<OverLord> hi
<Lilandra> hi
<arch> morning, folks
<sensei> Morning
<PuMpErNiCkLe> morning
<arch> still interested in a solution for xfce not managing the desktop, even though i told it to, if anyone has knowledge about that sort of thing
<PuMpErNiCkLe> I'd check for possible conflicts - see if anything else is trying to manage it.
<arch> that's my theory
<arch> but i'm not sure how to check that
<arch> the result seems to be nothing properly managing it
<arch> since no bg wallpaper displays
<arch> no clicking on the desktop produces a result

<arch> :D

<PuMpErNiCkLe> There are those who call me...... Tim?
<HeathenDan> if arch's upgraded xubuntu from ubuntu, she should try preventing gnome from drawing the desktop
<Neo8750> last time i installed gnome it made my laptop useless
<Neo8750> it caused it to lock up 1/2 way through boot
<Neo8750> but had same problem with the xubuntu 6.06.1 disk
<Neo8750> so figured it was acpi or something
<Jamminpotato> does thunar have a file searcer?
<Jamminpotato> *searcher
<Laibsch> What is so strange about my partition table: http://rafb.net/paste/results/l8WZMJ71.html
<Laibsch> The installer complains that it is strange and parted cannot handle it.
<HeathenDan> dammit, i tried to install gnome-sudoku but the damn thing has dependencies up the wazoo. why do i have to dl all those junk just to play my sudoku? =\
* HeathenDan ends up playing sudoku portable + wine :P
<sensei> Because it's gnome :/
<sensei> Integration galore!
<sensei> Application has to register with this, has to talk to that, has to show up there, has to have that style, has to know what other programs are doing
<sensei> Sudoku applications are advanced shit.. *cough*
<phate> Anyone know how to turn the current desktop style (which looks like gnome :P) to the normal XFCE style?
<esc> sudoku, is NP-complete, why solve something with my head, if i can write a program to do so
<PuMpErNiCkLe> Applications -> settings -> user interface settings -> theme
<sensei> esc: For the fun of it ? The waste of time? Challenge?
<sensei> Utterly stupid remark imho
<sensei> Unless you just wanted to point out to everyone that you could write a sudoku solver, in which case it made sense :)
<phate> what I really ment is from this: http://xubuntu.org/images/s_desktop_jmak2.png to this: http://www.xfce.org/images/screenshots/snap_I.jpg
<HeathenDan> i don't need a solver, i just want to play the game... btw, ksudoku didn't need no stinking dependencies (maybe cause I already installed all i need with k3b)
<HeathenDan> ksudoku is good, but sudoku portable is simpler and better... sadly i need to wine it :P
<HeathenDan> you just need to tinker with your panels to get that
<Linuturk_code> i wish there was an option to set the panels back to the original breezy config though HeathenDan
<HeathenDan> egad!
<PuMpErNiCkLe> phate: I can't find any simple way to switch. You can do it by editing ~/.config/xfce/panel/panels.xml (or finding a replacement panels.xml) if you know what you're doing, though.
<HeathenDan> dammit, i hate it when i forget to lower the volume when burning with k3b ~_~
<HeathenDan> esp since it's almost midnight and my wife's sleeping
<Brouken> how do i enable vertical sync in the newest ati drivers. the capabilities option is not working =/
<esc> sensei, its just what i thought after i had solved my first (and last) sudoku
<esc> :-) but yeah i could write one, but its been written :-)
<esc> i just enjoyed thinking about the possible strategies that a program could employ to solve sudokus (backtracking elimination etc...)
<Brouken> got it working, thanks anyway...
<Brouken> :D
<sensei> esc: Ther's a challenge to write one that solves them as fast as possible, yeah

