<yarddog_> tritium you here?
<tritium> hi yarddog_
<tritium> I'm here now.
<tritium> What's up?
<yarddog_> hi, i know you have been hearing this, do you know an approximate time here that edgy will be released? :P
<tritium> Other than sometime tomorrow, no, I haven't really herad.
<tritium> heard even
<yarddog_> i destroyed my install, and im installing using dapper and updating, i thought if it was releasing tonight our time, i would wait, otherwise ill proceed.
<tritium> Let me see what I can find out.
<yarddog_> okay
<tritium> No idea, yarddog_
<tritium> You could always start from the RC, and update it.
<yarddog_> heh
<tritium> There have been very few updates since the RC came out.
<kaiyilen> what is RC?
<yarddog_> well, its already about 96% now
<tritium> What? Dapper download?
<yarddog_> upgrade
<tritium> Some are saying 12:00 UTC, I just noticed
<yarddog_> hrmm
<yarddog_> that was 5pm here
<yarddog_> or 6 rather
<tritium> hmm
<yarddog_> i think we are UTC -6 here
<yarddog_> or -7, i cant keep track :P
<yarddog_> kaiyilen, RC is the release candidate for edgy, it is the last release before the final official release.
<tritium> Sorry, kaiyilen. I didn't see your question there.
<yarddog_> ubuntu edgy eft (6.10) is the new version to be released on the 26th depending on what time zone you (we) are in.
<yarddog_> im still running edgy on this laptop, lot of updates today though.
<yarddog_> when i came home tonight that is.
<tritium> Not _that_ many
<yarddog_> heh
<yarddog_> seemed like it
<yarddog_> no more kernel stuff, that is nice
<yarddog_> but before, i had dapper on the desktop, updated to edgy, lot of stuff did not work after the update, so i made a boo boo and had to reinstall _again_
<kaiyilen> its okay
<tritium> :)
<yarddog_> i should mention that the laptop is running xubuntu
<tritium> ah
<yarddog_> runs good too
* yarddog_ crosses his fingers
<yarddog_> :)
<tritium> :)
<yarddog_> <specialbuddy> edgy is being released?
<yarddog_> <dabaR> 5 mins.
<yarddog_> lol
<tritium> saw that
<yarddog_> kinda funny watching the anticipation
<tritium> yeah
<yarddog_> well they're doing a better job than fedora does :P
<tritium> aye
<tritium> How goes it, yarddog_ ?
<yarddog_> tritium, grub keeps wanting to boot to the 386 kernel instead of installed generic, how can i make grub keep the generic kernel the default kernel? ive tried editing grub and putting the 386 second, but when grub updates, it goes back to the 386 as default.
<tritium> don't try to edit the automagic section of menu.lst
<tritium> Instead, change the default setting near the top
<yarddog_> ok
<yarddog_> default is 0
<tritium> right, which is the first in the automagic list
<yarddog_> ok, since i changed the listing to the generic first, if i run grub update, will it keep the generic first?
<tritium> how did you change the listing? Did you change it from 0 to 1 or whatever?
<yarddog_> i did a copy/paste of the 386, deleted it, then pasted it below the generic to make it number 2
<yarddog_> then rebooted
<tritium> You shouldn't touch the automagic section
<tritium> I'd only change the number of the default
<yarddog_> yeah, i did update-grub and it reversed it
<tritium> right
<tritium> that's why you don't edit the automagic section
<yarddog_> ok, i set default to 1, ill reboot and see
<tritium> okay
<yarddog_> i guess it should be set to 2
<yarddog_> it went to the recovery kernel
<tritium> right, just count down to the one you want
<yarddog_> good
<yarddog_> now i need to set up fglrx
<tritium> I don't use fglrx on my laptop. Just ati
<yarddog_> i do for the DR and dual head
<tritium> I use dual head with ati just fine :)
<yarddog_> fglrx is not working
<kaiyilen> :(
<tritium> if you want to try dual head on ati, "man radeon", and check the details
<yarddog_> it works now
<tritium> good
<yarddog_> need to disable composite in edgy
<yarddog_> seveas repos are nice too
<yarddog_> do you use automatix?
<tritium> Heck no.
<tritium> That can wreak havoc on your system.
<yarddog_> just ubuntu repos?
<tritium> You could try easyubuntu, but I just install things I need from the repos.
<yarddog_> java and adobe reader?
<tritium> yes
<yarddog_> what is the adobe, acroread?
<yarddog_> and java?
<tritium> sun-java5-jre, and acroread
<yarddog_> thanks
<tritium> apt-cache search <search term> is handy for finding packages
<yarddog_> yeah, i think some ppl tend to forget about multiverse, i did.
<tritium> could be
<yarddog_> that doesnt normally come with a default setup
<tritium> right
<tritium> you might also watn sun-java5-plugin
<tritium> s/watn/want
<yarddog_> ahh ok
<yarddog_> i got the flash 9 beta from seveas repos
<tritium> cool
<yarddog_> do you know what the command for real player is?
<yarddog_> to install it that tis
<yarddog_> i tried sudo apt-get install realplayer
<yarddog_> no installation candidate
<tritium> looking..
<tritium> hmm, I can't find it here on edgy, but I know it's on my dapper laptop at work
<yarddog_> maybe a week or so
<tritium> I wonder where I got it. I thought it was multiverse
<tritium> Oh yeah, they're in the commercial repo
<yarddog_> ahh
<tritium> deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu dapper-commercial main
<yarddog_> yeah, edgy-commercial is not found
<yarddog_> guess it would help if i could spell :P
<yarddog_> hrm, still no installation candidate
<tritium> I thought you were installing dapper
<yarddog_> edgy
<yarddog_> i installed dapper then upgraded
<tritium> Oh, I see.
<yarddog_> its all edgy now
<yarddog_> :P
<tritium> right on!
<yarddog_> im off to bed, but to note, realplayer is not in the update manager nor synaptic now either. ttyl, have a good night :)
<tritium> Hmm, okay.
<tritium> Maybe the edgy commercial repo isn't setup yet.
<tritium> Have a good night.
<ameoba> when I was managing a lab of Debian systems I decided that it was easy enough to just install that handful of binary-only, non-apt-get-able things by hand
<ameoba> a lot better than putting questionable repositories into the system
<ameoba> I'm not really an APT guru but, what if the realplayer repo gets compromised?
<ameoba> probably a lot more likely than the main repo getting pwnd

<tritium> Morning
<kaiyilen> wha..?
<ameoba> so... any real reason to upgrade to 6.10?
<ameoba> not really running a desktop, so the GNOME/Firefox upgrades aren't too exciting
