<tonyyarusso> I decided I couldn't spare the $30 of gas and 4 hours of driving time :(
<ly> I can't use xfmedia to play mp3 any more after upgrade to 6.10, any one knows what's wrong?
<ly> BTY, I am pretty sure w32codecs and libxine-extracodecs are installed
<rexbron> so who here is at the linux cafe
<rexbron> ?
<SpacePuppy> hola!!!

<Burgundavia> hey SpacePuppy
<SpacePuppy> looks like i missed the celebration day! Hope everyon had a good time
<Burgundavia> SpacePuppy: there is never a bad time to celebrate
<tonyyarusso> Urgh. Anyone have experience setting up a print server with CUPS?
* SpacePuppy says that setting up a printserver with cups is easy and then runs away.
<tonyyarusso> SpacePuppy: You're not far off. I got it set up, and it works with my machine, but I tried to get a friend to test it out, and the page that printed just said $$ instead of their file.
<tonyyarusso> I can't for the life of me figure out what would cause $$ to print instead of a file. Maybe have it not print at all, but print random characters?
<Burgundavia> tonyyarusso: what are the exact error messages?
<tonyyarusso> Burgundavia: There are none.
<Burgundavia> what does the printed page have on it?
<tonyyarusso> Burgundavia: $$, literally.
<Burgundavia> hmm, there is a known cups bug in dapper
<Burgundavia> but that isn't it
<tonyyarusso> Burgundavia: Additionally, the first $ is twice or three times as dark as the second.
<Burgundavia> hmm
<Burgundavia> check the bug reports
<tonyyarusso> Burgundavia: Will do. It worked fine with my computer both while connected to the 192.168.1 router and the 192.168.0 router, through http, but not from a remote machine somewhere else.
<Burgundavia> hmm
<tonyyarusso> Additionally, I confirmed that she could access the :631/printers page
<tonyyserver> Burgundavia: Meanwhile, do you know: should you have to input printer and driver information on each client you try to add the printer for (as is prompted for), or should you just have to give the address since the driver is all configured on the server end (what makes sense to me)?
<Burgundavia> tonyyserver: afaik, you need the driver on both machines
<tonyyserver> Burgundavia: How come?
<Burgundavia> it is cups
<tonyyserver> That's highly annoying/inefficient...
<Burgundavia> cups is highly annoying
<Burgundavia> Madpilot: you around?
<Madpilot> Burgundavia, yes
<tonyyserver> Burgundavia: 236 bugs to paw through, and none look related :(

<jacked> yawn
<bung> hack
<jacked> I wish there were more ubuntu users on the east coast. would like to throw an edgy party
<jacked> :P
<bung> brb
<jacked> and I wish I could find a way to cool down this lame-ass macbook without having OSX installed. The day I by another Mac is the day... nah, I can't even think of a hypothetical situation. Such a taint on the clan name, they are.
<jacked> by=buy
<jacked> bung: I'm assuming you have at least two connections attacked to these servers. Did you see the comment I made just before you re-joined?
<jacked> you seem to have the only non-idle nick around
<jacked> at the moment
<jacked> perhaps I spoke too soon. :P
<bung> uh
<bung> the eastcoast thing was the last i saw
<bung> edgefest whatever that is
<jacked> Jacked said: and I wish I could find a way to cool down this lame-ass macbook without having OSX installed. The day I buy another Mac is the day... nah, I can't even think of a hypothetical situation. Such a taint on the clan name, they are.
<jacked> That's my way of asking: do you know how I might go about finding a way to motivate somebody to take a look at this problem
<jacked> ?
<jacked> I've done the launchpad thing.
<bung> uhm
<jacked> serves me right for buying this junk, but not that I have it, it would be nice to be able to pick it up without getting 3rd degree burns. :P
<jacked> not=now
<bung> with OSX it does -not- heat up?
<bung> but with ubuntu it does?
<jacked> well, I figured out that if I have OSX installed, I can install the GPL'ed hack smcFanControl (or something like that -- a relatively new hack), which sets the min fan speed to a user-defined level. This setting will remain in effect when the restarting and switching into Ubuntu (if refit is used). However, without OSX installed, there is no way (that I know of) to set the min fan speed at an appropriate level
<jacked> errr... when restarting. (canNOT type today... jeesh)
<bung> hmm
<bung> is there a bios setting?