<sensei> Define official? :)
<Jamminpotato> well on one of the ubuntu webpages it was listed with gnoppix and mepis and otehrs not with ubuntu kubuntu and edubuntu
<jikuty> phew - I'm back.. this time, with xubuntu correctly installed.
<jikuty> only problem is, my xubuntu is not catching that I have an ethernet card installed .. :/
<HeathenDan> xubuntu is as official as it goes.
<HeathenDan> maybe that webpage is outdated (i still find wiki info that's still breezy-current)
<jikuty> HeathenDan: i like the performance of xubuntu on this old pc, it's better than M$ Win98
<jikuty> and the interface is just so much cleaner.
<HeathenDan> i suppose this calls for a celebration. now go buy me a beer
* jikuty runs off.
<jikuty> bah - I have to find which ethernet card is installed in here, so I can get the correct drivers.
<jikuty> it's labelled SMC Ether-EZ, but as usual, there are too many models called that :/
<HeathenDan> can't you just use the default ethernet driver from your kernel?
<jikuty> it didnt let me.. when I installed, it said that it couldnt find an ethernet card installed at all
<HeathenDan> maybe... you don't have one! call the cops, you wuz robbed
<jikuty> :D
<jikuty> I logged into my gmail before I formatted in Win98 on it!
<HeathenDan> well, it's god telling you to go back to worshipping Lord Gates (may his name be praised)
<jikuty> heh
<jikuty> come to think of it , I do have a copy of windows vista beta sitting around here

<Jamminpotato> i wish xubuntu wasn't pitched as being primarily for weak systems
<Jamminpotato> what about people who just like xfce
<Neo8750> well it does work great on weak systems
<Jamminpotato> i know
<Neo8750> i mean i'm on a p3 700mhz(runing at 550mhz) with only 128megs ram
<Jamminpotato> but it seems like its always pitched as ubuntu for older systems

<Jamminpotato> ah
<Jamminpotato> it doesn't?

<Neo8750> not yet
<Neo8750> its supose to next release
<Jamminpotato> what is xffm like?
<Neo8750> i tried it i didn't like it
<esc> yeah, i thought that kinda sucked
<esc> aptitude keeps trying to deinstall my xffm
<esc> with the smb support
<Neo8750> it was buggy i couldn't get it to copy directories from window shares
<esc> really?
<esc> well
<Neo8750> well it would start then just stop randomly
<esc> hmpf
<esc> over here, all the people in my flat run windows, and our file-server runs linux
<esc> so mostly people are using windows to connect to smba shares
<esc> not the other way around
<Neo8750> yeah
<esc> though the problem you are describing is kinda odd
<esc> i guess xffm must depend on the samba stuff to access windows shares
<esc> like smbmount and so on
<esc> so it find it weird its crashing given samba stuff is pretty stable
<esc> maybe its just buggy interaction between xffm and samba
<esc> though i must say i haven't even used thunar yet
<Jamminpotato> what should i use if i need to samba and i'm using thunar?
<esc> smbmount
<Jamminpotato> k
<esc> you can mount smb shares just like harddisks and so on
<esc> you can also smbclient
<esc> if you prefer using an ftp like interface to log-in and log-out
<esc> just look at the man :-)

