<Amwyll> Hi.
<Amwyll> Is anyone around?
<GazzaK> hi Amwyll
<Amwyll> I need some help with installing a 2nd NIC into a working box...
<Amwyll> could someone help me out with that one?
<GazzaK> eek, erm, #ubuntu would be best for support (as I am rubbish)
<GazzaK> and no one else seems to say much here
* dsas coughs
<Amwyll> Yeah, well, they didn't have very much to say in #ubuntu either... :\
<dsas> Amwyll: What problems are you having?
<Amwyll> dsas: I need to install a 2nd NIC into a working server and I CAN'T break the thing or take it offline for long
<dsas> Amwyll: You're probably better of waiting until after whoevers using it, isn't. if you can.
<dsas> Amwyll: Do you mean you need help doing a physical installation?
<Amwyll> so I want to know whether I need to do anything special before taking it off-line, slapping the NIC in, and rebooting... So yes, I'm talking physical alright...
<dsas> Amwyll: Not as far as I know.
<GazzaK> physically then it is just a case of 1. making sure the hardware is correct, ie pci etc, and 2. removing blanking plate, insert nic, and doing the screw up.
<Amwyll> dsas: what about drivers?
<GazzaK> make sure to ground yourself on the metal case of the server first
<Amwyll> dsas: 2nd nic is diff. make from 1st one
<dsas> Amwyll: The relevant drivers should be picked up when you boot.
<Amwyll> dsas: really? it'll auto-detect too?
<dsas> Amwyll: That should still be fine, if the drivers for the second model exist at all.
<dsas> Amwyll: it *should* do. there's not usually any problems with ethernet NICs
<dsas> of course if it all goes tits up, it's nothing to do with me :)
<Amwyll> dsas: I suppose they exist : we're talking garbage Realtek here... :p
<Amwyll> dsas: I know, I know :)
<Amwyll> dsas: And what if I want to hook up BOTH NICs to the same network? Any problems with that? (NOT talking about bonding)
<dsas> I think I remember having a realtek NIC before and it working...probably on a 2.4 kernel though.
<dsas> Amwyll: I wouldn't anticipate any problems. I've never tried it myself though :)
<dsas> well, actually I have my wireless card and wired card on the same network on the same machine, and it's fine.
<dsas> or at least, traffic is going out over at least one of the interfaces :)
<Amwyll> dsas: Ok, so far sounds easy enough.
<Amwyll> And if I pull out the original NIC later on, will the box know to use the new one as the default?
<dsas> I'd assume so.
<Amwyll> Hmm... Ok. Thanks for your time, dsas.
<dsas> no problem
* dsas lets the dust settle over the channel once more
<GazzaK> lol
<chrisbudden14> anyone get a level results today
<kahrn> hi