<jacked> OSX released firmware in August that cooled things down somewhat, but not enough -- especially in Ubuntu, which has always run hotter
<jacked> bios setting on an Intel mac?
<bung> i dont use a mac
<jacked> smart man
<bung> well let history judge that one
<bung> anyways
<bung> is there a bios?
<bung> hmm i wonder if powernowd can control the fan
<jacked> yeah, the problem with history is its always out of date.
<bung> have you looked around at any acpi modules or something
<bung> for fan control?
<jacked> no. no bios... well, not the old F10/F2/whatever BS
<jacked> yeah. doesn't even support thermal without a hack
<bung> sounds familiar
<bung> maybe check PowerNowd
<jacked> the mactel project has fixed out many of the issues but this one has alluded them (or slipped under the radar)
<bung> im just kinda googling about, lookin at things like http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Talk:ACPI_fan_control_script
<bung> what kind of info does lm-sensors give you out of curiousity?
<jacked> PowerNowd... will take a look... I don't think the kernel has any control over macbook fans... I think that firmware is currently in control
<bung> LoL I bet you posted this: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/52852
<jacked> heh... I posted the last two (David MacIntosh)
<bung> haha
<bung> well man, apart from lookin around, a) i dont know shit all about macs, and b) i dont really know anything about fan control
<bung> sry
<bung> gl
<jacked> thanks. I wasn't asking you to fix my problem though. :)
<jacked> was just wondering if you had suggestion on what channels I might explore... you know, for whining and bitching out it. lol
<bung> hehe
<jacked> and just to clarify... it's not that I prefer whining and bitching... hehe... it's just that I know that this one is WAY over my head.
<bung> yea I hate those
<bung> ones
<jacked> yup... if you know the shit I've done to this system to try and figure this problem out... lol. it really does seem that there is currently no semblance of support in linux (or anything portable to linux platform) that will allow control beyond the firmware level... if that makes any sense.
<bung> well
<jacked> god... my typing today really makes me look grammatically challenged. oi.
<bung> the firmware is the control right?
<bung> isnt the firmware running your fan written by mac?
<jacked> right.
<jacked> but you can usually communicate with it, right?
<bung> well thats probably the problem
<bung> the linux guys cant work with the mac firmware?
<jacked> for instance, the thermal hack from mactel told ACPI where to find sensor info
<jacked> another hack might be needed to tell it where and when and at what speed to engage the fan
<bung> *nods*
<bung> but getting the temperature, and actually telling the fan what speed to be at sounds like two much different things
<bung> to me anyways
<jacked> yes... different in that one is read-only and the other would be write (essencially)... but similar, I'm guessing, in that they are talking on the same level.
<bung> yea
<bung> oh well man
<bung> if its that bad
<bung> id get rid of it, or go back to osx =/
<jacked> OSX is cooler because the OS has the ability to communicate... and the smcFanControl hack exists because Apple went the next level and applied that commication info to their user-level scripting language. That could perhaps be reverse engineered to get the necessary information for porting the ability to the linux kernel. does that make any sense?
<bung> yea
<jacked> yeah, I'm considering getting rid of it. would/could never go back to OSX... sissy toy... such a girly little useless OS.
<jacked> lol
<bung> *g*
<jacked> ? your computer lingo is lost on me
<bung> grin
<jacked> gotchya
*** bung is now known as Bung
<Bung> i might suggest getting an asus ;)
<jacked> yeah?
<jacked> I will certainly be doing my homework, as for a kernel hardware support is concerned... and as far as avoiding companies that don't support open source
<Bung> i think they're hot with an a-w
<Bung> hehe
<Bung> but kinda pricey
<jacked> alienware... aren't they glorified dress-up dolls? Last time I looked was 5 years ago + ... and last I read was they'd been bought by a company I'm not a fan of (was it Dell? can't remember)
<Bung> yea, bought by dell
<Bung> im not a fan of the look of the alienwares
<jacked> hahahaha... just looked at the site. yup, glorified dress-up dolls.
<Bung> if i wanted some machine like that id buy a ferrari or lambourghini
<jacked> hahahaha
<Bung> and i do mean the acer/asus special models
<Bung> :P
<Bung> but no i dont want a machine like that
<Bung> does Tiede mean hot/warm/cold
<jacked> no no... buy a little civic and put lambourghini body parts on it... and neon lights under it... and wear your cap sideways.
