 and the proxy to the same address. but to be honest if you transparenrt proxy eth1 then you dont need to do anything alse since all things port 80 will go via squid. you then need to do forwarding and NAT.
<LoudMouthMan> Sirgad, excellent thats 100% of what the community is about .
<SirGad> I don't have transparent proxy set up.
<LoudMouthMan> hmmm okay Sirgad do you have Sykpe set up ?
<SirGad> nope. I'm on babble, if it helps.
<LoudMouthMan> hahh nope ive not heard of that one .. .
<LoudMouthMan> okay I was going to suggest you get my 1 hour Ubuntu Buddy support time this week. and I would walk you through the steps rather than harass the channel .. unless the channel want to know <grin>
<SirGad> ahh, oops, am I breaching protocol a wee bit? :-)
<LoudMouthMan> nah .. not at alll .. its me whose breaching
<LoudMouthMan> im having a wayy to long winded conversation re support when we could be doing it in a queiter environment
<LoudMouthMan> New people cant break rules... only old foggies and experienced members <Grin>
<LoudMouthMan> im the old variety
<SirGad> hmm, are you on MSN or AIM?
<LoudMouthMan> and besides when popey returns and broadcasts his new screencast it will be missed <grin.
<LoudMouthMan> um neither .. but im on skype : thebutlershouse
<LoudMouthMan> and im on googletalk : butlershouse
<LoudMouthMan> besides I can cut and paste the settings direct to you which would be much easier .. hang on a bit.
<SirGad> Ahh, googletalk. I can access that using a web-based messenger right?
<LoudMouthMan> yes I believe so .
<SirGad> give me two secs...
<LoudMouthMan> Id like to take time to answer your query and do it outside here so we dont flood thechannel with stuff and i am going to be online to do that properly at8.30 tonight if ithelps.
<LoudMouthMan> dsas , can you update the wiki on the main channel with something about support documentation and community links thingy for me and I will drop anythingn extra useful when I can .
<LoudMouthMan> oh and where do I regiser the Karma for helping SirG then ?
<LoudMouthMan> or maybe SirGad and I should solve it and then register the problem and I can resolve it their and we can both learn about the support channels other than here<Grin>
<SirGad> Hi,
<SirGad> okay, just set up Adium to use Googletalk. My GoogleTalk username is:
<SirGad> fakesexnoises@googlemail.com
<SirGad> you don't seem to be online right now, is that right?
<SirGad> ah, you'll be online at 8.30pm?
<LoudMouthMan> yes . hahha .. thats it !
<LoudMouthMan> ive got to clear up kitchen and make sure little one is settled before I bugger off doing Ubuntu things <Grin>
<SirGad> okay-dokey! I'll leave Adium logged in, and look forward to chatting to you around 8.30pm-ish.
<SirGad> Thanks a bunch!
<LoudMouthMan> hehe okay .. meanwhile kick back and introduce your self a little more to the channel, if youve not already, and ifyou find edlug to be quite then im sure neuro_ has a list of more robust active lugs or speak to popey or grifferz about enlivening ( its a word ) your local LUG .
<popey> eeeeeeeeeeeee ratfans!
<LoudMouthMan> there he is ..
<LoudMouthMan> its like rumplestiltskin but without the bloody weaving of gold.
<popey> I really need to catch up with ze podcasts
<popey> er
<popey> screencasts
<popey> :)
<chaddy> you're in edinburgh, then, SirGad
<chaddy> ?
<SirGad> yup.
<chaddy> scotlug is good, as is #scotlug
<chaddy> quite a few people make it through from edinburgh each month
<neuro_> LoudMouthMan: i have a list of active lugs? :0
<neuro_> :0
<neuro_> fsck!
* neuro_ larts the shift key
<chaddy> I'm in aberdeen so I only make it down for meets intermitently
<SirGad> ah, scotlug? *looks at homepage* LOL. Annual trip to the Paisley Beer Festival?