<Jamminpotato> on the list of reolutions
<Neo8750> hmm sounds like what *ubuntu live cd does to my other computer
<jikuty> hm, how can I tell which model# ethernet card I have in my pc?
<jikuty> it's an SMC Ether-EZ, but I can't tell which model it is, so I can download the appropriate drivers.
<PuMpErNiCkLe> jikuty: lspci |grep -i eth
<PuMpErNiCkLe> Chances are either a) you already have the appropriate driver but it's not being loaded or b) it's being loaded but not configured properly.
<jikuty> i see
<jikuty> when I installed xubuntu, it said it couldnt detect an ethernet card at all
<jikuty> so, im not sure.. let me try that 'lspci |grep -i eth'
<jikuty> doesnt come up with anything :/
<jikuty> just gives me a new line in the terminal
<Neo8750> hmm
<Neo8750> try just: lspci
<jikuty> yep, tried that too..
<jikuty> it detects the 56k modem in there, but not the network card
<Neo8750> maybe you need to do ndiswrapper
<Neo8750> but then i'm not sure if you need it be visable in ls[pci to use it
<Neo8750> jikuty: is it a isa card ??
<jikuty> hm, Yeah, I believe it is
<Neo8750> thats why lspci can't see it
<birdfish> I just installed xubuntu, but when I insert a music cd into the drive, nothing happens.
<josesito> someone knows bash scripting?
<birdfish> I browse to the /media/cdrom/ and it doesn't show that any files are on the cd
<Neo8750> you need to figure out what model your ethernet card is and figure out the module and load it for it to work
<birdfish> However, I just played them yesterday
<Neo8750> birdfish: it shouldn't show anything
<josesito> birdfish, did you mount the cd-rom?
<birdfish> No. I didn't realize that I needed to. I didn't have to in Ubuntu. I figured it was the same thing with xubuntu
<birdfish> Do I just open the terminal and execute "mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom" ?
<josesito> yes try that
<birdfish> Okay
<Neo8750> isn't it /media/cdrom ?
<birdfish> I should be able to mount it anywhere I think
<birdfish> It tells me that I need to specify a filetype
<birdfish> *filesystem type
<Neo8750> yeah but i think the fstab has it set to that
<Neo8750> also you not supose to mount audio cds
<birdfish> if fstab set them to mount to /media/cdrom, then both are mounted already
<Neo8750> you just need to load a player and it should work
<birdfish> I opened the xfce media player
<birdfish> Xfmedia
<Neo8750> or xmms if you have it
<birdfish> perhaps it only does playlists though
<birdfish> Meh, does xubuntu even recognize most media cards?
<Neo8750> use sound juicer
<birdfish> I installed banshee
<birdfish> Opened the audio cd
<birdfish> Started playing it
<birdfish> But no sound
<birdfish> Nevermind. The system loaded with the sound muted for some reason
* birdfish doesn't think he liked xfce
<Linuturk_code> i liked it before they made it look like gnome
<Neo8750> liked what?
<Linuturk_code> the look of xfce on ubuntu
<Linuturk_code> and yes, I know you can chage it back
<Linuturk_code> change*
<Linuturk_code> but it takes a lot of work
<Neo8750> it was done to make it a lowend ubuntu basicly
<Linuturk_code> the xfce look in breezy was lowend as well
<Linuturk_code> and, better fitting to the xfce gui
<Linuturk_code> you lack a lot of gnome specific apps that make a gnome layout more efficient
<Linuturk_code> where, the layout of xfce makes the xfce applets more suiting to xfce, instead of a gnome-like layout
<jikuty> after loading pppoeconf .. it fails when attempting to load 'modconf' to manually load ethernet drivers
<tooster> by
<jikuty> and, using synaptic.. modconf isn't available :/
<Neo8750> i personally don't mind the xubuntu mock of gnome but not used xfce till this distro i was a fluxbox child
<Neo8750> thing that gets me is that most apps i install don't show in the menu so i had to put them in panel
<Linuturk_code> Neo8750, i'm not sure if it will work, but load up a breezy iso and get the xfce gui from the repos. I don't know if they kept the default layout for breezy, but it better imo
<Linuturk_code> are you talking about fluxbox or xfce when you talk about the menu?
<Neo8750> xfce
<Neo8750> fluxbox was easy config file
<Linuturk_code> you could always install the debian menu (I personally don't like it)
<Neo8750> may give that whirl
<Neo8750> looking at xfce website it kinda reminds me of macos
<tooster> re
<tooster> where are the multimediasettings
<Neo8750> ???
<tooster> hm the audiorecorder says that i have to change my multimedia settings
<tooster> but i dont have a clue where they are
<jikuty> wooohooo :D
<jikuty> I got my network card working
<jikuty> well .. kind of.. I found another dusty network card lying around that was on a PCI interface, so I used that, and had no problems
<Neo8750> [audiorecorder or sound recorder?
<jikuty> the network card that was pre-installed was from 1995
<Neo8750> hehe
<tooster> its name is Audia-Recorder
<tooster> its an item under multimedia
<Neo8750> never used it
<Neo8750> i have sound recorder