<jacked> hehehe
<Bung> i meant the laptops silly :P
<Bung> i dont like cars
<Bung> back to my translating issue
* Bung searches for a translator online
<jacked> yeah, understood, just being foolish
<Bung> ;p
<Bung> tiede means warm
<Bung> i know chaud means hot, and uh, froid means cold
<Bung> duh LoL i coulda figured it out myself if Id thought of that first
<jacked> what are you translating, if you don't mind me asking... answer at your leisure (don't want to interupt)
<jacked> oh
<jacked> is that it?
<Bung> the label on my mattress pad I just bought, i want to wash it, but the lable is in spanish/english
<jacked> lol
<Bung> erm, spanish/french
<Bung> so i was just making sure how to wash it, hehehe
<jacked> you just about it and you want to wash it? is it second hand?
<jacked> about=bought
<Bung> its not second hand
<Bung> but its got that stiff new plastic-y feeling
<Bung> not quite stiff
<Bung> but like, you wash new sheets when you buy em, same thing
<Bung> brb 1sec
<jacked> well, except that sheets touch your body directly and mattress pads go under your sheets. rather than translating and wasting water, you may try finding a good gal to help you break it in... :P
<bung> hah
<bung> <--shy nerd loser type
<bung> that aside
<jacked> lol
<bung> its in the wash already, too late :P
<bung> sundays ftw
<jacked> well, at least now you can impress that ladies with your knowledge of french and spanish
<bung> haha
<jacked> that=the
<bung> thats what i read
<tonyyarusso> From what I can tell, go with the Spanish.
<jacked> tu es tres CHAU
<jacked> (I have no idea what I just wrote)
<bung> yuo nkow yuo cna raed wrds taht are bckarwods
<Cyprinus> that is very hot
<bung> as long as words are close, the brain fingers it out
<bung> :)
<tonyyarusso> rgiht
<Cyprinus> tu
<Cyprinus> you
<Cyprinus> oh you are very hot
<bung> you should say vous really
<jacked> yup... that was what I intended.
<bung> unless she is your g/f already
<jacked> vous êtes très chaud
<jacked> that would be proper, according to that translating bots
<jacked> however, I think I was close enough to make my jr high french teacher very proud. (i was a problem case in french-class)
<jacked> lol
<jacked> surely there are french speakers in this channel. no? a canadian channel without french would be, well, un-canadian. (Learning French is next on my must-do-before-I-die list.)
<bung> french class lol
<bung> all we did was sniff markers
<bung> >.<
<jacked> Being unilingual in today's world is like only knowing how to multiply in mathclass
<tonyyarusso> jacked: Sorry, I'm just an American semi-ex-pat. Might find all the French ones in #ubuntu-qc.
<jacked> bung: yeah, my french prof was hot, so i didn't learn much
<bung> haha
<tonyyarusso> I never took a language in elem. or high school (German, French, and Spanish all seemed too boring and commonplace). Now I'm giving Ojibway a shot in uni - 'tis interesting, but wicked hard to start completely from scratch with no cognates.
<bung> ojibway
<jacked> tonyyarusso: I'm not searching for French speakers, per se. They shouldn't go to qc if they're not from qc! (I'm in NB at the moment; we have a huge French pop'n here)
<bung> native?
<bung> * thats a native peoples language right?
<tonyyarusso> bung: Nope; just think it's interesting!
<tonyyarusso> bung: Oh, yes.
<tonyyarusso> I'm not native though.
<bung> *nods*
<bung> im partial to japanese myself
<tonyyarusso> jacked: Seems here most of the adults speak French still, but nobody my age bothered to remember it.
<bung> jacked, im from alberta, and i lived in quebec for three years no problem
<jacked> tonyyarusso: wow. that's very interesting!
<bung> big english populations in montreal and [the french side of] ottawa
<jacked> tonyyarusso: where are you?
<jacked> tonyyarusso: interesting regarding the language you're learning, that is
<jacked> bung: alberta? I'm sorry.
<jacked> no no
<jacked> kidding. hehe
<bung> hah
<tonyyarusso> jacked: In Peterborough, ON (hour and a half from Toronto), originally from St. Paul, MN (USA).
<bung> alberta owns
* bung grew up in Banff
<jacked> just playing off the dumb political mentality at the moment. hehe
* tonyyarusso avoids Alberta b/c it's too similar to his reasons for leaving the States
<bung> hehe
* jacked agrees (to a certain degree)
<jacked> although, I may end up there relatively soon
* jacked is in the process of leaving law school for a year or two
<bung> dropping out?