<SirGad> Sounds like a good club! :-)
<chaddy> aye, if you like beer you're well in
<SirGad> you can't beat a decent real ale.
<neuro_> next meeting is next thursday iirc
<neuro_> i was trying to figure it out in the car home
<chaddy> thursday after neuro_
<neuro_> this thurs is the 23rd, so next thurs is the 30th, last of the month, so it's right
<chaddy> you always get mixed up when it's the last day of the month
<neuro_> i know
<neuro_> i'm terrible for it
<chaddy> how's the job hunt coming?
* chaddy got sacked today XD
<neuro_> :(
<SirGad> LOL, I just saw the FitLUG link at the bottom of the ScotLUG homepage and thought it was a link to an Aberdonian chapter. LOL
<neuro_> i started my new job today :0
<chaddy> yay
<chaddy> who with?
<neuro_> chaddy: www.csl.co.uk
<LoudMouthMan> neuro_ if HLR was anything to go by or am I messingn up the voices in my head.
<neuro_> LoudMouthMan: don't think so
<LoudMouthMan> I have a real hard time distingusiing voices in podcasts to be honest.
<LoudMouthMan> twits okay because Leo and John C are reall clear but UK podcasts.. i still cant work out who is talking in most ofthem jsut that they are talking .
<dsas> LoudMouthMan: Karma is only tracked for support requests in the support tracker. The souls who help out on -users and IRC go unthanked ;)
<LoudMouthMan> ahhh that might be why a few may be concerned then . no public credit . .hmm maybe i dont mind so much then .
<chaddy> neuro_'s is the only voice I recognize, but then I suppose that could be to do with him being the only one I've properly met in real life...
<LoudMouthMan> Actually I personally dislike the word karma since it could be to me offensive if I wast so budhist about it <grin>
<dsas> pfft, you might not get a bunch of numbers next to your name, but when you're visibly helping out in public people notice.
<constrictor> hey just joined this channel and everyone's talking about podcasts where do i get them?
<chaddy> though, actually, I'm starting to develop an ear for xalior
<dsas> constrictor: lugradio.org is one
<neuro_> constrictor: lugradio from http://lugradio.org/
<neuro_> hashlugradio from http://planet.lugradio.org/hashlugradio/
<constrictor> brill
<LoudMouthMan> dsas .. heheh quite but when you can do it and its not visible and its not counted and you do it because you can , thats when I feel the most reward. but its hard to define i guess. hence karma.
<neuro_> twit from http://twit.tv/
<LoudMouthMan> I loved it once when a friend told me she won an award for being the most spiritual person at a "fest" she went to .
<binary2k2> constrictor: LinuxActioShow http://www.linuxactionshow.com/ :P
<neuro_> the linux link tech show: http://www.tllts.org/
<constrictor> pushing feeds to rythmbox now
<LoudMouthMan> well constrictor if you download bashpodder you can get a whole bunch usually preloaded . <gdrlf>
<neuro_> novell openaudio: http://www.novell.com/openaudio/ hosted by the internet's Ted Haeger
<LoudMouthMan> Ahh yes isnt that tobe rebranded MS Novel Abit Open Audioi

<LoudMouthMan> constrictor. no .. sorry mate bashpodder is a bash shell which just runs a series of small appliactions to grab and process RSS feeds
<constrictor> right
<LoudMouthMan> but thanks to popeys actions lugradio now behaves with it again .
<LoudMouthMan> bashpodder is what you run when you are console/text retentive like me.

<chaddy> don't *know* they work, but thelinuxshop seems a fair bet
<LoudMouthMan> okay heres one for the IP ninjas.. I know I cant use 255 in an address. but really why is it okay to use 192.168.0.1 ?
<binary2k2> LoudMouthMan: why wouldn't it be? you can't use 192.168.0.0, but 192.168.0.1 is ok
<LoudMouthMan> yeah I just wondered why using Zeros was okay in IP addresses for interfaces.. its a part of IP that ive settled on accepting but still bridle at when i re read the documetation.