<bung> ;p
<jacked> dropped out. for medical reasons. started back too soon after having a surgery... doc recommended rest
<bung> ah
* jacked jack has been running a business and going to uni at the same time for... well... the duration of a BSc, Multimedia Dip, and 3/4 BA
<bung> yer nuts man
<jacked> yup
<bung> im so lazy i barely can handle 4 classes a term in my BSc
<jacked> what are you studying?
<bung> math >.<
<bung> mite change to physics tho
<bung> astrophysics
<jacked> yeah, I almost got lured by physics... fun stuff. not astrophysics though...
<jacked> errr... no... that's not correct...
<jacked> astrophysics isn't fun on an intro level
<jacked> I'm sure the more advanced stuff is awesome
<bung> i think ive had 5 bowls of cookies and cream in the last 24hrs
<jacked> how far along are you in your math degree?
<bung> 2ndyr
<jacked> you're relatively young then... or did you start late?
<bung> started late
<bung> im 22
<bung> well, i guess "late" is relative
<bung> :)
<jacked> i see. not a bad idea.
<jacked> if I could go back, i'd have waited
<bung> well
<jacked> err... minus "have"
<bung> its nice to have a better sense of whats going on
<bung> but it sucks because your poor compared to before
<bung> when i worked for a few years before, i was used to a certain lifestyle
<bung> cutting back sucks for a spoiled-in-the-sense-of middle class white born in canada
<bung> haha
<jacked> exactly. a lot of life stuff to figure out after leaving the nest... often best done when not being assessed regularly
<bung> but anyways
<jacked> true true
<jacked> that's why I kept the bus on the side. :P
<bung> the other thing is theres alot more debate about this is worthwhile
<jacked> bus=business
<bung> yea
<bung> biz :P
<jacked> (yeah, i know... i'm not cool enough for computer speak though)
<jacked> it's a curse really
<bung> lawl
<bung> :P
* jacked is oblivious
<jacked> Laughing a Whole Lot! Ha. how clever.
<bung> uh
<bung> not quite
<jacked> see what I mean? I'm just not cool.
<bung> but thats pretty good
<bung> its more of a typing like its pronounced
<jacked> well, that's what acronym finder told me
<bung> really? LoL
<jacked> yuppers
<bung> we digress
* bung hopes he has used that properly
<bung> im tired of spending hours and hours fixing gentoo stuff (altho once its setup properly its pretty easy to keep uptodate, i just reinstalled) .. .but I cant bring myself to be stuck with ubuntu package tree
<bung> i like customization
<bung> new stuff
<bung> etc
<bung> ah well, ill think about it
<jacked> really? what's wrong with the backage tree?
<bung> i like having the newest versions and stuff
<bung> :)
<bung> what can i say
<jacked> oi. that's a lot of time invested in living on the edge!
<jacked> hehe
<bung> yea it is alot of time
<bung> =/
<bung> thats why im debating it
<bung> its just that I had some problems, and its taken me a while to get a system back together again
<bung> but i was running smooth for a long time
<bung> just need to get back on it
<bung> i keep putting ubuntu on my friends comps though
<jacked> I see. a gentoo system you mean? Or
<bung> i know more then they do, but sometimes I have to ask in #ubuntu like a noob, just cuz i dont know the system
<bung> yea, gentoo
<bung> so maybe ill dual boot or something
<bung> altho i just dont forsee me using ubuntu much if i did dual boot
<jacked> gentoo would be great if I didn't have to set it up... (and, well, the other little snags that get more complicated when you have to know everything that's going on)
<bung> theres a version called Vida linux thats prepackaged in a sense
<bung> that way you dont have to spend 3 days getting stuff setup
<bung> even comes with xgl :)
<bung> still have to spend time upgrading it a bit though
<bung> its what im using now, forgot to mention
<bung> i didnt have time to do a full install, so im using theirs and upgrading what i need
<bung> :)
<bung> wouldnt it be nice if i used a period instead of the enter key? :P
<jacked> interesting... you'll have to tell me more another time. company just arrived....
<jacked> good chatting with ya
<jacked> later
<bung> ok, enjoi
<jacked> anybody around? I know metaphysical questions are kind of boring... but, well... I think bung helped me solve the meaning of life
<jacked> nobody's going to take the bait? pfft.