<dsas> assuming a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 192.168.0 refers to the network, and .1 is the first host in that network
<LoudMouthMan> sure .. but in the case of 192.168.0.X there was a time long ago when VNET under windows would balk and die because it treated the 0 as a router address and stacked the routes for everything ..
<binary2k2> try understanding IPv6 address format and stay sane, I dare ya
<LoudMouthMan> binary2k2.. that sounds like a drinking game to me .. Id rather not <grin>
<dsas> VNET was buggy?

<Seeker`> heh
<dsas> somewhere in the region of 12-15k probably.
<Seeker`> something like that
<Seeker`> where did you do your placement?
<dsas> Seeker`: britannia building society
<dsas> the UKs second biggest mutual!
<Seeker`> cool
<Seeker`> what did you do there?
<dsas> worked in the technical services department - unix sys admin and database admin mostly, with a sprinkling of middleware stuff + overnight batch stuff
<dsas> plus developing the unix sys admin website and parts of the database teams.
<Seeker`> nice
<Seeker`> i'm doing web development atm
<Seeker`> and will hopefully be doing mobile development after christmas
<dsas> Seeker`: Cool,
<dsas> Seeker`: mobile development as in wap? or software?
<Seeker`> software
<Seeker`> probably for symbian based phones
<dsas> Seeker`: what software do vodafone create for mobiles? I assume most of it is shipped by the manufacturer
<Seeker`> they dont really atm
<Seeker`> Vodafone live is done by vodafone
<Seeker`> i'm working in R&D
<Seeker`> so i'm going to be looking at what sort of services we could provide
<dsas> Seeker`: That sounds interesting
<Seeker`> yep, it should be
<Seeker`> but it gets a bit repetitive doing the stuff i'm doing atm
<Seeker`> so i've decided to start hanging around ubuntu places to see if i can learn something abotu that
<dsas> Seeker`: Cool, if you're looking for technical stuff you probably want to join #ubuntu-motu and #ubuntu-devel if you haven't already
<dsas> Seeker`: May also be worth keeping an eye out for some of the meeting that take place in #ubuntu-meeting too
<Seeker`> ty

<Seeker`> cool
<dsas> Seeker`: magical incantations mostly. I'm not sure what there is to explain, or how to start explaining, but if you have any questions, I (or others) may be able to help
<Seeker`> thanks
<dsas> Seeker`: I assume you're doing CS too?
<dsas> one of my neighbours has 19 computers connected to his router :)
<dsas> if I knew who it was i'd go and tell them.
<Seeker`> yeah, CS here too
<Seeker`> hmm
<Seeker`> do you think they are all his computers?
<Seeker`> or does he have an open access point in the middle of a block of flats?
<Seeker`> :P
<andy101> that could actually be a good way to steal password for non-encrypted sites
<andy101> set up an open wifi, hook up wireshark or ethereal, grep for the word 'password' (of course this is illegal so don't do it)
<dsas> Seeker`: I would have thought someone with 19 computers would know to lock down their dsl
<Seeker`> heh
<Seeker`> true
<Seeker`> dsas: I take it you dont have your own DSL?
<dsas> Seeker`: We do, but our router sucks.
<Seeker`> what router?
<binary2k2> maybe most of them are other neighbours like you? :P
<dsas> Seeker`: My house wifi router
<dsas> binary2k2: I think so.
<Seeker`> i mean what make/ model?
<dsas> Seeker`: ah, sorry. linksys. Can't think of the model number from the top of my head.
<Seeker`> fair enough
<Seeker`> noone i know has any luck with linksys
<Seeker`> one of my friends had one that would route, or allow wireless access
<Seeker`> but not both at the same time
<dsas> Seeker`: When I have two computers on in my room I can only get one of them to join it...
<dsas> hence using the neighbours wireless for one of them
<Seeker`> so he ended up hooking up my wired router and his wireless one to get it to work
<dsas> Seeker`: heh, I doubt I'll be buying linksys again.
